AMERICA THE BEAUTIFUL - AMEN 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 7 people found this review helpful.

This book was purchased for a friend who is in the early to mid stages of Alzheimers. He and his wife sit and look at the pictures and remember when they say the places photographed. It is an exercise for his brain and a delight for her to be able to share it with him.

Editorial Review:

We are living in a land that is everywhere rich with beauty and wonders. LIFE is fortunate that these stunning settings have attracted many of the country's--indeed, the world's--most talented scenic photographers. From the awe-inspiring work of Ansel Adams to the jaw-dropping photography of Galen Rowell to the serene pastorals of Joel Meyerowitz and Michael Melford, this is art of a high order. And their subjects are incomparable: The Grand Canyon, Big Sur. Yosemite, Yellowstone, sublime Nantucket island, the San Francisco skyline, the Amish country of Pennsylvania and Ohio--100 beautiful sites in all. In words and pictures, LIFE takes you there.

As a special bonus, America the Beautiful includes a print of one of Ansel Adams' finest scenics, suitable for framing. This is a rich and beautiful book about a beautiful land. Our land. America.

Anybody who loves old photography, especially of dogs, will love this book. 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

My new book came today from Amazon.com and I love it! Anybody who loves old photography, especially of dogs, will love this book. Caroline Johnson collects amateur snapshots of dogs, this book is a collection of photos from the turn of the century up to the 50's. It also has a smattering of quotes and writings from William Wegman, the worlds best known dog photographer. Phaidon published the book; as an art student I quickly realized what great books they choose to publish, this is no exception. Some might review the faux cloth binding treatment as lesser quality but it is a great price for a 500+ page picture book.

It is especially fun for me to see all the old bulldogs! I think every other page has one. Oh! And all the old boston bulls pictures... They must have been quiet popular during the early days. There is even one picture that has writing on it. It says, "Can you find Pat? He's a Dandy little Toy Boston Bull and a female! Patsy is her right name." Lake Erie Summer 1928. That old pat joke from Saturday Night Live must be much older or it's an inside joke. The image is of a man cradling a Bt marked bulldog.

This will be a treasured addition to my growing collection of books on dogs.

Enjoy! Naomi & Mugsy (Olde Boston Bulldogge)

Editorial Review:

This charming new title is a collection of over 450 vintage photographs of dogs in all kinds of settings: under the Christmas table and in the sea; posing for a family portrait and being squeezed tightly by an over-enthusiastic toddler; a Chihuahua in a tea cup and a Great Dane standing as tall as its young owner. DOGS is an essential book for dog and animal lovers, presenting amateur, anonymous photographs of dogs from the turn of the century to the early 1950s in ordinary and extraordinary settings. Johnson's collection of photographs, in its unpretentious attitude and days-gone-by aesthetic, presents a snapshot of family life and shows man's timeless relationship with his "best friend."

Beach Stones by Josie Iselin, Margaret Carruthers 3 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

This book has beautiful images and interesting text. A good book for people who love the beach. It would make a good coffee table book. I was disappointed in the lack of depth offered by the text. I was hoping for more in depth geologic information, and a greater variety of stones pictured. This is not the book for you if you want an in depth look at geologic process and the mineral composition of stones that wash up on the beach.

Editorial Review:

Walking along the water's edge, who among us has not stopped to admire the evocatively patterned, shaped, and multihued stones that beckon? Fun to collect and free for the taking, beach stones are objects of contemplation, beauty, and sentiment. This exquisite volume-at once a gorgeous art book and a nature guide-presents more than 200 exceptional stones from around the world and describes the fascinating natural processes that produced them.

Photographer and installation artist Josie Iselin, who uses a flatbed scanner to generate her imagery, has arranged these stones with great artistry, and nature writer Margaret Carruthers yields their secrets, revealing, for instance, that a pebble from Maine was created 400 million years ago during the birth of a great mountain range. Art lovers and beachcombing spirits everywhere will cherish this gift book.

Buy the book for the portraits....certainly NOT the articles. 4 out of 5 stars.
2 of 3 people found this review helpful.

The photographs reminicent of Richard Avedon are excellent -- infact all photos are often framed like those of Avedon -- with the negative holders shown (albeit, they are digitally overlaid). The book also includes a collection of essays and diptychs of men and women (who happen to be porn stars). Each subject consists of a clothed portrait, followed by a nude photo (full frontals to 1/2 upper body shots). The concept of a pair of portraits, one clothed and one nude is facinating regardless of whether or not they are porn stars.

