The Travels Of Norton 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Norton, is a credit to Scotish Folds. And Mr. Gethers know excatly how fortunate he is in having the most Purr-fect of friends. This a joyful read of a cat who just can't help be lovable, and who loves the people he meets. Apparently some cats do on some level know exactly what's going on.

AN OLD TIME FAVOURITE! 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Norton is just the sweetest little Scottish Fold kitten one could ever hope to meet. His folded ears, gentle disposition and loyalty to his owner, Peter Gethers, will astound you. Norton has a puss-in-ality extraordinaire. He trots obediently five steps behind his owner to the market, on the beach, and to visit friends. In a car, he sits perched atop Gethers shoulder and watches life go by. On a ferry ride, he puts his paws on the rail and follows the waves. Even Norton's father who is a confirmed "dog-lover, cat-hater" mellows up to the adorable little fellow and they become best friends. Norton even has the ability to help Gethers choose his girlfriends; some Norton likes, others he does not - and emphatically lets Gethers know which ones do not win his approval. Norton is a jet-setter. He accompanies Gethers on trans-continental flights to Paris and many other countries around the world. He dines in luxury at five-star dining establishments, sits in his own chair as if he had just graduated from the most exquisite Swiss finishing school, and enjoys his own fare specially prepared by the chef. However, according to Norton's palate, nothing tops a good can of Pounce!

No one could write a book about a cat in quite the same style and wit as Gethers. Norton is not a work of fiction; he is Gethers feline companion, soul mate and best friend. You will relish Norton's antics and adventures from start to finish. This book is an oldie but one of my all time favourites. If there were a hundred starts in the rating scale, this would shine at one hundred.

The simple instructions make each game easy to set up and play in as little as 10 to 15 minutes. The book features activities that challenge your cat both mentally and physically, helping to satisfy her instinctive hunting skills while keeping her fit and happy. Many of the exercises utilize items often found lying around the house, such as empty boxes or shopping bags and even soap bubbles. It also includes expert tips that explain your cat's playful behavior and shows you how to coax a cautious cat into play or calm an overexcited cat.

For the cat owner who wants to help his or her pet stay active and engaged, 50 Games to Play with Your Cat offers enjoyable game ideas that are appropriate for all ages and activity levels of both cat and owner.

good overall idea, BUT... 3 out of 5 stars.
23 of 29 people found this review helpful.

First I will give the author due credit for her general ideas on natural rearing, caution of over-vaccination, recommendation of a natural raw diet and advice to provide plenty of exercise, sunshine and love.

With that said, some of her suggestions are iffy at best:

The suggestion to not spay and neuter is very ignorant. Overpopulation in dogs and cats leads to euthanasia, homeless pets, pets with bad homes because they were given away to anybody, etc, etc. There is no side effect of spaying and neutering that even comes close to being as harmful to our pets as the side effects of overpopulation.

The author recommends burying meat in the backyard as a healthful alternative to freezing.

She recommends feeding grains with the raw bones, so that the grains can protect the stomach/intestines from any sharp bone fragments. To expect that to work is just silly, and dogs do not need grains in their diets.

She recommends feeding dried fruits, specifically including raisins, but raisins are toxic to dogs!

She recommends red raspberry leaf for pregnant females but this has been scientifically proven to cause a higher fetal mortality rate, and it induces uterine contractions which is not always a good thing.

She does have some good advice, but I wouldn't blindly trust all of the information contained in this book. Natural rearing is best for your dog, but definitely do your own research and make your own informed decisions.

Editorial Review:

Dog and cat owners are becoming increasingly concerned about the saftey of processed pet food and the possible side-effects of over-use of antibiotics and hormone treatments. This new edition, thoroughly revised and updated, covers Natural Rearing, herbal medicine and disease prevention.

A very informative book 4 out of 5 stars.
9 of 15 people found this review helpful.

Small Animal Clinical Oncology is NOT aimed at "civilian" pet owners like me. I bought this book after getting a cancer diagnosis on my dog, desperate for more detailed information than what I've found so far in books for the general public. I hesitated at the price, but I'm now very glad I bought it. I strongly suggest having Taber's Medical Dictionary handy if you're not in the field, and many of the photos were very tough to look at. Each chapter is written by different authors, it's footnoted to the nth degree which makes it easier if you should want to find further info. The chapters are well laid out and offered lots of basic and not so basic info on different tumors and cancers, progression, treatments, theory, classifications, pathology, etc. The last chapter on Bond Centered Practice is very touching from where I stand, addressing the handling of us owners in a very comforting way.

This book has most anything pet owners could want to know from a conventional medicine standpoint if they're willing to wade through it. There's info about the not-so-conventional side too, I found that a bonus since I'm interested in both sides. I did get totally lost in a couple of the theory chapters, that's to be expected for the likes of me, but I managed most of it. While a tough read for for a those not in the field, I've really learned a lot from this book, it's the best I've found on the subject so far. I can't rate this 5 full stars since I am not in the target group it's written for. If there are any problems, inaccuracies, or unnoted controversies, I'd probably never know, but none are obvious to me anyway.

Editorial Review:

Focusing on cancer in small animals, this updated 3rd Edition comprehensively covers the latest material in clinical oncology, including chemotherapy, surgical oncology, and cytologic techniques in cancer. Its user-friendly style makes it an excellent reference for both veterinary practitioners and those involved in academic research. Timely new information that is relevant in day-to-day practice is emphasized. Numerous new contributing authors ensure the text is up to date and that it contains today's most important information on cancer in the small animal.

