Editorial Review:

"Living With Blind Dogs," now in its second edition, is the only published resource book on this topic. It embodies helpful hints from hundreds of blind-dog owners, as well as years of ophthalmic nursing, veterinary, and dog training experiences. Both the veterinary community and dog owners alike continue to praise this text, in which Levin successfully answers the common question: "What do I do now?"

This revised edition contains all the topics covered in the first edition, such as: Dealing with feelings of loss and grief, how dogs react to blindness, conditions that cause blindness and how they progress, genetics, pack issues, training concepts, new skills, helpful hints to negotiate the house, yard, and community, toys, games, and suppliers/resources.

This revised edition also includes numerous new sections and chapters: Dogs both blind and deaf, dogs blind from birth, white canes and other devices, circling behaviors, changes in barking patterns, dealing with cats, giving eye drops, traveling and camping with a blind dog, adding another dog to the pack, dry eye syndrome, VKH, and new findings on PRA and SARD.

Editorial Review:

Dog Language tells us why dogs do what they do and how we can express ourselves so that our dogs can understand us better. It is a systematic book, ordered alphabetically with 293 entries and 94 beautiful drawings illustrating over 150 different dog expressions.

First published in Scandinavia in 1986 as Hundesprog’, this book became a great success and has since then helped many thousands of dog owners, instructors, behavior students, and veterinarians to understand dogs. Now available in English, the present edition of Dog Language is an updated, highly revised and enlarged version of the original Hundesprog’.

Following the traditions of the school of ethology founded by Konrad Lorenz, Dog Language is based on many hours of research, observation, and study. Dog Language is a no-nonsense book, written in a modern, uncomplicated style—a book for all readers with interest in dogs, wolves and other canids.

‘Dog Language is a book that will benefit anyone interested in what makes our dogs tick. It is a must for the professional dog handler or behaviorist, as well as any pet owner. Dog Language is well organized and written in a clear, easily understood manner. The beautiful illustrations help to explain what our canine companions are trying to communicate to us and each other. This is a rare opportunity to tap into the talent and expertise of a well known canine ethologist.’ Sandy Myers (President of Narnia Pet Behavior, member of the APDT and NADOI)

‘If we are to understand the domestic dog’s natural behavior, we must appreciate his social heritage and the adaptive significance of his many complex behavior patterns. Roger Abrantes’ book Dog Language provides this knowledge, and presents it in an easy to use and understand format. This encyclopedia of canine behavior is absolutely a must for all serious students of canine behavior and training!’ Linda P. Case (Lecturer in Companion Animal Science, University of Illinois, Dept. of Animal Science)

My Favorite Wall Calendar 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

This is the 3rd year in a row that I have ordered one of these calendars and they are the best! I don't own bulldogs but the pictures and humor in this calendar almost make me want one. My 2 year old daughter even laughs at the pictures!

Editorial Review:

Despite her bloodshot eyes, stout frame, and serious overbite, she's still "adora-bull." She's Zelda, the English bulldog known for her outrageous costumes and "biting" wisdom such as, "Don't cry over spilled milk--lap it up." Tough but tender, sweet but strong, Zelda reminds us to laugh at life--and ourselves.

* "This doggy diva is queen of the catwalk." --Oprah Winfrey

Each month of this full-color calendar features a hilarious image of Zelda donning one of her outlandish outfits accompanied by one of her trademark quips.

New to clicker training? Then this is a *must read* 5 out of 5 stars.
139 of 147 people found this review helpful.

Karen Pryor, the author of this book, is the woman who introduced clicker training into the dog training's world. As a dolphin trainer, she was convinced that the animal friendly method she used for training dolphins would work for dogs as well. And how right she was! Clicker training is now used by countless training schools and individual dog owners all over the world.

