A God-Given Treasure 5 out of 5 stars.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
This reprinting of the first translation of the New Testament by William Tyndale is a true treasure today - as was the original in 1526.
Through his ardent devotion, careful and diligent scholarship, and fluency in New Testament Greek, Tyndale seems to have accomplished an ideal pairing of literal accuracy and beautiful readability. Even though his original spellings have been retained in this reprinting, within my first day of reading this volume, I was able to become comfortable with these, and they have seldom slowed my reading since. I found it very easy to understand - a much easier and more fluid read than either the current renditions of the King James Bible or the writings of Shakespeare. The only drawbacks I noticed were the unfamiliar spellings (which I quickly moved beyond) and the use of chapter numberings only, with no verse numbers.
Tyndale's 1526 version was the first translation of the New Testament into English, and personally, I doubt that its overspreading of innate beauty and scholarship have been equalled since. It is said to have formed the basis for much of the 1611 "King James Version", but I far prefer the Tyndale translation. It is worth mentioning also, that the items noted in Tyndale's own errata on his 1526 version have been fully reflected in the text of this re-publication. This is no facsimile version, but a readable English text well-suited for serious study as well as for reading pleasure.
Someone has pointed out that, historically, it was around the time when written language moved beyond picture-based heiroglyphics to a more objective and stable, alphabet-based, form when the Old Testament first began to take shape; and that it was at the historical peak of precision and beauty in written language that the Greek New Testament was given. It seems that the original translation of the New Testament into English was no less a glorious work of providence and timing, and that Tyndale was ideally qualified for this very thing.
I believe that, apart from the gift of Jesus' own Presence and Spirit within the hearts of believers through the New Birth, the Tyndale translation of the New Testament was certainly the most wonderful gift that English-speaking believers in Christ have ever been given: God's Word beautifully and accurately conveyed in our own language. I believe this translation to be an authentic, and God-given treasure. I am so glad to have discovered it! I pray that you may too!
Editorial Review:
The publication in 1526 of a modestly-priced pocket edition of the New Testament in English was arguably the most important single event in the history of the English Reformation. This volume is a complete reprint of William Tyndale's pioneering translation of the New Testament from Greek into English. Produced at the same size as the original edition, it presents Tyndale's words in the original spelling. It has been transcribed and edited by Dr W.R. Cooper, and has an introduction by David Daniell, author of a biography of Tyndale and Chairman of the Tyndale Society. William Tyndale's influence has been as wide as Shakespeare's . Between 1525 and 1535 he gave us our English Bible, translating the whole of the New Testament and half of the Old Testament. His pocket-sized Bibles were smuggled into England, ruthlessly sought out by the Church, confiscated and destroyed. Tyndale himself was condemned as a heretic, strangled and burned outside Brussels in 1536.
Useful overview for postgraduates 4 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.
Although entitled 'an introduction' this book appears to be aimed more at the postgraduate Biblical Studies student. It includes an overview of different manuscripts, the various classification systems and how to use them, other witnesses, textual criticism, how to use critical editions and concludes with a brief summary of the various manuscript witnesses for Revelation, the Pauline corpus, Acts and the Catholic epistles and the Gospels.
The author's writing style is clear and scholarly with a vast repository of bibliographic notes which should provide the reader with most of the information they need to find more on a particular subject. The author requires the reader to read Greek, Latin and German to make the most of this book (most citations in those languages are untranslated) and there are particularly large sections of Greek in the final section.
This book served to highlight the importance and complexity of the textual critic's work, of the vast array of different manuscripts and the difficulties in classifying them, of the ways in which textual criticism can influence theology and exegesis and the many areas where further work is required, particularly with regard to postdoctoral research. This was an interesting and helpful book but not for the beginner in textual criticism.
Editorial Review:
This is the first major English-language introduction to the earliest manuscripts of the New Testament to appear for over 40 years. An essential handbook for scholars and students, it provides a thorough grounding in the study and editing of the New Testament text combined with an emphasis on the dramatic current developments in the field. Covering ancient sources in Greek, Syriac, Latin and Coptic, it • describes the manuscripts and other ancient textual evidence, and the tools needed to study them • deals with textual criticism and textual editing, describing modern approaches and techniques, with guidance on the use of editions • introduces the witnesses and textual study of each of the main sections of the New Testament, discussing typical variants and their significance. A companion website with full-colour images provides generous amounts of illustrative material, bringing the subject alive for the reader.