Who said "There's More Than One Way to Skin a Cat"? 5 out of 5 stars.

An excellent companion guide for laboratory exercises. The sketches and drawings were able to add much more detail than many other manuals which had photos. I found it invaluable.

Pictorial Anatomy of the Cat (Gilbert) 5 out of 5 stars.

I am a graduate teaching assistant at Old Dominion University and we use this book extensively as a reference for muscles and blood vessels. The drawings are very accurate and the text is easy to read and flows well from a dissector's viewpoint. In addition, there are simplified "road-map" type sketches to aid in understanding the branching patterns of the major blood vessels. This "catlas" has proven to be quite indispensable for our purposes.

Perfect copy for the price 5 out of 5 stars.

I got my items in about three days and it was just what I was expecting

Editorial Review:

This book is designed for use as a dissection guide in comparative vertebrate anatomy or in mammalian anatomy. The material covered and the time allotted to such courses varies considerably, and the illustrations are therefore designed to enable the instructor to point out the important features of areas which cannot be dissected in detail by every student.

Book filled with inaccuracies 1 out of 5 stars.
6 of 7 people found this review helpful.

My daughter and I read "How to Talk to Your Cat" and were amazed by the number of inaccuracies stated throughout the book.

The author states that cats are "completely self-sufficient and can leave you at any time and go off and make a living." It's this kind of ignorance that contributed to the explosion in the feral cat population we face today! People pick up and move and abandon their cats thinking they can fend for themselves. Hunting is learned by watching other cats, and then putting those lessons into practice until they are perfected. Offspring of non-hunting cats rarely make good hunters themselves. In other words, house cats that have never been outdoors could never just "leave at any time and go off and make a living." They'd starve to death!

She also states that "cats are loners" and they "don't like company, including other cats." Cats are not anti-social. They have intricate social interactions with their own kind. Two of my cats are very social; they love the attention of people (even those they just meet) and the camaraderie of other felines. Feral cat colonies are found in every city and town throughout the world--the perfect example of their social nature. Cats also possess the ability to form close friendships with people. I own 8 cats and I have a unique relationship with each one. They are my babies and I couldn't imagine life without them.

She recommends only having one cat. She goes on to state "cats dislike other cats and will fight." Cats are social beings; they do like other cats and the only time they fight is to establish territory or male dominance, not because they dislike one another.

The author tells us that cats are o.k. with our leaving; they will not sulk. She doesn't know my cat Amber. Once I pull out the suitcases, she knows what's about to follow. She follows my every move when I go from room to room to gather things to pack all the while whimpering. I once had to cut a vacation short when her caretaker told me she wasn't eating or using the litter box. She was so upset by my absence.

Finally, she states that "the deeper the claws dig [into furniture], the more status the cat has." Huh? Scratching is a way of marking territory. Depth of the scratch has nothing to do with status. Feline social standing is measured by the amount of land a cat can lord over it. At the top of the hierarchy are unneutered males, followed by females that haven't been spayed, spayed females and at the bottom are the neutered males.

Her book would have been better suited for the fiction, not non-fiction classification.

I find it ironic that the author doesn't even own a cat, yet somehow she feels she has the knowledge and expertise to write a book about them.

Editorial Review:

Find out what your cat is really saying -- and talk back!

Jean Craighead George, Newbery Medal-winning author of over 80 books about nature and animals, demonstrates in words and photos how to communicate with that ever-mysterious, ever-lovable animal -- the cat.

Disappointing 1 out of 5 stars.
5 of 7 people found this review helpful.

I have several dogs, have been feeding them a raw meat diet for 2 years and have read many books on the subject. I wanted to make sure that I am including the correct nutrients so bought this book for the recipes. What a shame! All of the recipes in this book were variations of the same recipe: Cooked meat, bonemeal tablet and 1 multivitamin. Don't waste your time or money on this book. This is the first time I've ever sent a book back for a refund.

Editorial Review:

With an eye to the long-term health of pets, Dr Donald Strombeck outlines diets that the care giver can prepare at home or in the clinic. He offers nutritional and dietary guidance for animals with particular problems, from obesity, allergies, and gastrointestinal complaints to diseases of the kidney, pancreas, heart and joints. Each recipe includes nutrient content for proteins, fats and calories and all rely on unprocessed foods that are widely available and marketed for human consumption. Full of useful information about nutritional and dietary needs of cats and dogs, this book will be an indispensable guide for all those who are particular about what they feed their pets or their feline and canine patients.

Cats in May 3 out of 5 stars.
1 of 2 people found this review helpful.

The book left me feeling that I know no more about Doreen, Charles and their cats than before I started reading the book. I just never managed to connect with Tovey's writing style and the chapters had the feeling of being stories that were only funny if one had been there.

Editorial Review:

The Toveys attempt to settle down to quiet life in the country. Unfortunately, their tyrannical Siamese cats have other ideas. From causing an uproar on the BBC to claiming to have been kidnapped, Sheba and Solomon's outrageous behavior leaves the Toveys at their wits' end. Meanwhile, Doreen has to contend with her husband's disastrous skills as a handyman, a squirrel that chews the buttons off all his suits, and a runaway tortoise named Tarzan. Both human and animal characters come to life on the page in these witty stories, including Sidney, the problem-prone gardener, and Blondin, the brandy-swilling squirrel.

In a new edition, with 20 delightful black and white illustrations, Tovey’s tales are ready for rediscovery by a new generation of cat lovers. A truly enjoyable read for anyone who's ever been owned by a cat, it will tickle your funny bone and tug on your heartstrings.
