For Coin Collectors 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I've relied on older editions of the Official Red Book for information about various coins that I've seen. Having been a coin collector since I was a child, I decided to purchse this book to see what information has changed or been updated. From time to time, I've found unexpected coins in my change and I enjoy being able to look them up to see what they are, what historical period they might represent, etc. It also helps me understand this country's history through its coinage.

Editorial Review:

It was the most expensive bottle of wine ever sold.

In 1985, at a heated auction by Christie’s of London, a 1787 bottle of Château Lafite Bordeaux—one of a cache of bottles unearthed in a bricked-up Paris cellar and supposedly owned by Thomas Jefferson—went for $156,000 to a member of the Forbes family. The discoverer of the bottle was pop-band manager turned wine collector Hardy Rodenstock, who had a knack for finding extremely old and exquisite wines. But rumors about the bottle soon arose. Why wouldn’t Rodenstock reveal the exact location where it had been found? Was it part of a smuggled Nazi hoard? Or did his reticence conceal an even darker secret?

It would take more than two decades for those questions to be answered and involve a gallery of intriguing players—among them Michael Broadbent, the bicycle-riding British auctioneer who speaks of wines as if they are women and staked his reputation on the record-setting sale; Serena Sutcliffe, Broadbent’s elegant archrival, whose palate is covered by a hefty insurance policy; and Bill Koch, the extravagant Florida tycoon bent on exposing the truth about Rodenstock.

Pursuing the story from Monticello to London to Zurich to Munich and beyond, Benjamin Wallace also offers a mesmerizing history of wine, complete with vivid accounts of subterranean European laboratories where old vintages are dated and of Jefferson’s colorful, wine-soaked days in France, where he literally drank up the culture.

Suspenseful, witty, and thrillingly strange, The Billionaire’s Vinegar is the vintage tale of what could be the most elaborate con since the Hitler diaries. It is also the debut of an exceptionally powerful new voice in narrative non-fiction.

Blue Book Of Gun Values-Great Guide 4 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

This is THE guide to have. It is very useful in showing the trend your gun may be making as time goes by. You need to know the specifics of the gun, and this is reasonably descriptive. Not always easy to find your specific model as it may be listed in other areas than you would suspect, but not difficult either. It is good at giving "ballpark" prices to expect, but as always you can't count on getting that price. You may see a great variance due to demand, or condition(many think their gun is in better shape than the buyer does--a gun in "as new" shape may be booked at say 550 bucks, but yours has lost a lot of bluing, and the stock is flawed a bit from rubbing shrubs and such, so it may be woth only 325. you need to be honest with yourself on the condition.). Also a particular gun may be in much more demand in certain geographic areas, as opposed to others.
Emotions will affect price also "I had one of those years ago" or "My dad/granddad used to have one of those". Thoughts like these may inflate the buying price greatly.
But, I get off topic. This is a good guide, and for the average gun it reflects the market quite well. Any collector, gun show enthusiast, or a person just wondering what is what would do well to buy this. It is a guide, not a Bible. Dan Wickham

Profound Devotional 5 out of 5 stars.

This book has been a profound daily devotional for me for 15 + years. I have read it every year. The insights this man of God had are some of the most relevant, authentic, and remarkable devotions I have ever read. I continue to be amazed.

Most Beautiful Edition of a Wonderful Devotional 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

I have been an Oswald Chambers follower for many years. I had been reading a tattered copy that belonged to my dad. For my birthday today I got this copy for my birthday and it is so very special. The leather cover is so soft and beautiful. Two shades of purple and liliac. Soft and comfortable to hold.

The dovotions are still current today. They make you look deep within your heart to what God is saying to you.

Highly recommend.

Let down ending.... 2 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I agree with most of the reviews - it was a great book. After many repetitions of the theme, I had to wonder where it was going. I am not going to spoil the ending, but will say that I was disappointed, apparently others were not. For me it was anti-climatic. It built up to a let down.

There should have been some sort of explanation for the phenomena. Maybe the sequel will cover it, or the movie!?!?

Extremely strong premise 4 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

With over 300 reviews, it's clear this book has struck a chord with readers. I found it in a charity book store, and was intrigued by its one sentence 'hook' about what would happen if you could live your life over and over and over again.

For the first three quarters of the book, the author delivers 5 star material. In particular, the 'second time around life' of the protagonist is rendered in exceptionally compelling and believable detail that kept me turning pages with scarcely a thought about anything else.

The book goes off the rails a bit in the last quarter. However, I cared about the main character and his love interest all the way through the book. Moreover, although their is a fantastic premise at the heart of the book, I would not classify this book as fantasy or science fiction. it's really speculative fiction, done well, off of a heckuva premise.

Editorial Review:

Jeff Winston didn't know he was a replayer--until he died. Then he woke up 25 years younger, lived another life, then died again . . . and lived again . . .and died again. . . . Maybe one of these lifetimes, he'll get it right. Winner of the World Fantasy Award.

From Wacky to Zippy 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

As one of the cartoonists who created a few of the Wacky Packages shown in the book, my view of the project is far from objective---but I thought it was fun to see such pop ephemera resurface 34 years later as an Abrams art book! Who would've thought, back in 1974, as I cruised the aisles of the San Francisco Safeway with Art Spiegelman, hunting for likely targets, that our little barbs sent at consumerism and package design would have such staying power? I shudder to think it, but more people probably saw my "Generally Demented Light Bulbs" or "Kentucky Fried Fingers" Wacky Packs than ever read one of my Zippy comic books.
-Bill Griffith
Zippy:Walk A Mile In My Muu-Muu(Zippy (Graphic Novels))

Editorial Review:

Wacky Packages—a series of collectible stickers featuring parodies of consumer products and well-known brands and packaging—were first produced by the Topps company in 1967, then revived in 1973 for a highly successful run. In fact, for the first two years they were published, Wacky Packages were the only Topps product to achieve higher sales than their flagship line of baseball cards. The series has been relaunched several times over the years, most recently to great success in 2007.

Known affectionately among collectors as “Wacky Packs,” as a creative force with artist Art Spiegelman, the stickers were illustrated by such notable comics artists as Kim Deitch, , Bill Griffith, Jay Lynch, and Norm Saunders.

This first-ever collection of Series One through Series Seven (from 1973 and 1974) celebrates the 35th anniversary of Wacky Packages and is sure to amuse collectors and fans young and old.

Useful, but outdated 4 out of 5 stars.
12 of 13 people found this review helpful.

While useful and informative and, indeed, a must if you buy coins, this book is quite outdated. Since the price of gold and silver have gone up considerably and change daily, the effect on coins is intense in many cases.

There are several sites online where you can get more up-to-date information. Yet having this handy is a good idea. I like having something near my work area and in my hands so I can quickly look up the information I want. Then I can follow that up by going to one of the Web sites.

This book is nice to use when you are wanting to sell one of your coins. It would be a better book if it would come in spiral bound so that it is easier to use.

Since 1942, the Handbook of United States Coins (THE OFFICIAL BLUE BOOK®) has been the annual reference used by U.S. coin dealers to make buying offers.
