A treasure trove of ideas! 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

I see this book as an embroidery refresher, and a taking off point for great creativity. I am not likely to exactly follow any patterns in the book, but have already borrowed bits and pieces of them, and used them as a jumping off point for my own ideas and designs. It had honestly never occurred to me to get this creative with embroidery. This ain't your granny's embroidery! But it sure is fun!

Editorial Review:

Begin by learning several styles for outlining, filling, decorating, and appliqué. Find out about floss, fancy threads, fabrics, and needles. Get the scoop on hoops, and the lowdown on transferring your very own designs onto every type of fabric. The fresh ideas, witty patterns, and clever color illustrations take stitchers from novice to accomplished in a blink of the eye!

Exquisite details! 4 out of 5 stars.
12 of 12 people found this review helpful.

You are taken through the basic steps that might mystify you before you start, such as finishing off thread. The exquisite details will help in getting you through the stages of the embroidery. The pages of the book are stiff and you need a book stand with clips to keep it open. I found the variety of stitches demonstrated inspiring and will go back to the book as I progress in a project. An important detail not included was the angle of a needle to have a bead sit straight (found in another book). Excellent referral source.

My Favorite Bead Embroidery book 5 out of 5 stars.
8 of 8 people found this review helpful.

I haven't had a chance to try the techniques out yet but in thumbing through the pages this one looks by far the best bead embroidery book I've seen as far as illustrations and easy to understand instructions go.

Editorial Review:

Even beginning beaders can learn to add beauty and texture to their needlework projects with this practical, user-friendly and vividly illustrated guide. The author offers step-by-step instructions and diagrams to help novices and experts alike master the techniques. Full-color photos of a wide variety of motifs will inspire readers to create their own unique, personalized embellishments to jeans, jackets, sweaters, bags, shoes, scarves, pillows and more.

OK I guess 3 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

This book is everything it says it is and less. Ok it is an ok book. I purchased it for the iron on transfers. First let me say that there are many in the book so I cannot fault them there. I was sadly disappointed though that they were all so outdated. You might as well spend a dollar here and there and buy some of Aunt Martha's iron on transfers. Or better yet, some tracing paper. There isn't anything in this book that you can't doodle yourself. I would say for those just starting out, this would be an excellent sourse of transfers if you like funky little space ships, mariachi dancers and fruit. I did like the martini glasses, lol.

Editorial Review:

Elizabeth Taylor, Carrie Fisher, Tracey Ullman, and Laura Dern all own her work. Now, in her much-anticipated first book, embroidery pioneer Jenny Hart brings her sublime designs to everyone. Expanding on the offerings of her Stitch-It Kit, Sublime Stitching offers all the instructions, tips, and hip patterns needed to create hundreds of stylish projects. Perfect for stitchers of all experience levels, this charmingly photographed book includes simple directions and inspiring project ideas for stitching up jeans, handbags, neckties, baby bibs, and more. Best of all are the entirely original, ready-to-use iron-on patterns bound in the back. Jenny has included all sorts of delightful designs from cheeky margaritas and maracas to classic teapots and cupcakes. These patterns are easy to remove after using, and a cinch to store in the handy pockets on the inside covers. Believe it or not, each pattern can be used up to nine times. Now that's sublime.

Wonderful resource 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

This revised edition is a great resource for both beginners and more advanced users. The illustrations and instructions are very clear and easy to follow and the allover design is very good.

Easy to follow directions 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

This book on embroidery was just what I needed. The diagrams are easy to follow, the book has a lot of different stitches, and tells you what the stitches are mostly used for. This is a good book for a beginner and reference for the experienced.

Great resource 4 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

I wanted a reference of all the possible stitches I might want to use at any given point in my work. This is perfect for that. However, there descriptions on how to reproduce the stitches aren't intuitive and I felt at times there were steps missing. I made up the missing steps, but it meant that a couple of the stitches just never quite turned out the way I wanted them (i.e., like the pictures in the book). This was true especially for the very complicated stitches that resulted in complex geometric patterns. I would recommend this for any advanced embroiderer who wants a quick picture reference of what stitches might work in this situation. I would not recommend it for beginners.

