Editorial Review:

More than half of the projects in this book can be completed in less than 8 hours

In an age of mass-produced, look-alike merchandise, there’s no greater pleasure than to receive—or to give—a handmade gift. To make gifts for family and friends testifies to your esteem for them and to your loving dedication of precious energy and time.

And there’s the rub. These days, few people have time to create elaborate hand-fashioned gifts. Understanding the demands on contemporary crafters’ schedules—but understanding, too, their wish to express their love and care in this very personal way—led Joelle Hoverson to write Last-Minute Knitted Gifts. Now, in the follow-up to that extremely successful 2004 volume—with nearly 80,000 copies in print—Hoverson and photographer Anna Williams present Last-Minute Patchwork + Quilted Gifts.

The book—designed for use by both first-time and longtime quilters—features 30 patchwork and quilted projects organized according to the amount of time it takes to complete them: less than 2 hours, 2 to 4 hours, 4 to 8 hours, 8 to 12 hours, and 12 hours or more. The gifts are inspired by Amish, Appalachian, and Japanese quilting traditions, among others, and range from easy pillowcases and covered scrapbooks to simplified (but heirloom-worthy) log cabin and crazy quilts. Hoverson also shares an overview of her approach to color as well as the tools and techniques she used to complete the projects in the book.

Good sewing exercises 4 out of 5 stars.
7 of 7 people found this review helpful.

This book has great exercises for kids to hone their sewing awareness and machine skills. One was visually finding quarter inch thicknesses. I thought the projects in the first book were more fun, but it is definitely on a child's level which is hard to find for beginning sewing. The illustrations are colorful and definitely target kids.

I Finishd 2 Quilts In A Week 4 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

I love this type of quilt, and this method is just fun to do. If you have a lot of large print material, this is a great way to make a great quilt. The instructions were very good, just learn to keep all your little pieces together.

A reinvention of quilting altogether! 4 out of 5 stars.

Once I picked up this book in a fabric shop and leafed through it, I could not get the idea out of my head. So I HAD to buy the book!Rosenthal makes her special brand of kaleidoscopic quilting look very simple. With clear guidelines and stunning pictures of completed quilts for inspiration, you'll be ready to start!

Presently I am searching for a good fabric to use for this project--be warned that not every fabric can work. The selection of colors and prints is key.

The only thing that annoyed me about this book is that some instructions are left out, most notably the formation of a hollow block cube. However, I understand that the sequel (One-Block Wonders Encore) includes these directions.

I'd recommend this type of quilting to people who like to play with colors and patterns. It's very untraditional, so I can understand why it's not for everyone. As for me, I'm inspired! I'll never see fabric the same way again!

Editorial Review:

• Two super-speedy, surefire projects
• Easy random cutting! No planning, no fussy cuts, no mess-ups

Simple steps to dazzle friends and impress people: 1. Buy One-Block Wonders. 2. Follow precise directions to choose a large-scale print, calculate yardage, and cut and piece these drop-dead gorgeous quilts. 3. Graciously accept cheers and accolades from all. Big pieces and clever shortcut methods make these quilts go together fast so that quilters can spend more time with their admiring public.

I first saw this book in a bookstore on my lunch break. I am an avid crafter and love to sew. I had recently decided to make quits for all of my nieces and my nephew, I have 5 of them, for Christmas. Problem was, I had never actually made a quit before. This book is so informative, I could hardly believe how much I learned. I am so glad I got this book' it is going to get me to through the summer all the way to Christmas and beyond!

stack n wahck ipedia 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

THIS IS A GREAT BOOK WELL WRITTEN, EASY TO FOLLOW. LOTS OF ORIG IDEAS. THE ONLY THING I WISH THE AUTHOR WOULD OF DONE WAS TO SHOW A SMALL PHOTO OF THE FABRICS USED TO MAKE THE QUILT THE ONLY WAY YOU GET AN IDEA OF THE FABRIC IS IF SHE USED IT IN THE EDGE OR SASHING. A NICE EVEN SMALL PHOTO OF WHAT SHE STARTED WITH WOULD OF MADE IT EASIER FOR THE BEGINNER QUILTER TO BE ABLE TO JUDGE A PIECE OF FABRIC. THE BOOK IS GREAT AND I HOPE SHE WRITES MORE. THANKS

Great quilting book 5 out of 5 stars.