Inspiring collection for artists interested in collage
Mother and daughter artists Maryjo and Sunny Koch have compiled an inspiring portfolio of their collage-works in this new volume for artists and hobbyists entitled Vintage Collage-Works: Artful Ideas with Antique Ephemera. Employing basic collage techniques, these artists have created a wide range of distinctive collage projects using antique documents, vintage boxes and glassware, handmade papers, and ephemera of all kinds.
Both women are noted artists and teachers who bring their unique sensibilities to these easy yet sophisticated projects. In their new book, they show how ordinary vintage collectibles such as postcards, letters, prints, and photographs, can be transformed into stunning works of art by following just a few step-by-step techniques. By combining this vintage ephemera with readily available clip art, special papers, objects from nature, and sewing notions (such as buttons and ribbons), they create dozens of finished collage projects that can then by framed or used to make unique note cards, gift tags, or journals to share with family and friends.
This is an inspirational how-to book for any artist or hobbyist interested in collage, no matter what their level of expertise in the medium.
Editorial Review:
This book provides a unique perspective on the story of photography through the particular history of the photobook. The first of two extensive volumes, it is a study of the major trends and movements that have shaped the photobook genre since the birth of photography in the early nineteenth century. It represents a valuable catalogue of rare and important photobooks. This volume covers the history of photobooks from the earliest examples of the genre from the nineteenth century, through the modernist and propaganda books of the 1930s and 40s, to the radical Japanese photobooks of the 60s and 70s. While the history of photography is a well-established canon, much less critical attention has been directed at the phenomenon of the photobook, which for many photographers is perhaps the most significant vehicle for the display of their work and the communication of their vision to a mass audience. In the first of two volumes, both co-edited by Martin Parr and Gerry Badger, The Photobook provides a comprehensive overview of the development of the photobook, from its inception at the dawn of photography in the early nineteenth century through to the radical Japanese photobooks of the 1960s and 70s, by way of the modernist and propaganda books of the 1930s and 40s. In his introduction, Badger argues that the photobook is one of the most significant photographic genres due to the extent of its distribution and level of availability, and contests the traditional notion that the history of photography is best represented by the original print. This study provides an important corrective to the traditional history of photography. The selection of photographers made by Badger and Parr challenges the popular canon, and their survey of the history of the photobook reveals a secret web of influence and interrelationships between photographers and photographic movements around the world. The book is divided into a series of thematic and broadly chronological chapters, each featuring a general introductory text providing background information and highlighting the dominant political and artistic influences on the photobook in the period, followed by more detailed discussion of the individual photobooks. The chapter texts are followed by spreads and images from over 200 books, which provide the central means of telling the history of the photobook. Chosen by Parr and Badger, these illustrations show around 200 of the most artistically and culturally important photobooks in three dimensions, with the cover or jacket and a selection of spreads from the book shown. Volume One also features an illuminating and provocative introduction, 'The Photobook: Between the Film and the Novel' by Badger, which is accompanied by a preface written by Parr.
Editorial Review:
As Leni Riefenstahl turns 100, TASCHEN celebrates with a tribute to her remarkable Africa oeuvre. When she was in her early sixties, Riefenstahl began voyaging frequently to the African continent, where she has worked on various film and photography projects over the last half century. Her favorite destination was in Sudan, where she lived with and photographed the Nuba tribes people, learning their language and becoming their friend. The Nuba were a loving and peaceful people who welcomed Riefenstahl as one of their own. Her images of the Nuba, as well as of the Dinka, Shilluk, Masai, and other tribes, are gathered in this monumental book. Riefenstahl remembers her experiences in Africa as the happiest moments in her life. Her beautiful, skilled photographs represent a landmark in the extraordinary career of the 20th century's most unforgettable artistic pioneer. This work is presented in XXL-Format: 34.5 X 50 cm (13.4 X 19.7 in.). There are limited edition of 2,500 copies worldwide, each numbered and signed by Leni Riefenstahl. It features an interview by Kevin Brownlow, and includes an extensive bibliography and a biography section. All color illustrations are color-separated and reproduced in Aniva, the finest reproduction technique available today, which provides unequalled intensity and color range. The duotone illustrations are made with Novatone, a special treatment for black and white images that produces exquisite tonal range and density.