Editorial Review:

First published in 1934, Mary Thomas' book has long been a favorite of novice and experienced embroiderers alike. Updated by Jan Eaton, it pictures and describes more than 400 embroidery stitches arranged by usage.

You will be spellbound by the gorgeous jewelry designs in this groundbreaking book! I bought "The Art of Bead Embroidery" along with "Beading with Cabochons" and I have already taken on a grand design myself even though I am new to 'seed beading'. The gallery photos are irresistable inspiration. These two designers are certainly at the forefront of this beadwork style. I suggest both books will give you tutorials and ideas to keep you beading and getting rave results.

Editorial Review:

“Haute homespun out of the Deep South.” That’s how Vogue magazine has described the fashion of Natalie Chanin. Alabama Stitch Book brings us a collection of projects and stories from her clothing and lifestyle company, Alabama Chanin, known for the cutting-edge twist it puts on tried-and-true sewing, quilting, and embroidery techniques, applied mostly by hand to recycled cotton jersey.

This long-awaited book from Chanin begins with her story. After living in New York and Vienna for over 20 years, she began to transform cotton T-shirts into high fashion using the needlework skills she learned as a child in Florence, Alabama. When she moved home, Chanin hired local women (many of whom had worked in the state’s now defunct textile factories) to stitch her couture collections with her.

What follows is a step-by-step guide to the stitching, stenciling, and beading techniques used in the 20 projects showcased in the book: T-shirts, skirts, and corsets that are sold at chic shops around the world, plus a journal cover, sampler quilt, and tablecloth, among others. Also included are a pullout stencil, perforated postcard for bead-embroidery, and reusable patterns. Throughout are Robert Rausch’s beautiful photographs set against the back roads, farms, and homesteads of the rural South.

Digitizing Made Easy 4 out of 5 stars.
8 of 9 people found this review helpful.

A good generalized informative book on digitizing. I perhaps was looking for more specific ideas on shading, etc. I think I will be purchasing some of those books in the not too distant future.

Clearly illustrated how-to's, demystifies stitching issues 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I never thought I'd pick up a book about a subject like digitizing and find it fascinating---but this book exceeded my expectations. It is very clearly written and has helpful illustrations throughout. In addition to the how-to's, the author also covers the history of embroidery machines before the computer era, and how some of the knowledge from those early years helps with digitizing with a computer today. I just wish I'd bought this book from Amazon, because I paid list price for it at a sewing shop. I'd recommend this book to anyone interested in digitizing and computerized embroidery. It explains why designs sometimes don't stitch out as well as expected, how to digitize to avoid problems, and what to look for when shopping for digitizing software.

Editorial Review:

"Digitizing Made Easy" is for every embroidery machine user and commercial machine embroiderer looking to better understand and utilise digitising software. The author's time-tested methods, demonstrated in 250 step-by-step colour photographs, will help readers to identify the tools of modern digitising, and the best processes with which to use them. With chapters covering artwork, auto-digitising, stitch types, mapping and sequencing, underlay and blending, readers will quickly develop a solid foundation with which to explore the endless possibilities of digitising.

My favorite book! 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

This is absolutely my favorite crewel book! Katherine Shaugnessy has taken crewel to a new level that works with the modern as well as the traditional home decor. Her instructions and diagrams are designed for the novice as well as the experienced embroiderer. She has so many new and different ideas and ways to use embroidery you won't know where to begin. Her fantastic use of color is the key to this super book and I can't wait to get started! This is definately a must have for anyone who loves embroidery as I do.

Editorial Review:

One look at these pages and you know that this isn't your grandmother's crewel, but a hip, contemporary update that will have everyone reaching for a needle and thread. And these projects are easy, too, because crewel has no counting, no grids, and no cross-stitch--just beautiful free-form embroidery. Dive right in, guided by a basics chapter that explains how to do the different stitches, ranging from French knots to laid filling. Novices will swiftly move on to the 30 practice designs, all accompanied by easy-to-follow instructions and diagrams, and a dozen lovely projects. Make a card or keepsake scrapbook embellished with stitched motifs, colorful totes, table runners, and an elegant tryptich.
