Not bad, not great 3 out of 5 stars.

The recipes for making herbal pillows are good. However, the book only gives you one instruction for sewing a pillow. I guess I was hoping for more than one style.

Making Herbal Dream Pillows 5 out of 5 stars.

Wonderful book! Jim Long has done alot of research into the origins of the pillows. Very informative compact book.

beautiful 4 out of 5 stars.

I give this book four stars because of the beautiful artwork and wonderful recipes. Very beautifully illustrated and simple to follow. However I have one complaint: most of the herbal recipes call for mugwort which I cannot find. I haven't yet tried any of the recipes in here because of that but in my opnion it is very original and definitely a keeper.

Dreamland 5 out of 5 stars.

"Making Herbal Dream Pillows : Secret Blends for Pleasant Dreams" is a perfect gift choice for that someone special. If you or a friend like herbal fragrances, arranging flowers or just potpourri in general this has many possibilities and suggestions. Thoughtful in its approach this is very well conceived. Highly recommended.

Editorial Review:

A lavish book offering step-by-step instructions for creating herbal-scented pillows for custom-made dreams.

A Good Book to Start With 4 out of 5 stars.
11 of 11 people found this review helpful.

Overall, as a beginner, I enjoyed this book and appreciated a lot of his explanations and directions. I found his explanation of the math/calculation portion a little confusing, however. His step by step soap making was nice. I wish he would have explained different methods of coloring soap a little more. I am interested in making herbal soaps as natural as possible, and this book has helped me to get a basic idea. He goes over melt and pour in a brief overview, and I was glad he didn't spend too much time on it. He teaches the cold process method. I plan to find books that teach hot process next. This book is recommended for beginners.

Editorial Review:

Consumers are no longer satisfied with the industrial types of soap available at the grocery store. They want specialty soaps with just the right scent, emollients, and eye-appeal. They want to pamper themselves and their loved ones with personal soaps made to suit their own tastes and preferences. Now they can get that perfect custom-made soap by making it themselves.

Drawing on years of experimentation and fine-tuning, author and chemist Dr. Robert McDaniel has developed simple instructions and recipes for making a wide variety of cold process soaps as well as melt and pour and rebatched soaps for the beginner. McDaniel instructs on how to work with fragrances, skin treatments, colors, and shapes, and discusses the aromatherapy benefits associated with many essential oils.

-25 recipes for cold process soapmaking.
-Easy to follow step-by-step instructions.
-Time-saving melt and pour and rebatch techniques.

sure are a lot of soap books 1 out of 5 stars.
6 of 7 people found this review helpful.

This is just another book that was written to cash in on the current DIY craze in toiletries and bath products. The author is not much of a soapmaker, and I ended up selling my copy to a used bookstore within 6 months of ordering it. The book is beautiful to behold, while being a pain to actually use due to the format and size, but is essentially useless next to the few books that actually impart info which empowers crafters to make ingredients decisions because they've learned something. Read Cavitch if you want to learn something.

This is just another abbreviated Martha-esque book.

Editorial Review:

With this book, it is easy to create soothing suds and a wide variety of perfumes, colognes and splashes that moisturize, revitalize and aromatize skin and hair.

Following the simple step-by-step directions, readers can make all the body products of their dreams, from Buttermilk Oatmeal Soap and Tangerine Cocoa Bar to Lemon Lavender Shampoo. Each recipe also points out how readers can improvise and create their own special soaps and scents.

A special section details the techniques of the world's most famous fragrance producers and traces perfume history. The book includes a resource directory, safety hints and ways to make your soaps more earth-friendly.

Great raku information 5 out of 5 stars.
12 of 12 people found this review helpful.

This is his second book I bought. I thought that this book would repeat a lot of the information in the first book, but to my surprise the book had a lot of new information and new pictures. This book is worth taking an evening to read it cover to cover. This is a great edition to his first book.

Editorial Review:

The Japanese art of Raku, a challenging pottery firing

technique that uses fire and smoke to form unique patterns on

the glaze, has long been a favorite of ceramists. This

comprehensive overview of Raku explores the fascinating art

and its history in full detail.

Inside, readers will find information on the clay types used in

Raku and the subsequent firing process, as well as the glazes,

techniques and reproduction processes common to the art.

This new edition has been completely re-written and updated

with over 200 all new, full-color photos of beautiful Raku

pottery. It also contains an in-depth history of the origins of

Raku, its development over the last 20 years, and the changes

in techniques and perception of the art during that time.

Editorial Review:

With a brief but compelling history of the candle, Catherine Bardey introduces us to a once-essential source of light that has lost none of its charm through the ages. We may no longer depend on candles for everyday illumination, but we still rely on them to create atmosphere, evoke a mood, or enhance our decor. Excellent descriptions of the various materials and techniques (molding, dipping, pouring, rolling, decorating) and extensive recipes for many types of candles ensure that even the novice can create beautiful designs.

The book's second half is devoted to potpourri, which is given the same careful treatment. A short introduction to scent in history--touching concisely upon perfumes, incense, and aromatherapy--leads into explanations of several methods for creating potpourri (fixatives, drying, storing, displaying). This is followed by specific recipes for, among others, spring, summer, and autumn medleys; energy-boosting, relaxing, and romantic scents; and themed potpourris for Mother's Day, Valentine's Day, Thanksgiving, and Christmas. A final section charts botanicals to grow for potpourri making, explores essential oils and their useful properties, and offers additional candle-decorating ideas. Pretty photos enhance the presentation. --Amy Handy

Excellent 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Straigth-forward. This author doesn't spend too many words to get to the point, which I like. It gives you basic instructions and ingredient proportions for any potpourri you'd like to make using any materials, by both methods: dry and moist potpourris. In addition, it includes several potpourri recipes, which you can follow or alter, just like cooking recipes. The last section includes several projects, which, although not real fancy-looking, are very good as basic ideas from where you can take-off. I like this book because, as compared to others, it makes this potpourri-making science/art un-complicated.

Editorial Review:

This book includes plenty of recipes for sweet-smelling mixtures, and projects for making delicate sachets, sumptuous bags and scented cushions of velvet and organza, you can create aromatic gifts your yourself and your friends.

Don't try THIS at home 2 out of 5 stars.
44 of 46 people found this review helpful.

While the potpourri and cologne recipes may be fine, I strongly advise against using his soap recipes, as the high percentage of lye isn't safe. If you wish to make soap, please invest in another, safer book--any of the following three have wonderful recipes that don't run the risk of destroying your skin: The Natural Soap Book, The Soapmaker's Companion or The Handmade Soap Book.

Found the book interesting. 4 out of 5 stars.

This book has great directions for making soaps and colognes. There are 102 recipes. Pictures are in black and white but still very detailed. This would be a good book to use with scouts 12 and up. I think anyone who is into making soaps and colognes will like this book.