Editorial Review:
Today, more than ever, you can't judge a book by its cover. Why? Because two trends in bookmaking are pushing the boundaries of what it means to write, read and experience a book. This guide explores the creative processes behind "altered books" - when artists make their own distinctive mark on an already published work - and "collaborative journals" - in which many artists come together to create a unique single work. It reveals how to alter treasured books through collage, paint, layering, sewing and more, showing how communities of artists can come together to select a topic, set up a project and ultimately publish or display their finished collaborative work. The guide presents the work of cutting-edge altered book artists and some of their favourite techniques revealing how to choose a book to alter, what you can do to its pages and cover and even how to experiment with common household materials to create unique bindings. Techniques such as burning, cutting windows, extensions, inclusions, photo transfers, gelatin prints, computer manipulation and many others are explored within the guide with tips on how to start a Round Robin, or join one through the Internet, to maximize collaborative dun whilst avoiding potential pitfalls.
Informative and Entertaining 4 out of 5 stars.
21 of 23 people found this review helpful.
Nicholas A. Basbanes has a love affair going with the printed word. Not just the book --- the printed word, be it chiseled on stone 2,000 years ago, scrawled on wallpaper, palm leaves or cloth, or even imprinted on a computer screen the day before yesterday.
That is the main message delivered in this, the third of a trio of books he has written celebrating the triumphs, tragedies, perils and potentialities of print. A SPLENDOR OF LETTERS, a kind of miscellaneous grab bag of print-talk, was preceded by A GENTLE MADNESS (1995) and PATIENCE & FORTITUDE (2001). Truly, a man obsessed with his subject.
A SPLENDOR OF LETTERS is a book full of fascinating bits of information on all sorts of subjects relating to the printed word. This is at once its main attraction and its principal drawback. Much of the information packed into these pages is interesting in itself, but the book has no single overarching theme, seemingly no real purpose except to display the author's enthusiasm and interest for his subject.
Among the many topics touched upon in this bag of scholarly/literary potato chips are the disappearance of many important texts produced by ancient civilizations; the question of whether a modern copy of an ancient book can or should replace the original; the wanton destruction of valuable libraries in places like ancient Carthage, Nazi Germany, Sarajevo, Cambodia and Tibet; the morality of physically mutilating books in order to turn their valuable illustrations into objects of commerce; the morality of breaking up great library collections so their contents can be sold off for cash to meet current needs; the best means of preserving printed records for the longest time; and --- inevitably --- the already looming question of whether electronic books will make the familiar object we hold in our hands today a mere museum curiosity anytime soon.
Basbanes tries hard to be objective about all of this. He has sought out people on all sides of every question he considers --- but his sympathies obviously seem in the end to lie with the preservationists and the physical book rather than with its electronic doppelganger.
Every new development in the advancement of print has been greeted, he assures us, by people who saw it as the end of literature. He has resurrected a Medieval monk named Johannes Trithemius, who urged his fellow monks not to stop copying manuscripts by hand just because printing had been invented ("The written word on parchment will last a thousand years. The printed word is on paper. How long will it last? The most you can expect a book of paper to survive is two hundred years..."). And even so modest a modern forward step as the idea of equipping pencils with rubber erasers rang alarm bells among educators ("the easier errors may be corrected, the more errors will be made").
Basbanes seems thoroughly at home rummaging around in the distant past to describe fascinating documentary finds in odd corners of Egypt, Pakistan and similar remote places. His tales of great modern-day book collectors are also interesting. And he devotes much of the latter part of his book to the computer-vs.-physical book controversy, reporting for instance that computer files are proving to be a terrible means of preserving data because the swift pace of technological advance in computerdom quickly makes obsolete whatever machines could read them when they were created. And he has uncovered a delightful quote from someone named W. T. Williams back in the 1980s --- that is, in computer terms, back in prehistoric times: "Man is the only computer yet designed which can be produced entirely by unskilled labor."
A SPLENDOR OF LETTERS is informative and entertaining. The only problem with it is trying to answer the question: What, exactly, is it about?
