Editorial Review:

In Stitched in Time Alicia Paulson shares 30 beautiful, inventive, and thoughtful projects that encourage you to take your memories down from the bookshelf, out of the closet, or off the hard drive and bring them into your daily life. Creator of a charming line of handmade gifts and accessories called Posie: Rosy Little Things, Paulson organizes these adorable handmade mementos—each one incorporating unique elements such as photos, drawings, and other ephemera—into three sections: For the Little Ones, For Every Day, and For Special Occasions. Many projects are easy enough for the beginning sewer to complete, and Paulson explains all the necessary techniques, from hand- and machine-sewing to embroidery, appliqué, stenciling, and transferring photos to fabric.

In as little as a weekend anyone can create a keepsake for the ages that will be enjoyed every day—whether it’s a quilt made from outgrown baby clothes, an apron featuring a favorite family recipe, a tote bag documenting a treasured vacation, or a stuffed animal fashioned from a child’s drawing. With love incorporated into every stitch, these sweet projects each evoke the feeling of a special time and place, and are so much more than just a commemoration of events. Whether you want to remember your family summers at the beach or a daughter’s first apartment, a perfect gift for a loved one or a memento to keep all to yourself is just stitches away.

Knitting Mania 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

In this great little book, elizabeth Zimmerman, that great knitting guru who is no longer with us, has given us a ton of great ideas to keep us busy much more than the 12 months of the almanac. She has included some of her true classics in a chatty format, so we learn not just how to make an item, but how she went about creating it in the first place. Then, for those that need a quick read for a pattern, at the end of each chatty pattern, she gives the pithy, no-nonsense version.

This is a book that will be used over and over many times, so it might be a wise ides, when using a patterns, to xerox the pithy version and keep that in your knitting bag.

But don't ignore the chatty parts of the book. You learn how her mind worked in the creative process, and you might decide that there are some techniques that don't suit you for this pattern. If so, just drop that part and use the rest as a springboard for your own techniques. After all, as Elizabeth said, you are the boss of your knitting.

Editorial Review:

A year’s worth of knitting projects from the "Busy Knitter," called "one of America’s most ingenious and creative knitters." Classic patterns for Aran sweaters, baby items, blankets, mittens, moccasins and other seasonal needs may be followed by intermediate to advanced knitters, or may be adapted into original works. Charming, delightful informal and opinionated, very instructive. 35 illustrations.

VERY Disappointing! 2 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

This book was SO disappointing!

I'm a big fan of Aimee Ray on etsy... but it feels like she saved all of the good embroidery for herself. Her work online is a million times better than the work in this book. Don't let the cover fool you.

This book has very generic, boring projects. It has no creative flair and wasn't worth the money. The model consistently through the book is kind of annoying, too. I thought it was Aimee at first (since the model is pictured on the side of the book under the author's name), but, alas, Miss Ray is pictured in the back.

If you know how to embroider, I wouldn't recommend this book. If you like boring, old-fashioned and uncreative patterns, then buy! buy! buy!!!

Editorial Review:

Begin by learning several styles for outlining, filling, decorating, and appliqué. Find out about floss, fancy threads, fabrics, and needles. The fresh ideas, witty patterns, and clever color illustrations take stitchers from novice to accomplished in a blink of the eye!

Wonderful! 5 out of 5 stars.

I just knit my first pair of socks - ever! I had never even attempted to make socks before and just dove right in using this book for a guide. The pictures were great and the instructions were very helpful - the author includes boxes with tips throughout the instructions - it seemed she was always addressing the very question I had in mind at that very moment.

This was a great way to learn to knit socks - working on two at a time let me use stitches and concepts that were brand new to me 2x in a row (which I like to think really reinforced it for me!) and gave me instant satisfaction - when I was done I popped them on my feet without having to start all over to make a second one!

Editorial Review:

Why knit one sock and then start all over again to make a match? Instead, knit two socks at the same time on two circular needles! With this creative approach, you can slip a sock on each foot as soon as you bind off.

