If you want information as an artist intending to try encaustic painting
then this is a good book--it covers everything to get started painting with
encaustic. Also some information on the ancient Fayum encaustic portraits,
Jasper Johns use of encaustic (an interview with him) and examples of the encaustic
work of certain other contemporary artists using encaustic techniques and some
using other wax techniques not strictly encasutic

I am soooooooooo glad someone recommended this book to me. I learned more from this book than from the dozens of classes I have taken over the years. The author is not only talented but an awesome person. I emailed her for an opinion and she emailed me back immediately. THAT was impressive. I HIGHLY recommend this book to anyone who is interested in scrapbooking, ATCs, painting.....

Beware! This "book" is only 50 pages long. It should be classified as a "booklet" created by and for Golden products. The photos are so small it is very difficult to see what the author is trying to teach. I know Chris Cozen is a Golden Working Artist, but she really should indicate that Liquitex and other producers of art mediums and gels offer similar products, often at much lower prices. Do your research.

The photography and ideas are very good, but the 'book'should be twice as many pages, the photos twice as large and the author should do more illustrated step-by-step photos of what she is trying to teach. Someone got greedy on this one.

If you can only afford one good book on versatile mediums and gels, buy "Acrylic Revolution" by Nancy Reyner, another Golden Working Artist. Patty Brady's (another Golden WA) book is due out later this year, but IF I buy it, I will take a very critical look at the length. I wish I could have looked inside this book first.

I am a professional acrylic painter and teacher and am always looking for new ways to create in this amazing medium. This purchase was a disappointment.

Thank you for bringing these wonderful coloring books to Amazon.com! Year after year, at Minneapolis's Art a Whirl I look forward to finding Kendall Bohn's art studio because of the colorful and intellectual art he produces. Kendall is an artist who has not forgotten our children (and the children at heart) and their need for abstract, creative and fun art. Each coloring book is a flawless masterpiece which makes them a fantastic gift for cultivating imagination. At any age, anyone can color one of these beautiful pages to match any room and frame them for all to admire. I look forward to your continued releases!

This book is just wonderful for round and flat brush stroke designs. It is also very well written and illustrated. For a beginner it is just great to see results almost instantaneously achieved. A Great work of art!!

She has many techniques that Donna Dewberry does not cover in the books of hers that I own. Some beautiful strokes using other brushes. I really like the tole painting look that this book demonstrates.

When I decided that I wanted to start painting, I bought five "How To" books. This one is my favorite, hands down. The book is well organized, well written, and contains a lot of beautifully detailed photographs. The author has kept the text to a minimum, letting the photographs do much of the talking, which works far better for me than other books that have more emphasis on written instruction.

In only 72 pages, every topic is covered, and no question is left unanswered. It begins with a brief history of the medium, then moves on to cover color, paint types, brushes, painting surfaces, tools, and techniques, as well as galleries of different painting styles. There's even a section on experimental approaches, such as stenciling and inventive scraping. Rather than presenting a series of exercises (as many books do), this author encourages experimentation and discovering your own personal style, an approach that really inspired me to pick up a brush and get started.

Also worth mentioning is that every photograph and illustration is in color . . . really GOOD color. This may sound like a no-brainer, but a few of the other books I purchased contained a lot of black-and-white photos. Hey, you can't learn to paint in black and white!

Experienced artists may find the material here a bit too rudimentary, but for the true novice, like myself, this book is a winner. If you're looking for that ONE book to get you started, this is it!

I am an artist who paints in Acrylics and I teach others to do so. I am always looking for ideas and techniques to teach my students. Brenda Harris had a television painting show in the 80's/90's, but I never got to see it as it did not play in my area. I did meet Brenda at a painting convention and got to take some classes from her. She is a wonderful teacher and painter. I have bought most of her books and some of her videos and I use her methods of painting in my work. My students like it when I paint something from Brenda's books. She is one of the few artists left who actually encourages teachers to teach from her books. I like that about her, and will continue to purchase her books and videos because of this generosity. You will not be disappointed if you purchase any of Brenda's books or videos. She's a gracious "southern lady".