The book also includes essays on the subject of porngraphy -- some written by [...], mainstream actors, porns star themselves etc on the subject of pornography. Most of the writings are uninteresting and I believe are included in the book to "legitimize" the portfolio so that this coffee table book can be taken as a collection of "serious" photography.

I wish the photographer, Timothy Greenfield-Sanders had (ahem) "the balls" to simply captioned his work with a brief title rather than boring pseudo-intellectual babble in order to substatiate his work.

More interesting than the essays are the short concise bios written by the pornstar themselves at the end of the book.

Editorial Review:

Now in paperback, a provocative look at today+s leading porn stars combined with insightful, offbeat, and amusing texts by an all-star literary lineup.XXX, by renowned photographer Timothy Greenfield-Sanders, features cleverly paired portraits (one clothed and one nude) of the top stars in pornographic film. A cross section of straight and gay men and women is represented, from porn legends to rising stars. Performers in the book include celebrities like Jenna Jameson (the leading porn star of our time), Ron Jeremy, and Nina Hartley, as well as fast-rising names like Sunrise Adams, Belladonna, and Chad Hunt. The book also features short essays on the intersection of pornography and culture by a wide range of distinguished writers, including Salman Rushdie, Francine du Plessix Gray, John Malkovich, Nancy Friday, and John Waters. XXX is a landmark artistic work that will contribute to the ongoing debate about the -pornification+ of the culture at large.

A definate inspiration and practical guide all in one 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 3 people found this review helpful.

This is one of the best "How To" photography books I have read. I found it practical in every aspect of how to approach the many aspects of maternity photography. This can be a touchy subject at times for a male photographer and Jennifer has inspired and helped to convince me to continue with this type of work. So this book helps on many levels with beautiful examples of her work throughout. She has many unique original compositional ideas and use of light with great fabrics and simple props. I highly recommend this book.

Editorial Review:

Capturing the beauty of pregnancy through photographs is an increasingly popular trend, and this timely guide covers the basics of maternity photography from both artistic and business standpoints. The details of creating a successful maternity portrait are addressed, including how to select a meaningful location, what props and fabrics to use, how to pose the subject, and how to produce a flattering lighting scheme. Helpful digital effects that can enhance skin tone and impart a wide variety of polished and artistic effects are discussed, as are tactics for incorporating other family members in the portrait. Also included are tips for building a strong connection with the subject that can lead to a profitable, lifelong client relationship.

Mailed old worthless edition & can't find an avenue of redress 1 out of 5 stars.
2 of 5 people found this review helpful.

God damn it. Amazon you have ways to drive a person insane. I'm trying to reach you to obtain a copy of the latest edition of "Using the View Camera" that you listed on the page that I ordered from. You sent me about a 1982 edition. The page I ordered from listed it as about 1993. I am demanding you exchange the the '82 for the '93 as listed. Stop ignoring me or give me some channel to which you will respond.
I've been shopping @ Amazon for 10 + yrs, & in general I've been quite happy. But boy when there is a problem you put up so many barriers as to be maddening. This is unacceptable. I have the distenct feeling that you deliberately raise these barriers to make it impossabile for wronged customers to receive justice. This is the 2nd time I have written about this, J. McGraw

Goodle 4 out of 5 stars.

One of a kind book 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Ms. Long's daughter is in my class and so I got the oppurtunity to look at the book at length. The photographs are smile-inducing and original. Who can resist photographs of children with their dogs? But before you think its all about cute overload, let me say that the most interesting aspect of the book is actually the well researched text. It goes into the delination of breeds and their uses without being overly verbose or scientific. A lot of the photographs have inscriptions on the back and those long forgotten letters are included. This is the true selling point of the book because it give you insight into the lives of these people and the their lives with their loved ones (both human and animal). A worthy buy for not only dog lovers but lovers of social history.

Editorial Review:

Move over Timmy and Lassie! Packed with gorgeous sepia-toned photographs, THE BEST DOG IN THE WORLD is a timeless tribute to loyal canine companions and the kids who adore them. Historian and dog lover Donna Long's insightful text provides a window into the lives of children during this golden age, while her notes about their patient pups shed light on the rising popularity of familiar breeds (as well as good old-fashioned mutts). From precious pugs to regal retrievers, this rare collection of portraits is a sweet, poignant, and captivating testament to the abiding love between children and their dogs.
