Editorial Review:

Amazon Best of the Month, November 2008: The scrapbook has long been a popular and vital form of self-expression embraced by a cross-section of American society. "To read another person's scrapbook" observes Jessica Helfand in Scrapbooks: An American History, "is to acquire a body of knowledge about an entirely different time and place." Helfand--a prominent graphic designer, art critic, and author--has combined her considerable talents to create one of the most interesting and category-defying books on American culture this year. Through some 200 albums dating from the Victorian era through the present day--albums that Helfand personally curated and researched--Scrapbooks tells the story of ordinary and extraordinary lives, innovative visual ideas, and social change within the larger context of American history. The perfectly presented color photographs of album pages and schematic renderings draw readers right in. And, Helfand's detailed, yet evocative interpretations will keep them glued to the page. Scrapbooks is a special book that engages readers with a palpable sense of the material qualities of historic scrapbooks, and provides a stimulating presentation of the complex social and cultural worlds out of which they emerged. Like any first-rate scrapbook, Scrapbooks is a treasure-trove worth poring over for hours and hours. --Lauren Nemroff

The first book on the history of the American scrapbook. Discover untold stories in America's cultural history through nearly 200 fascinating scrapbooks.

Author Jessica Helfand Describes the Scrapbooks Project

Rich or poor, celebrity or civilian, men, women, and children of all ages kept scrapbooks. Some were ornate, with gilded covers and carefully composed pages of decoupage. Others were retrofitted from secondhand books, with chromolithographs glued sloppily on top of existing texts. Many consisted entirely of clippings, rigorously aligned and chronologically arranged, often around a central theme—pigeons, for instance, or movie stars or, not infrequently, obituaries. There were scrapbooks filled with babies, birds, and baseball statistics; scrapbooks about ice skating, dog breeding, and the intricacies of boy watching. Fragments of cloth from wedding gowns were included in bridal books, while new mothers included gentle locks from their baby’s first haircut. Debutantes saved news clippings, farmers saved weather reports, high school girls saved gum wrappers, and everyone, it seemed, saved greeting cards. Even soldiers kept scrapbooks, pasting in furlough requests, ration cards, and the tattered, beloved photos of their faraway sweethearts. Clumsily folded, haphazardly pasted, randomly annotated with fascinating afterthoughts, the material presence of these personal repositories offers a long-overlooked glimpse into the American spirit. Why did people feel compelled to save the things they did? What did they value, and question, and believe about themselves and the world around them? And how did the things they saved express what they themselves, for whatever reason, could not say in words?

Over time, the scrapbook came to mirror the changing pulse of American cultural life—a life of episodic moments, randomly reflected in a news clipping or a silhouetted photograph, a lock of baby hair or a Western Union telegram. As a genre unto themselves, scrapbooks represent a fascinating, yet virtually unexplored visual vernacular, a world of makeshift means and primitive methods, of gestural madness and unruly visions, of piety and poetry and a million private plagiarisms. As author, editor, photographer, curator, and inevitable protagonist, the scrapbook maker engaged in what seems today, in retrospect, a comparatively crude exercise in graphic design. Combining pictures, words, and a wealth of personal ephemera, the resulting works represent amateur yet stunningly authoritative examples of a particular strain of visual autobiography, a genre rich in emotional, pictorial, and sensory detail. --Jessica Helfand

Inspiration galore! 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

If you haven't seen this book already I think it is one of those Must-own-book because there is so much to look at that you'll never be finished with it! It's filled to the brim with many talented artist and it holds a big range of diverse visual journaling styles! There are collages, doodles, sketches, writing and photos on page after page with views inside the private Art Journals from people all over the world!

This book has +300 pages and almost no text - but very many (1000!) pages (though some are photos of the whole spread and those counts as two pages). You can read what the artist has written and journaled about on the pages and you understand that you are not alone in you angst and artistic fears!

It's an art book that probably will inspire anyone to do a little art journaling (but probably a lot). If you're experienced in the mixed media field you will totally want to keep this book as a reference guide and inspiration tool for different styles, artists and prompts. If you're new to Art Journals and collage I think you will be curious about starting after just a few minutes!

I'm glad I bought it and it will be taken down from my book shelf many many times in the future.

Editorial Review:

Over 1,000 journal pages presented in one beautiful full-color book

Journals offer their makers a safe place to dream, doodle, rant, and reinvent themselves. They offer viewers rich, visual inspiration. There is a fascination with these revealing and often beautiful pages of self-exploration and personal expression. Journals offer a tantalizing, voyeuristic view of an interior life.

This would be the first book to offer examples of over 1000 journal pages in one eye-catching, visual format, and would attract a wide swathe of artists who fully embrace or experiment with this medium.

Journaling has seeped into popular culture in a big way and this collection provides a wide array of ideas, techniques and themes to inspire and inform mixed media and journaling enthusiasts.

Awesome book for young artists! 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

I purchased this book for my 7-year-old last year--a girl who loves art and math equally well. It has been 8 months and she STILL pulls out this book every week or so to work on a picture...and the results are really beautiful. It's detailed enough that she feels accomplished with her work and clean enough that it's not overwhelming. I highly recommend it!

