Microsoft Windows Me has a lot to offer someone who wants to use Windows in a home or small-office setting. Author Andy Rathbone competently explains its advantages (as well as some of its shortcomings) in Microsoft Windows Me for Dummies, a fine example of software documentation that appeals to novices without shirking its responsibility to include lots of details. To his credit, Rathbone knows that what's interesting to the Microsoft marketing department isn't necessarily important to most users of Windows Me. That's why he's gone to some trouble to include instructions for such unglamorous but important tasks as duplicating floppy disks and copying text from place to place in a document.

About half of this book deals with absolutely fundamental Windows subjects, such as running programs by choosing them from the Start menu, and moving files around. Rathbone deals with this material ably, although with far fewer illustrations than some readers might want. More exotic material--such as using two video monitors at once, and the essentials of e-mail and the Web--also gets attention. However, Rathbone totally neglects what might be the most exciting new feature of Windows Me--the Home Networking Wizard. Instead, he (or, probably more to the point, his publisher) chose to relegate the Home Networking Wizard to More Windows Me for Dummies, which is a cheap ploy to sell more books. If you're new to Windows and getting started with Windows Me, however, this book has what you need. --David Wall

In terms of the total content, this book is designed for the beginner. All of the basic operations of using XP, even down to how to resize windows, are demonstrated using a combination of screenshots, pointers and text. The selective content, such as the features of service pack 2, will appeal to the more experienced user. Each feature new to SP2 is flagged with an icon in the text, so it is easy to pick out additions to the system. My opinion is that if you cannot figure out how to do something by following the steps illustrated in this book, then you may be untrainable.
Not all of the steps in a sequence are shown each time. For example, clicking the start button, the first step in many of the sequences, is not demonstrated after the initial section. The author assumes that once you have done it a few times, it does not have to be explicitly demonstrated. After that, there is an ordered list of steps on one side of the page and a screenshot with numbered arrows pointing to the item to be examined, clicked or filled. The simplicity of it all cannot be understated, I occasionally use it as a reminder. When I can't remember the sequence of steps to complete a task, I reach for this book and turn to the appropriate page. In most cases, within seconds, my memory has been jogged and I know what to do.

How To Use Microsoft Windows Me Millennium Edition 3 out of 5 stars.

This is an interesting book on Microsoft Windows Me that certainly covered the basics of using this software program. This would be an excellent guide for a first time computer user or for someone who was not real computer savvy.
This guide has step-by-step full color pictures that will help you to understand what the book is explaining. I felt the photos were a real plus to the book.
For someone who is more computer savvy this book does mention a few features of Windows Me that you may be unaware of. However, be advised, depending on the other software programs that you have some techniques like file compression do not work the way the book says they do. I could not figure out how to accomplish this task the way the book instructs, which could be because I have WinZip.
There is also a section on ?how-to tips? that offer some pretty interesting advice, everything from e-mail tips to how to change the order of the print queue. Some of these tips definitely were new to me and very useful.
This is a reference book that I would suggest you have on your shelf if you are running Windows Me, especially if you are new to computers.

SPSS Student is a dremendous value: over 75% off the retail version and nearly as powerful. It is limited, but is more than adequate for most cases you will encounter in class.
If you need a more advanced package, get SPSS Career Builder or SPSS Graduate Pack -- they include the full version of SPSS.

Note: SPSS 13.0 for Windows Student Version cannot open data files containing more than 50 variables or 1,500 cases. Having said that, if you have less than 50 variables and 1,500 cases to deal with then this is the software for you. It came with a (brief) 227-page users guide that was pretty comprehensive all by itself. Order the SPSS 13.0 Guide to Data Analysis to go with it, and you have just about everything you need to fiddle with and learn the basics of statistical analysis.

Beware - if you buy the student version it is not big enough to run the files necessary that you work on in class. Nowhere did it indicate on the Amazon site that it had limits of file size. Wouldn't one assume that if you are selling a "student" verson, that it will be able to run your school files? Don't buy it if you are a college student and need this software to complete your projects. I wasted $80 plus dollars. Didn't learn of its limitations until AFTER I loaded it, and when it wouldn't work found the limitation statement in the manual. Very disappointed.

Good tricks book for the beginner 4 out of 5 stars.

I have been a mediocre fan of the "Dummies" series. They do a decent job at teaching the basics on a subject.

Where these books tend to shine is teaching a subject in an enjoyable format to the beginner. There are a host of beginner guides out there, but few are written and put together in such a way that even the casual PC user can understand them. Also the format is consistent from book-to-book. So if you have read one "Dummies" book you will feel comfortable with another.

The Windows Me OS is a perfect topic for this type of book. Typically, the casual user wants a quick concise answer to a question without needing to read a complete history on why Microsoft decided to implement the change that is causing him/her trouble. Most beginners don't care why, they just want it fixed.

If you like the "Dummies" format and are looking for a book that will make you feel more comfortable using Me, try this one out.

This CD-ROM was of great use for planning two round-trips from Florida to Alaska (2002 and 2006)and for changing plans/routes as we went. It is PC-based. We had it loaded on a slow laptop ... and checked nightly to see how we were doing and where we were going next. It was quite helpful in determining costs ... there are features that allow speed of travel, cost of fuel and food, lodging, etc.

A lthough from 2001, it is still quite useful.

Okay my Dad and his wife are almost completely clueless when it comes to using computers. My Dad runs out and buys a new computer with Windows ME. (note: he was running Windows 3.1 on his previous computer) So I bought this for him to help out. He LOVES this book. So does his wife. Very helpful!

This book is extremely helpful in understanding all the aspects of windows millenium. I recently went to a computer store this weekend and looked at all the possibilities of the windows millenium versions and this book, by far, is the most cleanest, clearest, and easiest to understand of all the books I looked at. Don't dissapoint yourself, buy it.

Answer: False. Sort of. Windows Me is not an authoritative reference, nor does it claim to be one. If you're looking for an extensive laundry list of features that cover every last crevice of Windows Me, you won't find it here.

But let's be honest, if you really wanted to know about every feature in Windows Me, you could just go through the online help system--right? A better question to ask might be the following:

By using Microsoft Windows Me Secrets, you can change just about every aspect of Windows Me that can be changed--and some that can't. Which leads us to the next question:
