Editorial Review:

“Dogs are blameless, devoid of calculation, neither blessed nor cursed with human motives. They can’t really be held responsible for what they do. But we can.”
–from The Dogs of Bedlam Farm

When Jon Katz adopted a border collie named Orson, his whole world changed. Gone were the two yellow Labs he wrote about in A Dog Year, as was the mountaintop cabin they loved. Katz moved into an old farmhouse on forty-two acres of pasture and woods with a menagerie: a ram named Nesbitt, fifteen ewes, a lonely donkey named Carol, a baby donkey named Fanny, and three border collies.

Training Orson was a demanding project. But a perceptive dog trainer and friend told Katz: “If you want to have a better dog, you will just have to be a better goddamned human.” It was a lesson Katz took to heart. He now sees his dogs as a reflection of his willingness to improve, as well as a critical reminder of his shortcomings. Katz shows us that dogs are often what we make them: They may have their own traits and personalities, but in the end, they are mirrors of our own lives–living, breathing testaments to our strengths and frustrations, our families and our pasts.

The Dogs of Bedlam Farm recounts a harrowing winter Katz spent on a remote, windswept hillside in upstate New York with a few life-saving friends, ugly ghosts from the past, and more livestock than any novice should attempt to manage. Heartwarming, and full of drama, insight, and hard-won wisdom, it is the story of his several dogs forced Katz to confront his sense of humanity, and how he learned the places a dog could lead him and the ways a doge could change him.

wish there was more details. 3 out of 5 stars.

I found the book to have many common sense points. but not enough direction for unique group situations. I wanted more information, not just a booklet. The overall impression was that it was a good review of common sense points, which many people don't have with their pets. If you have not information about dogs, dog packs or dog behavior this will work for you. if you do have that basic information you may be disapointed with this book.

Editorial Review:

Looking for some tips to create a little order out of the canine chaos in your home? Concerned that there might be some tension between two of the dogs in your pack? Not sure if all that growling during play means trouble or not? This booklet has the answers to those questions and many more. Written to help you maximize the joy of living in a multi-dog household, it emphasizes the use of Ethology and Positive Reinforcement to teach your dogs to be polite and patient instead of demanding and pushy. Filled with practical ideas about keeping life fun in houses that have two dogs or many more than that, Feeling Outnumbered is a great resource for all multiple dog owners, whether novice of professional.

This is a great read-aloud 5 out of 5 stars.

My husband has been reading this book aloud to our three children, ages 12, 10 and 7. They howl with laughter when he reads it (a sound that is music to the ears) and demand more. The book provides an excellent opportunity to learn about and discuss different ways of life and different times.

A charming book 5 out of 5 stars.

I have not read this book in many years but I remember it as being one of the funniest books I have ever read. My old copy is falling apart, I'll have to get a new copy soon.

Don't let me give it away, You must read it for yourself 5 out of 5 stars.

This is one of my favorite dog books of all time, right up there with White Fang by Jack London. Get ready for a fun ride as you follow the author through the actual experience of a dog that is 'one of a kind' but that we all know in the many ways that dogs reach out and touch our lives by just being themselves. An astonishing, tender, revealing and sensitive book that will have you involved, right there with the owner and his family as each day leads to another amazing event.

An Unforgettable book.

Editorial Review:

Farely Mowat's best loved book tells the splendidly entertaining story of his boyhood on the Canadian prairies.  Mutt's pedigree was uncertain, but his madness was indisputable.  He climbed tress and ladders, rode passenger in an open car wearing goggles and displaying hunting skills that bordered on sheer genius.  He was a marvelous dog, worthy of an unusual boy growing up a raw, untamed wilderness.

Editorial Review:

An inspired, timely follow-up to the New York Times bestseller From Baghdad, With Love.

Lieutenant Colonel Jay Kopelman won the hearts of readers with his moving story of adopting an abandoned puppy named Lava in a hellish corner of Iraq. For this Marine and his comrades, the puppy served as an important emotional touchstone in a grim and seemingly endless war.

Kopelman now writes about what it's like to be home. He credits his canine best friend with finding his wife—in the park, Lava began playing with her dog and the two owners met—and for keeping him sane as he readjusted. With the same intelligence and insight he showed in From Baghdad, With Love, Kopelman sets forth more than a dozen lessons, including: Life can change in an instant, but you'll be able to handle it; passion for something can help you tap into your most powerful reserve of energy; have a standard operating procedure for everything; never forget who you are or how you got here. Active and retired troops, soldiers' friends and families, and everyone who has ever loved a dog will embrace this book. 10 b/w photographs.