--- Reviewed by Robert Finn
Editorial Review:
In A Splendor of Letters, Nicholas A. Basbanes continues the lively, richly anecdotal exploration of book people, places, and culture he began in 1995 with A Gentle Madness (a finalist that year for the National Book Critics Circle Award) and expanded in 2001 with Patience & Fortitude, a companion work that prompted the two-time Pulitzer Prize-winning historian and biographer David McCullough to proclaim him "the leading authority of books about books." In this beautifully packaged edition, Basbanes brings to a close his wonderful trilogy on the remarkable world of books and bibliophiles.
Daily Account 5 out of 5 stars.
9 of 9 people found this review helpful.
This book has been used so many times at the battlefield information desk that the cover is ready to fall off and the pages to splay out across the desk.
The daily accounts are brief yet informative and go far in giving the reader background material for a more researched dig into the past. The index is well laid out and gives the reader an excellent time line to help locate material, and the bibliography is on par with the index!
Your Civil War book shelf would not be complete without it!
Editorial Review:
Enjoy this collection of more than 300 vintage hand-tinted and black and white postcards from the 1900s to the 1960s, many dating to the 1940s, when a visiting author declared Pittsburgh "America's Gibraltar." Take a nostalgic tour in imagery and text of the city on the three rivers back when it was famous for its steel production and was known by all as the "Steel City." Admire its skyscrapers, churches, the arcade building, Union Station, and Mercy Hospital. Meander along downtown's busy Fifth Avenue and climb the mountains Pittsburgh is nestled amongst on the city's astonishing cliff-climbing public transports known as the "inclines." Finally, idle away a relaxing afternoon at Forbes Field, Pitt Stadium, Highland Park, the zoo, Nixon Theatre, or bathing at Lake Elizabeth.
collectables 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.
educational and informative, i would recommend this book to all bibliomaniacs, espeacially those who are just starting out
Listing is surprisingly incomplete 2 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.
I gave this book 2 stars because the reference sections are fairly well written and informative. However, the listing of collectible books for some genres is so incomplete that it is virtually useless to serious collectors. Collectible Science Fiction titles, for example, appear to have been selected arbitrarily. While there are a few token collectibles shown for some authors, many other collectibles have been omitted. In some cases less popular titles are included for some reason.
Some examples, with titles in quotes because italics are apparently not supported here:
Clarke, Arthur C. - "The Exploration of the Moon" is in the list; but "The Exploration of Space", famous for including the first prediction of communication satellites, is not. "Against the Fall of Night" and its successor "The City and The Stars" are also missing. If you search these titles on rare book retail websites such as AbeBooks, Biblio, and Alibris, you'll find a lot of coverage. The rarest editions are priced at over $1000.00, as is the case for "Against The Fall of Night": $1500.00. However there is also a large range of prices for the less rare or well-preserved editions. This pricing makes titles like these very popular with collectors.
Heinlein, Robert A. - "Space Cadet", his second novel, is not included. This is another baffling omission considering its popularity with collectors and its pricing. A volume I bought for $750.00 ten years ago is now getting $3500.00 in the retail market. Once again, there is a large range of prices for less valuable editions and/or copies, making it affordable to a corresponding range of budgets.
Ballard, J. G. - "Passport to Eternity" is the only title listed for this author. "The Wind from Nowhere" and "The Drowned World", his first two novels, are missing. Rare editions of these are typically priced in the thousands of dollars. These too are very sought-after items for collectors. "Empire of the Sun", a somewhat autobiographical novel that inspired the screenplay for the movie of the same title, is not here. "The Atrocity Exhibition", a very controversial collection short titles, is extremely rare and priced at over $10,000 for a first edition. Considering the literary merit of some of J. G. Ballard's writings, the inclusion of only one of his titles here - in this case one less valuable to collectors than his first two novels - is extremely disappointing.
I suppose some might say that this concentration on the Science Fiction genre (with the exception of some of J. G. Ballard's works) is outside the scope of this price guide. If so, it is a very limited scope. In addition, the title and publisher's description nowhere indicate that this listing is largely incomplete for some genres. I felt this was somewhat misleading, and that the word "Official" in the title implied a more complete price listing. "The Official Overstreet Comic Book Price Guide", produced by the same publisher (and with "Official" in the same font!), provides such a listing and thus is appropriately named. "Official Price Guide To Collecting Books" is not.
Have a good one,
UpRight Ape