* Get off to a great start with one basic sock pattern; then experiment with seven more designs

* Make cuffs, feet, and toes match exactly from sock to sock; no more measuring as you go

* Discover how easy it is to convert any sock pattern for double-pointed needles to this ingenious method

The one book you can't knit without 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

If you ever needed just one knitting book, this is it. This is like having milk and butter and eggs in the fridge. You can't make anything without it.
there is a good solid foundation of pattern, technique and freedom of design. I also highly value all the gauges that are provided, because I never have the yarn for the pattern, or vice versa. It takes a lot of guesswork and frustration out of sizing.
I have owned this book three times, because someone has always 'borrowed' it, and I never got it back! This last one doesn't leave my house so I don't have to buy another one! Now go! create! enjoy!

Editorial Review:

Offering charts and plans for making infant- through adult-sized projects, this unique book provides knitters with a complete resource of more than 350 patterns for caps, tams, scarves, vests, sweaters, mittens, gloves, and socks that are written for multiple gauges to accommodate all weights of yarn from bulky to fingering. Also included are the basics of pattern design and alteration to allow for the addition of different types of texture and color patterns or the modification of existing patterns to accommodate more gauges. Patterns are also accompanied by an assortment of ideas for edgings and finishes, further expanding design options.

Editorial Review:

Jane Brocket delights in domesticity. Lively, curious, and creative, she takes inspiration from her surroundings, from art, literature, and nature, and expresses her passion through the gentle arts of needlework, cooking, gardening, and homemaking—and now through her writing. In The Gentle Art of Domesticity Brocket celebrates everything that is, and can be, wonderful about home life.

This gorgeous and unusual book, full of whimsy, warmth, and a wealth of stunning photographs, helps us to see domesticity with new eyes. Whether she’s knitting a tea cozy or baking jam tarts, crocheting a blanket or sewing an apron, Brocket fills her home with beauty, color, and fun. She transforms day-to-day domesticity into a realm of possibilities, both practical and imaginative—and encourages us to do the same in our own lives.

Rather than categorize readers as quilters or embroiderers, bakers or gardeners, Brocket embraces the idea that they may be all of these, and more. The key to practicing any of the domestic arts, she says, is to recognize the value of homemaking, overlooked skills, and ordinary things. This book’s glorious synthesis of style, DIY projects, and philosophical musings inspires us not only to emulate Brocket’s handmade creations but also to share her enjoyment of the simple pleasures of home.

Disappointed 2 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

While the history of the apron was intresting, the photos were well done and text was well written, I was disappointed that all the patterns need to be enlarged 200%, 400%, 579%, etc. Who has a blueprint copy machine easily available that can do this type of copying??? I expected to read through the book, pick my fabric and get started! Poor planing on the writer's part.

Editorial Review:

A is for adorable and amazingly irresistible and incredibly attractive: who would have imagined that the apron, that charming and nostalgic symbol of domesticity, would become today’s must-have home accessory? But it most certainly is, as stitchers and crafters flock to these creative canvases as the perfect vehicle for showcasing fabulous fabric, simple embellishments, and novel ideas. These ingenious projects—from ultra-feminine and vintage chic to whimsical color-play—include waist and bib aprons, pinafores, smocks, cobblers, and even something for the pint-sized cook. All of the projects are photographed in a playful style. And templates, sewing basics, and quick and easy projects for sprucing up store-bought aprons and whipping up aprons from recycled materials are here too!

Best in Series 5 out of 5 stars.

I own all three of Sally Melville's Knitting Experience books and this is by far my favorite. There just isn't another book out there that I'm aware of with so many great designs that require only a knit stitch...not a purl to be seen! That's what makes it stand out to me. I've never quite understood why some people are so reluctant to make the jump to purling, but if you've taught knitting I'm sure you've run into a few. The other two books have plenty of Sally's ingenious designs, tips & humor, as well as XRX's very readable layout (definitely try an XRX book if you're new to reading knitting patterns!) and great photography, I just think this one is more of an accomplishment...a design/teaching challenge met and surpassed.
