Get the help you need fast in this little book. I really didn't want a course in dog psychology, I just wanted some practical tips and tricks to help the dog. This book will give you that information so you can help your dog TODAY!

More of a pamphlet than a book 1 out of 5 stars.

There was no information in this pamphlet that I could not have gotten for free online. I thought I was buying a book, not a pamphlet for $10. I wouldn't bother. You can get similar info at the pet store.

    Editorial Review:

So much aggression in dogs results from fear, but fear-based problems can become worse if treated incorrectly. This booklet provides a step-by step explanation of desensitizing and counter classical conditioning. It can help you solve minor behavioral problems and prevent serious ones, whether your dog fears include the vacuum cleaner, people with hats, or the stranger at the door. The oh-so-important details related to identifying exactly what triggers your dog, creating a step-by-step treatment plan, monitoring your progress, and why you need to treat the fear and not just your dog's reaction to the fear are covered. This book is on the top ten of the Dogwise book catalog and has helped thousands of dogs and their owners around the country.

    Editorial Review:

Few dogs are as emotionally engaging or physically elegant as the greyhound. None are as swift. Its unmatched fleetness is key to the breed’s longtime survival. Bred to hunt, the greyhound has a lineage extending back 8,000 years. Throughout their history, greyhounds have been the companions of kings and an inspiration to writers and artists alike.

Today hundreds of young and healthy purebred greyhounds that do not make the grade on U.S. racetracks are in need of adoptive homes. Through the efforts of hundreds of greyhound-adoption groups, more than 20,000 former racing dogs are adopted into loving homes each year. With greater exposure of the breed, and greater awareness of their plight, all of these dogs can be placed after their tenure on the track and the breeding farms is over.

The otherworldly beauty, quiet grace, and loving disposition of the retired racing greyhound were Barbara Karant’s inspiration for Greyhounds. By photographing her subjects against a pristine white background, she captures the dogs’ indomitable spirit—their spunk, humor, mystery, and charm. Karant’s gloriously expressive pictures, along with evocative texts by Alice Sebold and other writers, make this book a wonderful gift for anyone who has ever shared his or her life with a dog.

A great way to train your new puppy! 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

I used Paul's book to train my puppy and it has been one of the most rewarding things I've ever done! His methods are completely reward based and compassion driven so there's no using pinch or choke collars, something I am very opposed to. I have have had great success overcoming all the normal puppy issues such as potty training, nipping, separation anxiety, and digging by using Paul's methods.

All in all I can't say enough good things about this book!

    Editorial Review:

"I've known Paul personally for many years and have faithfully followed his training advice with wonderful results. I can't recommend him highly enough." -Jeff Probst, host of Survivor

Following the success of his book The Dog Whisperer, Paul Owens turns his attention to puppies. In The Puppy Whisperer, Owens and his protoge Terence Cranendonk offer a compassionate step-by-step guide to all things puppy, including how to:

    • Evaluate temperament
    • Choose the right pup personality for your family
    • Monitor diet, play, and exercise
    • Train and problem solve
    • Provide early socialization and positive training
    • Potty train, step-by-step
    • Ensure safety and health care, including the latest on vaccinations
Puppies can be a lot of work, but they can also be a furry bundle of joy. If youíre thinking of bringing a puppy into your home, The Puppy Whisperer is your must-have guide.

Very disappointing book. Boring, lots of padding. Poor and repetative story line. Not well written. Couldn't even read it to the end which I'm sad about as I love books and don't give up easily.

Tons of fun 5 out of 5 stars.

One of the most entertaining books I have ever read. After reading one of the other reviews where the criticism was the authors lack of writing skills, for-gedda-bout-it. This book wasn't meant for your English Lit class. It's about one crazy dude's journey. It's funny, it's gritty, it's real, and if you're a dog lover, it's both happy and sad. I give it 10 thumbs up (ok, so I'm "all thumbs").

Excellent, very well written book! 5 out of 5 stars.

I read this book a few years ago, and it practically had me rolling on the floor laughing at times. Finally got it for myself to own, and it's still every bit as good. Gary Paulsen has a wonderful way with words, and is an excellent storyteller. I wholeheartedly recommend this book to anyone.

    Editorial Review:

Paulsen and his team of dogs endured snowstorms, frostbite, dogfights, moose attacks, sleeplessness, and hallucinations in the relentless push to go on. Map and color photographs.

    Editorial Review:

How is Animals in Translation different from every other animal book ever published?Animals in Translation is like no other animal book because of Temple Grandin. As an animal scientist and a person with autism, her professional training and personal history have created a perspective like no other thinker in the field, and this is her exciting, groundbreaking view of the intersection of autism and animal.
Unlike other well-known writers in the field of animal behavior -- When Elephants Weep by psychoanalyst Jeffrey Moussaleff Masson, How Dogs Think by psychologist and dog trainer Stanley Coren, and The Hidden Life of Dogs by anthropologist Elizabeth Marsha Thomas -- Temple Grandin is an animal scientist who has devoted the last 30 years of her life to the study of animals. Animals in Translation is the culmination of that life's work -- a book whose sweep is huge, including just about anything that gallops, trots, slithers, walks, or flies.
Temple Grandin is like no other author on the subject of animals because of her training and because of her autism; understanding animals is in her blood and her bones.
    Animals in Translation ...
    * redefines consciousness and argues that language is not a requirement for consciousness
    * categorizes autism as a way station on the road from animals to humans
    * explores the "Interpreter" in the normal human brain that filters out detail, creating an unintentional blindness that animals and autistics do not suffer from
    * applies the autism theory of "hyper-specificity' to animals, meaning that there is no forest, only trees, trees, and more trees
    * argues that the single worst thing you cando to an animal is make it feel afraid
    * examines how humans and animals use their emotions, including to predict the future
    * compares animals to autistic savants, in fact declaring that animals may be autistic savants, with special forms of genius that normal people cannot see
    * explains that most animals have "super-human" skills: animals have animal genius
    * reveals the abilities handicapped people, and animals, have that normal people don't