Editorial Review:

Kaleidoscope quilts are one of the show-off pieces of a quilter's repertoire. They're judged not only on how perfectly the pieces are sewn to a point in the middle, but also on the cutting: if each piece isn't cut from exactly the same part of the pattern on the fabric, the effect is spoiled. The traditional way of making kaleidoscope blocks involves a special window template, much exaggerated care in cutting--and too often, much wasted fabric. Reynolds's revolutionary method of measuring and marking pattern repeats on the fabric, then cutting all the pieces for the kaleidoscope at once, is more precise, much less time consuming and wasteful, and keeps quilters from being slaves to the cutting process. Reynolds leads the reader smoothly through the process for half-square triangles, 45- and 60-degree triangles, and 45- and 60-degree diamonds. Magic Stack-n-Whack Quilts is an essential addition to the library of any quilter who's interested in the endless design possibilities in kaleidoscopes, stars, pinwheels, and hexagons. --Barrie Trinkle

subtitle a bit misleading 3 out of 5 stars.
20 of 20 people found this review helpful.

This book has a number of good designs, but I think it's misleading to call it Jelly Roll friendly. Very few of the designs would make efficient use of the number of strips contained in a Jelly Roll -- you'd either need more strips, or additional fabric (FQs or something) or you'll end up with strips left over. A much better book, with designs which use the Jelly Rolls more efficiently, is Jelly Roll Quilts by the Lintotts, mother and daughter. I can't remember the mother's first name, but the daughter's is Nicky. It's available here on Amazon.

Have fun with Jelly Rolls 5 out of 5 stars.
15 of 15 people found this review helpful.

Have you seen those "Jelly Rolls" in your favorite fabric store? Ever wondered what on earth you could do with them? Ms. Martin gives you a whole book on just that subject---10 quilts and 3 other projects --- a tote bag, a pillow and a Table Runner. With the 13 projects, you will be busy for a long time.

OK, so you don't have Jelly Rolls and you don't want to spend the money on getting one. Grab some of your favorite fabric and make your own 2 ½ inch strips. The first 17 pages provide you with basic techniques on how to make your own strips, the tools you will need and how to appliqué and quilt. There is even a suggestion for a quick and easy "light box".

Each project shows a photo of the finished item and a paragraph about the item. It gives the finished size and finished block size. A materials and cutting list is provided as well as how to put the blocks together. There are LOTS of graphics so you can be sure you are following the written directions correctly.

The final pages provide the templates needed for one of the projects as well as several paragraphs about the author. All in all, this is a wonderful book that will have you sewing far into the night.

A wonderful source of inspiration 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

If you're looking for a book that will give you hours of inspiration (and the urge to go out and buy more fabric), this is a great option for your library. Bold fabrics combine with bold (yet simple) designs to create stunning quilts that are remarkably easy to make.

I understand the point of view of the people who gave this book negative reviews. There are times when you want to invest the time and energy to make an intricate work of art for a special occasion or special recipient. But for some of us there are times when you want to whip up something artful, eye-catching, and super quick. This is the book for those projects.

When you begin gathering fabric to make one of these quilts, you may find yourself stymied by all your choices. Don't be surprised if you can't visualize how your fabrics will go together and you end up stuck. If that happens to you, I recommend you simply make one -- a practice quilt, if you will -- just to see how it works. Making my first quilt taught me a lot about how to choose colors and textures, which work together differently in Pizzazz quilts than in more traditional patterns. Several of the clerks at my local quilt shop have said the same thing. Making one will teach you more than 20 hours of studying the photos in the book. But be forewarned: Once you make one, you'll suddenly have ideas for six more!

Editorial Review:

• Sixteen different layouts
• Great for classes

Combine a special fabric with a few easy nine-patches to create a captivating quilt, sassy or sophisticated, country cozy or city chic, plain or fancy. Sixteen layouts make it hard to choose a favorite—but remember, nine-patches are the potato chips of quiltmaking...no one can make just one.
