Excellent Book 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 7 people found this review helpful.

I couldn't be happier that I have this book. It explains everything that I needed to know about exposure, in such detail that a monkey could take better photos than Ansel Adams. I am so serious, If you have a DSLR, and you want to learn everything you can about it, you must have this book.

Great Book 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

I am an avid amateur digital photographer. I have read many books on exposure and techniques. This is one of the best ever. The explanations are clear, logical, and the presentation is easy to follow. A concept is explained and then one or more photographs are used to demonstrate the concept. I highly recommend this book.

Editorial Review:

Exposure can be the nemesis of photographers, but Jeff Wignall recognizes exposure as the secret for creating an image that captures a vision and shares it with the world. When you apply his techniques with patience, experimentation, and a focus on the outcome, you will begin creating images that reveal not only what you saw, but how you felt when you saw it. By learning to work with natural light as well as when to use flash you will confidently capture action, night scenes, rainbows, sunsets, and reflections like never before.

Editorial Review:

Professional and amateur photographers alike will find an array of strategies in this guide that demonstrates how to use classic visual design principles to create strong, compelling, nature photos. Veteran photographer and naturalist Brenda Tharp presents a full-colour guide that incorporates classic design principles with a deeper understanding of the natural world and its "moments". While many photographers may be experts with the technical aspects of photography, they must also know how to incorporate visual design, strong composition, mood, and bold use of colour in order to take their work to the next level. Learning to capture the moment in nature - which, as all photographers know, is an unpredictable subject at best - is the primary focus of this reference. Readers will find not only dozens of specific techniques for effective outdoor photography, but also practical advice for creating photographs that are emotionally compelling and, in turn, an artistic success. Individual chapters are devoted to such topics as "Light - The Raw Material", "The Elements of Visual Design", "Using Color Effectively", and "Putting It All Together". Plus, clear and to-the-point exercises along with 200 full-colour reproductions aim to inspire readers to achieve more creative, more expressive and more personal photographs.

Editorial Review:

The Photographer's Eye by John Szarkowski is a twentieth-century classic--an indispensable introduction to the visual language of photography. Based on a landmark exhibition at The Museum of Modern Art in 1964, and originally published in 1966, the book has long been out of print. It is now available again to a new generation of photographers and lovers of photography in this duotone printing that closely follows the original. Szarkowski's compact text eloquently complements skillfully selected and sequenced groupings of 172 photographs drawn from the entire history and range of the medium. Celebrated works by such masters as Cartier-Bresson, Evans, Steichen, Strand, and Weston are juxtaposed with vernacular documents and even amateur snapshots to analyze the fundamental challenges and opportunities that all photographers have faced. Szarkowski, the legendary curator who worked at the Museum from 1962 to 1991, has published many influential books. But none more radically and succinctly demonstrates why--as U.S. News & World Report put it in 1990--"whether Americans know it or not," his thinking about photography "has become our thinking about photography."

Editorial Review:

The Camera, together with The Negative and The Print, comprise The Ansel Adams Photography Series, a legendary triad of books about photographic technique that has become the most influential "how-to"series on photography ever written. The first edition of this series was completed in the 1950s. Adams completely revised and updated it just a few years before his death, making it his last word on the technical mastery of his medium. Three generations of photographers have learned how to approach the artistic possibilities of their art form through this seminal series. Now available in paperback, it remains as vital today as when it was first published.

The Camera covers 35 mm, medium format, and large-format view cameras and offers detailed advice on camera components such as lenses, shutters, and light meters. Adams' concepts of "visualization" and "image management" are the philosophical cornerstones of the book. Extensively illustrated with photographs by Adams as well as instructive line drawings, this classic manual belongs on every serious photographer's bookshelf

John Shaw Nature Photography review 4 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

I considered this an excellent book. It was written a few years back and had it's major emphasis on film photography. However, virtually all of the material is applicable for todays state of the art digital photography.

Editorial Review:

The problems facing the photographer in the great outdoors are special. Even highly-skilled photographers are often baffled by them. In this revised and updated version of his 1984 book, "The Nature Photographer's Complete Guide to Professional Field Techniques", noted wildlife and scenic photographer John Shaw draws on his own many years in the field to demonstrate how to overcome these problems and get not just good but great nature pictures. Covering every problem you might encounter in the field, Shaw offers his own approach to the challenges of on-the-spot nature photography. Using his own colour images as examples, he discusses each type of subject and situation you may encounter, while offering specific advice and techniques on how to successfully photograph it. A wide range of topics are covered, including equipment, lenses, composition, close-ups, and professional tips.

Worth over $100? 3 out of 5 stars.
3 of 4 people found this review helpful.

I've received and read the book, and enjoy the content. However, compared to many other books in the marketplace, I'm having a hard time comprehending where there is over $100 worth of value. It seems that everytime something is written by an academic and presented as a textbook, regardless of the content or quality, that the price is jacked up by 3 to 4 times what it is really worth. I'd suggest looking for a used version of this book unless you really want a pristine copy to show off to others.

Editorial Review:

This best-selling introductory photography text teaches students how to use the medium confidently and effectively by emphasizing both technique and visual awareness. Comprehensive in scope, this book features superb instructional illustrations and examples in its clear presentation of both black and white and color photography. London offers extensive coverage of digital imaging and the latest technological developments, such as Web page design and formatting photos on CD-ROMs.

Retired USNR O-6 2 out of 5 stars.
1 of 2 people found this review helpful.