Too Cool and Great Price 5 out of 5 stars.

I bought this coloring book for my Grandaughter's 8th birthday. Not only were all the little girls coloring in it but the teenagers and some adults were as well. Everyone loved it.

Cool Designs 5 out of 5 stars.

I liked coloring these designs except it used up my magic markers too fast. Some of the areas were so large that my markers would run out before I could complete the area. For the most part, I thought this was an excellent coloring book and I would order it again.

Half & Half 3 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

At the time I colored this book(a few years ago) I found the designs appealing...some designs are very simple but because of their big size after coloring them you might be surprized by their final impact...some designs are very complex and required a similar coloring approach...because of its combined design structures, simple and complex,I believe this book will satisfy the first timers in coloring.

I think this book is just okay. 2 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

First the pros: Becky Fleck does beautiful work, her sketches are detailed and the scrapbook pages pictured are wonderful. She uses a lot of paint in her designs, which I don't. The spiral binding makes it really simple to open it to the page you like and keep it there! There are cards in the back of all the sketches with an example on the back of the card. The idea is that you can carry the cards more easily than the book to a crop or to the craft store to buy supplies. Awesome, right!?

The cons: The biggest con for me is that Becky Fleck mostly does one page designs. Most scrappers I know, myself included, tend to work on two page spreads. So this is a major disappointment for me. And I know the one page sketches can be carried over into a 2 page spread, but I'd rather just see the whole double page spread all sketched out for me. That's why I buy these books! Fleck shows examples of 8 1/2 x 11" layouts with single pages, double pages and pages that have the layout turned to be 11" x 8.5". But I would not have bought it if I'd known it was 80% single page sketches.

But the bright side is that on Amazon.com, the list price is an affordable $14.99 (unlike me, who paid full list price of $24.99 to get it NOW). So it isn't much of a budget breaker. But for me, I wish I'd have spent the money on scrapbooking supplies.

Editorial Review:

Scrapbook Page Maps takes the guesswork out of where to begin by giving plenty of design ideas for their scrapbook layouts!

By referring to the sketches in the book, readers can select photos, papers and embellishments and then bring the page together quickly and easily. Helpful resource information such as a supply list and photo sizes are included on each card, along with page information cross-referencing the sketch back to the book. Scrapbook Page Maps is the essential book for beginning scrapbookers as well as those short on time.

And you get more than just an inspiring, design-filled idea book!
Also included is a deck of laminated cards that includes a thumbnail of many of the sketches in the book along with corresponding finished layouts.

Fabulous coloring book! 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

I am an adult that loves to color and these Roger Burrows books are great. I find they work best with colored pencils in that the designs are very intricate, but fine tip markers work fine as well if you don't mind bleed through (the paper is fairly thin). Very good, cheap, relaxing therapy! Can't miss--these would be fine for older children as well that are very attentive to detail.

Definately keeps you busy!!! lol 5 out of 5 stars.

I recieved this book, along with books 2-5 also, for christmas. My mom ordered them out of a magazine together though. but they are the same books. Anyway, I love these things!! I am 14, and they still Keep me busy. Also, I had several teachers who had us do these at school.....not exactly sure why, but they did. Anyway, I think older kids, maybe 3rd or 4th grade and up will like these better than any old coloring book. I even got my sister whos 24, doing one of these last night! lol so overall, its perfect! =)

Still picking up the paper 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

I am still finding paper airplanes in various places throughout my house 3 months after giving this to my son.

Great paper plane book for everyone! 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

I still have my copy of this book I got back in 96 or 97 when I was young and now my nephew is 5 so hes starting to enjoy these sorts of hobbys. I Highly reccomend this book to anyone who wants to learn some of the basics of flight and how to properly build and launch paper airplanes (yes there is technique involved).

When I got this book it was packed with very cool designs for the planes that you just tear out of the book. Each plane comes with a number system printed on the planes as well as very detailed folding instructions. Each pattern comes with about 4 or 5 copies of each airplane. Some are better than others and some I could never get to work right (I was kinda young). If you want a really fun book pick this one up asap, you won't regret it!

If you do buy this book be sure to color copy each of the designs to save on your pc as backups. Im 22 now and im kicking myself for not doing just that for my now 5 year old nephew.

Editorial Review:

Drawing the traditional circular designs known as mandalas is a meditative practice, a healing exercise in times of crisis, and a pleasurable act of creativity. As a symbol of the Self, the mandala provides a connection to our innermost being. The forty-eight drawings presented here for coloring include designs inspired by forms of nature, Native American and Tibetan sand paintings, Hindu yantras, Turkish mosaics, the illuminations of Hildegarde of Bingen, and the art of M.C. Escher. These mandalas are organized according to the Great Round of Mandala, a scheme of twelve archetypal stages that represents a complete cycle of personal growth. Thus, to do the coloring book from start to finish will carry the reader through a balanced experience of change, guided by the accompanying text.
