Cute patterns, confusing instructions 3 out of 5 stars.

I bought this book because it has some very cute, unique patterns that I hadn't seen anywhere else (koala, lemur). It's a very nice book to look at, with its full color photographs of all the different creations. However, the lack of certain instructions makes it difficult for an amigurumi-novice.

For example, there are almost no instructions on how to assemble the animals once you've made the pieces. I had to resort to online tutorials (crochetme.com) to find this information. I think the author should have devoted at least one page to assembly and how to sew the pieces together, with photos to illustrate. The book has a great section on basic crochet stitches, with big, clear photos, so it seemed silly that in an amigurumi book, there wasn't a similar page for animal assembly.

As others have stated, the patterns rely a lot on how they are stuffed to make the shapes as pictured. Also, I really only found about half of the patterns appealing.

Consensus-
Pros: Cute, unique patterns, nice photos, easy to read
Cons: Little to no instruction on assembly or stitching pieces together; for some of the animals, you can find better patterns online

This is a nice addition to the serger workbook by Baby Lock. Most of the projects I would not do because they are dated but the fundamental techniques are helpful to those new to serging.

This is a great and easy to use book by the extremely knowledgable needleworker, Hope Hanley. This softcover book provides detailed information for the beginning and advanced needlepointer on a wide variety of stitches. Of special interest is a four page reference section where stitches are listed according to their use as a background, filling, detail, quick to stitch, slow to stitch and best canvas. If you are looking for a great, inexpensive and user friendly guide to needlepoint, this is it! I highly recommend this book to the new needlepointer and the experienced stitcher as well.

I bought this book for a reference, and it is great. The examples are clear, and include suggestions for best use. I like to suggestions about materials, canvas, and needles.

This book does an excellent job of explaining stitches. For the first time, I undersand how to do a basketweave stitch. That alone is worth the price of the book!! The only reason I didn't give this book 5 stars is because the examples of the completed stitches are in black and white. This and the chucky yarn makes it difficult to see the finished stitch.

This book is a new edition of "Victorian Needlepoint". It has new pictures, and more importantly, new computer-generated charts. If you have seen the old one, the charts were hand drawn and indecipherable in places. This edition provides clear charts so you don't have to guess which color is used, or where the stitches fall. And the designs are beautiful and timeless. I have the old edition and just got this one...a must have for needlepoint fans!

Her speciality is tapestries made with hand-dyed wools and many of her designs are historically accurate. I am always fascinated with Helen's works. This one particular. I should say her technique is not that complicated and subtle compared to Chinese SuZhou embroidery's. But her ways of interpreting country creatures like flowers, plants, birds, animals are so vivid that they seem to come to life. Her stitches are just like impressionists' stroke, which capture the every essential piece of natural beauty. I love her landscape works especially. I regret not seeing so many landscape works in this book, but her two works of the same scene in late spring and early winter already ensnare my heart and I highly recommend this book to anyone who loves embroidery and nature.

Gorgeous photography and a very artistic author make this book a joy to own for any needlework enthusiast. I plan on making several of these cushions for my living room and have already completed 2 of them.

I think the book could have been much better, however, and even more informative had the author not infused it with gushy, flowery pages about color that made no sense and were totally useless.

For example:

"The dynamic quality of these reds enhances productivity and renews ambition. The interspersed touches of violet release negativity, cool and calm hidden emotions, encouraging a sense of distance so impulsive reactions can be changed into meaningful actions". What does one do with that piece of info?

But I only bought it for the artistry and it is very artistic at that. I still would buy another bargello book if she put one out. Hopefully she will devote more space to her beautiful artistry and less, much less, to the literary fru fru.

I have plied a needle for many years and bought this book in hope of adding to my skills. The patterns are clear and easy to follow with less eyestrain than with just black and white charts. I usually work in miniature and much to my delight found this technique to be very adaptable. I then went in search of other publications for bargello and although I found several none of them lived up to my expectations after viewing and using the information in this publication. Hopefully Joyce Petschek and her editors have another book in the works.