I purchased the Plustek Optic Film 7200 + this tutorial book. The book was informative at first and convinced me to use the SilverFast SE software in lieu of the Quik-Scan. Unfortunately, the book scans over the SilverFast SE program and wants to tell you all about the Silverfast Ai programs and beyond. The author likes the NIKON scanners and really dwells on them. FYI - Silverfast out of Sarasota FL has a great Tech Support guy named Boris @ 941-921-4815 -- call between 3PM & 5:30 PM and he will talk you through your problems.

Editorial Review:

A large number of contemporary photographers have either moved into digital photography exclusively or use both analog and digital media in their work. In either case, there is most likely an archive of slides and negatives which cannot be directly integrated into the new digital workflow, nor can it be archived in a digital format. More and more, photographers are trying to bridge this gap using high-performance film scanners.

How to achieve the best possible digital image from a negative or slide, and how to build a workflow to make this process efficient, repeatable, and reliable, is the subject of this book. The author uses Nikon's filmscanners throughout, but all steps can easily be followed using a different scanner. The most common software tools for scanning (SilverFast, VueScan, NikonScan) are not only covered extensively in the book, but are also provided on a CD along with other useful tools for image editing, as well as numerous sample scans.

I was intruiged by this book and it's mate, The Better Photo Guide to Digital Photography, both by Jim Miotke. On receipt, the books were everything I had hoped for. The photographs and the accompanying data, are exceptional. Jim explains everything you need to know. The advice given is clear and understandable. The practicle applications in the form of "Assignments" make this book not only a good read but a fun hands on affair.
I would recommend this book to anyone, digital or film.

Excellent reference 5 out of 5 stars.

Excellent guide - especially in conjunction with your user manual - or if you don't have a user manual at all. The Magic Lantern Guides are clearly written. You can go from beginning to end or just by the certain sections for what you need.

Excellent ! 5 out of 5 stars.

Excellent resource for owners / users of Nikon D80. A lot to plough thru front to back, but very accessible for problem solving. Nikon D80 10.2MP Digital SLR Camera (Body only)

Get a Clue, It's a Guide Not the Nikon D80 Bible 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

This is my 3rd Magic Lantern Guide By Simon Stafford, and as usual it is just what I expected. Consise, clear, and to the point, READ: the title of the book is Magic Lantern GUIDE, Guide, get it? It is not the comprehensive D80 Bible, it is a Guide. Please review a book for what it is, not what what it is not. The title alone should tell you what it is not, C'mon people get it together, giving the book 1 star because of the editing? Please give me a break, an give a break to those who come here for a review of the content of the book, not its grammer.

Conclusion, If you want something to supplement your owners manual, this book is great. If you are looking for a book that is a concise, deep delving book into the D80 find it elsewhere, this is not it. It was not meant to be. Another good D80 book is the D80 Digital Field Manual, by David Busch. The two of these together make for a great resource for the D80.

Get the Magic Lantern Guide, you will like it!

Editorial Review:

The new, mid-priced Nikon D80 replaces the Nikon D70s/D70—which was the subject of our best-selling Magic Lantern Guide ever! This model features a 10 megapixel sensor, up-sized 2.5” LCD monitor, and 4.5 fps capability.

No Stone Unturned 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

If you're looking for a behind-the-scenes view at what it takes to be a truly successful commercial photographer, this book offers about the best picture you're going to get. I don't think John leaves one stone unturned in detailing all the facets of the business. Here is a sampling of some of the topics covered:

- Tactical decision making and serving the overall strategy
- Importance of proper equipment
- Being prepared for the unexpected
- Working with employees, contractors, interns, and apprentices
- Pricing and licensing your work to stay in business
- A real cost-of-doing-business approach with a photography-tailored CODB calculator
- Proper bookkeeping and accounting
- All types of insurance needed, and the importance of a COI (certificate of insurance)
- Everything about legal issues including copyright registration, infringements, and contract breaches
- All types of contracts and negotiations with real-life examples, and when to say "no"
- Why you need an accountant and an attorney, and what to ask them
- Great methods for dealing with slow and non-paying clients
- The power of email and professional writing along with the use of proper signatures
- Great advice on proper storage archiving, redundancy, security, and the importance of backing up both onsite and offsite in this new digital age

John also offers ample recommended reading at the end of each chapter, and sites excellent references from other sources throughout the book. There's no question John has been around the block multiple times in this industry. Some of the stories he tells are invaluable lessons and give real insights into the rapport of the business. The book is also up to date with discussions on the new and various methods of tapping into that extra stock revenue using the latest stock portals such as Digital Railroad and PhotoShelter. Through all of this, John does not lose sight of the importance of the human aspect, covering everything from the proper care and feeding of your clients to ongoing education, networking, charity, and giving back. And in case you are wondering, he explains how it is possible to do what you love and still have time for your loved ones.

In summary, a fantastic book, and one that will have a lasting impact on both your business and your personal life. Thanks John for paying it forward.

Editorial Review:

A truly successful photographic career means not only financial success, but also personal satisfaction and fulfillment. The goal of Best Business Practices for Photographers is to help you achieve success in each of these areas. This book is not a guide to taking better pictures or selling your photography. Instead, it explains how photographers can meet important business objectives. It covers the focal points of best practices - best practices in interacting with clients, best practices in negotiating contracts and licenses, and best practices in business operations. It provides a roadmap for successfully navigating these - and many other - issues facing photographers today.