Editorial Review:

A charming and hilarious New York Times bestseller about the enduring wisdom of dogs, from the host of the enormously popular National Dog Show

It’s Okay to Miss the Bed on the First Jump is more than a mere celebration of man’s best friend. In this lighthearted exploration of how and why dogs serve as some of our most valuable and enlightened teachers, well-known and well-loved actor/show host John O’Hurley shares lessons learned from his life with canine companions, including:
•Every 15 Minutes Is a New Day
•Never Miss a Nap
•When One Person Stops Petting You, Move On
•A Cold Can of Meat Is Still a Feast
•You’re Only as Big as You Think You Are

“Dogs, after all, have pure hearts, trusting natures, a zest for living, noble characters, and an ability to take things in stride,” writes O’Hurley in the book’s introduction. “They can be counted on, and are pleasant companions. They know what's important, always. How many humans do you know about which you could say the same?”

At once poignantly moving and laugh-out-loud funny, It’s Okay to Miss the Bed on the First Jump is a must read for dog lovers everywhere.

I wish I had bought this book first!! My lab is 3 months old - and I wish I had this book when I brough her home! It is excellent - great information for a first-time puppy owner! My husband has even learned a few things - and he has had dogs all his life! I highly recommend this book!!

Editorial Review:

The typical Labrador Retriever is relatively easy to train. The author takes readers step-by-step through her method, which emphasizes positive reinforcement.

As part of the Training Your Dog Series you will be taught just that; how to train your dog, with special emphasis on your special breed. Virtually every aspect of training is covered, including housebreaking and paper training, basic obedience, teaching the animal to obey both verbal and hand signals, retrieving and walking on a leash.

Also covered are humane methods of breaking a dog's bad habits, such as begging, jumping on people, unnecessary barking, and biting. Each book is filled with instructive full-color photos.

Other breeds featured in this Series are the German Shepherd and the Rottweiler.

Editorial Review:

"Living With Blind Dogs," now in its second edition, is the only published resource book on this topic. It embodies helpful hints from hundreds of blind-dog owners, as well as years of ophthalmic nursing, veterinary, and dog training experiences. Both the veterinary community and dog owners alike continue to praise this text, in which Levin successfully answers the common question: "What do I do now?"

This revised edition contains all the topics covered in the first edition, such as: Dealing with feelings of loss and grief, how dogs react to blindness, conditions that cause blindness and how they progress, genetics, pack issues, training concepts, new skills, helpful hints to negotiate the house, yard, and community, toys, games, and suppliers/resources.

This revised edition also includes numerous new sections and chapters: Dogs both blind and deaf, dogs blind from birth, white canes and other devices, circling behaviors, changes in barking patterns, dealing with cats, giving eye drops, traveling and camping with a blind dog, adding another dog to the pack, dry eye syndrome, VKH, and new findings on PRA and SARD.

Editorial Review:

Dog Language tells us why dogs do what they do and how we can express ourselves so that our dogs can understand us better. It is a systematic book, ordered alphabetically with 293 entries and 94 beautiful drawings illustrating over 150 different dog expressions.

First published in Scandinavia in 1986 as Hundesprog’, this book became a great success and has since then helped many thousands of dog owners, instructors, behavior students, and veterinarians to understand dogs. Now available in English, the present edition of Dog Language is an updated, highly revised and enlarged version of the original Hundesprog’.

Following the traditions of the school of ethology founded by Konrad Lorenz, Dog Language is based on many hours of research, observation, and study. Dog Language is a no-nonsense book, written in a modern, uncomplicated style—a book for all readers with interest in dogs, wolves and other canids.

‘Dog Language is a book that will benefit anyone interested in what makes our dogs tick. It is a must for the professional dog handler or behaviorist, as well as any pet owner. Dog Language is well organized and written in a clear, easily understood manner. The beautiful illustrations help to explain what our canine companions are trying to communicate to us and each other. This is a rare opportunity to tap into the talent and expertise of a well known canine ethologist.’ Sandy Myers (President of Narnia Pet Behavior, member of the APDT and NADOI)

‘If we are to understand the domestic dog’s natural behavior, we must appreciate his social heritage and the adaptive significance of his many complex behavior patterns. Roger Abrantes’ book Dog Language provides this knowledge, and presents it in an easy to use and understand format. This encyclopedia of canine behavior is absolutely a must for all serious students of canine behavior and training!’ Linda P. Case (Lecturer in Companion Animal Science, University of Illinois, Dept. of Animal Science)

My Favorite Wall Calendar 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

This is the 3rd year in a row that I have ordered one of these calendars and they are the best! I don't own bulldogs but the pictures and humor in this calendar almost make me want one. My 2 year old daughter even laughs at the pictures!

Editorial Review:

Despite her bloodshot eyes, stout frame, and serious overbite, she's still "adora-bull." She's Zelda, the English bulldog known for her outrageous costumes and "biting" wisdom such as, "Don't cry over spilled milk--lap it up." Tough but tender, sweet but strong, Zelda reminds us to laugh at life--and ourselves.

* "This doggy diva is queen of the catwalk." --Oprah Winfrey

Each month of this full-color calendar features a hilarious image of Zelda donning one of her outlandish outfits accompanied by one of her trademark quips.