"Getting Started: Clicker Training for Dogs" explains what clicker training is, why you should use it and especially HOW to use it. Clicker training is not about the clicker or about food! It is about reinforcement and correct timing, in such a way that information is communicated between trainer and dog. Together you and the dog will learn a new way of interacting. Learn from this book how training can be FUN, both for you and your dog!

P.S.: no, clicker training is NOT about trick training (although you can use it to learn your dog funny tricks)! Learn from this book how to communicate with your dog using a clicker, and teach him to sit, lay down, heel, stay, NOT to jump up, NOT to pull etc. Enjoy!

Editorial Review:

New EXPANDED edition!

"New to clicker training? then this is a "must read". Learn from this book how training can be FUN, both for you and your dog!"

If you are curious about clicker training and want to give it a try, Getting Started: Clicker Training for Dogs is the place to begin. Karen Pryor's readabale, entertaining chapters introduce you to the why's and how's of clicker training from choosing a treat and timing the click to training a trick. Now in an expanded edition, Getting Started will introduce you to the power of positive training for your new puppy or older dog.

We are the sheepdog 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

A beautiful allegory that clearly illustrates our growth as Christians. We start as lost and disobedient, then through the gift of the Holy Spirit and the process of sanctification we become eager obedient servants of our God. I want to be the sheepdog.

Sheepdog Christianity 5 out of 5 stars.

I've read this book, and found it delightful. I've given it, along with the "Shepherd Looks at Psalm 23" to pastors for their ordinations. This particular book is a great analogy to our growth learning to trust, listen and obey Christ, and let go of the distractions of the world. It was deeply and practically insightful, yet simple enough I could read it for worship with children and they enjoy it as well as understand the deeper lessons as well. Very well done. Highly recommended.

Editorial Review:

Woven just under the surface of this simple parable, Philip Keller presents profound spiritual truth. It is the story of Lass, a worthless animal thought to be untrainable, who becomes a magnificent and valuable sheepdog—not terribly unlike how God's love can transform our worst characteristics into blessings that serve to further His Kingdom.

Editorial Review:

Inspired by the howling bestseller Bad Dog, this demented yet irresistible calendar features a year of dogs who just don’t live up to the "man's best friend" thing.

Every day offers an image of hilarious canine misbehavior in graphic full color: pugs stuffed into pathetic party outfits, bulldogs who can't stay off the sauce, yorkies who bite the hand that feeds them—with glee. Not to mention cranky corgis, spaniels with toilet-paper fetishes, snarky shar-peis, collies sporting sombreros, wet chihuahuas, and westies with delusions of grandeur.

They're stinky, they're sluggish, they're sullen, they're scruffy. The worst part? They don't care a whit. Naughty, naughty!

Almost 5 Stars... 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 2 people found this review helpful.

I enjoyed this book a lot since it was written by women writers. Also, each of the writers had very different stories so I did not feel like I was reading the same story from chapter to chapter. As another reviewer stated, I also appreciated the fact that these stories were not overly sappy. Although I did appreciate that the stories definitely seemed true, I was shocked that one writer actually admitted to beating her dog, following her sister's advice. In the same realm, although I appreciated the writer's honesty, I could not believe that a writer actually wrote that she did not miss her dog once it passed away. I just did not feel that these stories should have been included in a book titled "Woman's Best Friend". Otherwise, I enjoyed the book very much and would have given it 5 stars.

Editorial Review:

They may be known as man's best friend, but as the writers in this poignant, funny, and dramatic collection know, there's no gender divide when it comes to canines. Whether walking down the street, gathering at the dog park, hitting the open road, or spending one too many nights together on the couch in front of the TV, a woman and her dog are an enduring pair.

These stories touch upon the many ways dogs affect women's lives. From the Great Dane who doesn't live up to her breed's identity as a gentle giant, to the dachsund who takes up residence in the family car, to all the shepherds, labs, border collies, weimaraners, golden retrievers, and various mixes in between, the stars of this anthology get at the heart of the love--and yes, love-hate-- relationships women have with the dogs in their lives.
