Cute patterns, confusing instructions 3 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

I bought this book because it has some very cute, unique patterns that I hadn't seen anywhere else (koala, lemur). It's a very nice book to look at, with its full color photographs of all the different creations. However, the lack of certain instructions makes it difficult for an amigurumi-novice.

For example, there are almost no instructions on how to assemble the animals once you've made the pieces. I had to resort to online tutorials (crochetme.com) to find this information. I think the author should have devoted at least one page to assembly and how to sew the pieces together, with photos to illustrate. The book has a great section on basic crochet stitches, with big, clear photos, so it seemed silly that in an amigurumi book, there wasn't a similar page for animal assembly.

As others have stated, the patterns rely a lot on how they are stuffed to make the shapes as pictured. Also, I really only found about half of the patterns appealing.

Consensus-
Pros: Cute, unique patterns, nice photos, easy to read
Cons: Little to no instruction on assembly or stitching pieces together; for some of the animals, you can find better patterns online

Editorial Review:

From the creator of RoxyCraft.com, a collection of adorable crocheted creatures.

This colorful guide presents twenty-one sweet and simple-to-make yarn creatures for crafters young and old. Each animal is assembled using several basic crochet stitches—stitches even beginners can easily master—and the results, from a winsome little lamb to a wide-eyed lemur, make for delightful yarn friends.

I am so glad I bought this book. As easy as it seems I am taking lessons with my serger and with the help of this book I will be well on my way with good instruction. This will be my serging bible. Thanks Stephie

Helpful but specific for Baby Lock. 3 out of 5 stars.

This is a nice addition to the serger workbook by Baby Lock. Most of the projects I would not do because they are dated but the fundamental techniques are helpful to those new to serging.

Editorial Review:

Timesaving techniques are a big part of today's hobbies, and in this beginner's guide to serging author Nancy Zieman demonstrates the essential skills to quickly and easily create stunning fashions, accessories and home decor projects. This book gives sewers: Solid skills for operating multi-threaded, multi-needled sergers and completing sewing projects more quickly than with regular sewing machines; guidelines to serging tools and terms; 20 projects to enhance the home and wardrobe; and confidence to tackle more complex techniques and projects. "Serge With Confidence" empowers sewers to tackle a new skill, and seek out projects to challenge themselves.

101 Needlepoint Stitches and How to Use Them 5 out of 5 stars.
120 of 120 people found this review helpful.

This is a great and easy to use book by the extremely knowledgable needleworker, Hope Hanley. This softcover book provides detailed information for the beginning and advanced needlepointer on a wide variety of stitches. Of special interest is a four page reference section where stitches are listed according to their use as a background, filling, detail, quick to stitch, slow to stitch and best canvas. If you are looking for a great, inexpensive and user friendly guide to needlepoint, this is it! I highly recommend this book to the new needlepointer and the experienced stitcher as well.

101 Needlepoint Stitches 5 out of 5 stars.

I bought this book for a reference, and it is great. The examples are clear, and include suggestions for best use. I like to suggestions about materials, canvas, and needles.

Finally, I understand basketweave!!! 4 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

This book does an excellent job of explaining stitches. For the first time, I undersand how to do a basketweave stitch. That alone is worth the price of the book!! The only reason I didn't give this book 5 stars is because the examples of the completed stitches are in black and white. This and the chucky yarn makes it difficult to see the finished stitch.

A new edition of a classic 5 out of 5 stars.
32 of 32 people found this review helpful.

This book is a new edition of "Victorian Needlepoint". It has new pictures, and more importantly, new computer-generated charts. If you have seen the old one, the charts were hand drawn and indecipherable in places. This edition provides clear charts so you don't have to guess which color is used, or where the stitches fall. And the designs are beautiful and timeless. I have the old edition and just got this one...a must have for needlepoint fans!

Editorial Review:

This glorious guide presents 25 classic needlepoint projects based on the designs of William Morris and his contemporaries in the Arts & Crafts movement.

Arts & Crafts Needlepoint is an exquisite collection of patterns inspired by one of the most influential design movements of the Victorian era—from the lush florals of William Morris to the luminous stained-glass motifs of the Tiffany Studios. The designs range from the simple to the more elaborate, with alternative patterns often provided. Each of the designs is accompanied by clear, stitch-by-stitch charts, suggestions for the best needle size and canvas mesh, precise yarn requirements, stitch types, and order of work. A practical reference section also provides complete information on basic techniques and framing. Originally published as Victorian Needlepoint, and republished here with new photos and designs, this is a timeless collection for all needleworkers.

A real worth of your collections 5 out of 5 stars.
27 of 30 people found this review helpful.

I am always fascinated with Helen's works. This one particular. I should say her technique is not that complicated and subtle compared to Chinese SuZhou embroidery's. But her ways of interpreting country creatures like flowers, plants, birds, animals are so vivid that they seem to come to life. Her stitches are just like impressionists' stroke, which capture the every essential piece of natural beauty. I love her landscape works especially. I regret not seeing so many landscape works in this book, but her two works of the same scene in late spring and early winter already ensnare my heart and I highly recommend this book to anyone who loves embroidery and nature.

Editorial Review:

Helen M. Stevens celebrates the use of embroidery to mark traditions and anniversaries throughout the year. Each month is explored through traditional celebrations such as Christmas and Easter, Thanksgiving and the Fourth of July, as well as through the changing scenes in nature. The author shares her special talents demonstrating to readers how to observe the natural world and translate it into exquisite embroidery. This book includes detailed diagrams and instructions for all the techniques and stitches.

Beautiful Bargello 4 out of 5 stars.
21 of 21 people found this review helpful.

Gorgeous photography and a very artistic author make this book a joy to own for any needlework enthusiast. I plan on making several of these cushions for my living room and have already completed 2 of them.

I think the book could have been much better, however, and even more informative had the author not infused it with gushy, flowery pages about color that made no sense and were totally useless.

For example:

"The dynamic quality of these reds enhances productivity and renews ambition. The interspersed touches of violet release negativity, cool and calm hidden emotions, encouraging a sense of distance so impulsive reactions can be changed into meaningful actions". What does one do with that piece of info?

But I only bought it for the artistry and it is very artistic at that. I still would buy another bargello book if she put one out. Hopefully she will devote more space to her beautiful artistry and less, much less, to the literary fru fru.

Beautiful Bargello, the flame stitch 5 out of 5 stars.

I have plied a needle for many years and bought this book in hope of adding to my skills. The patterns are clear and easy to follow with less eyestrain than with just black and white charts. I usually work in miniature and much to my delight found this technique to be very adaptable. I then went in search of other publications for bargello and although I found several none of them lived up to my expectations after viewing and using the information in this publication. Hopefully Joyce Petschek and her editors have another book in the works.
