I received this book quicker than I expected and was extremely happy with the condition of this used book. It was almost like new. The seller certainly ensured that I received exactly what I wanted as quickly as possible. Just excellent customer service to this international buyer.

I really like this book. It covers many fabrics, including many I've been hesitant to use or nervous about when I did. I recently bought a new electronic sewing machine and this has been a real help. The recommendations about the right foot to use and when were a boon in selecting which accessories to buy. I also really like the sections in the back. There are illustrations on different seams, closures, and hems, plus information on stain removal, linings, and sources. Great!

Excellent source of info for all levels of rug hooking. 5 out of 5 stars.

This "Bible" is a wonderful resource for the basics, as well as advanced hooking and dyeing techniques. As a beginner, I was surprised to learn of all the variations in design, composition, and color shading possible. It covers both primitive technique and precision hooking in great detail. This is the one to buy. I'd also bought "Purely Primitive", and it was just that--the very, very basics. I learned alot more from "The Rug Hooker's Bible".

Editorial Review:

Using Jane Olson's 30 years of articles from her "Rugger's Roundtable" as a base, "The Rug Hooker's Bible", brought to you by "Rug Hooking" magazine, is an easy-to-use standard text for beginner and teacher alike. Decades of experience is edited, expanded, and updated so students can easily study the very best techniques of hooking a rug. See how the same designs can be hooked in as many as four different ways - fine shaded, primitive outline and fill, dip dyed, and with artistic scraps. This book is an indispensable tool for all levels of hookers.

Editorial Review:

This work includes a book and a DVD. It helps readers to uncover the history and background of traditional proddy. This book: offers techniques for different prodding methods; describes other forms of three-dimensional rug hooking; offers step-by-step instructions and templates to create realistic-shaped proddy flower petals; and, includes a special table-runner project, full-size pattern insert, and instructional DVD. Three-dimensional rug hooking is gaining momentum in the fibre arts field as a way of accessorising traditional work. Gene Shepherd gives a comprehensive look at the origin of prodded rugs and gives step-by-step instructions to achieve the look of realistic flowers and leaves. Beginning with the background of traditional prodded hooking and methods to do it, he covers realistic-shaped proddy flowers, moulded hooking, decorative knots, and backgrounds that appear three-dimensional. It helps to learn how to use pancake-dyed wools and alternate loop (beaded) techniques.

WOW!! 4 out of 5 stars.
19 of 19 people found this review helpful.

I love the concept and it looks as if it will be great fun. The only disappoinment is the difficulty the correct weight canvas. And I live in a large city so it shouldn't be that difficult. To obtain the canvas on line will be expensive.

I have been in communication with the author to see if I could do a few things differently and to ask why she recommends certain processes. She was super quick to respond and VERY helpful. She sounds delightful and I wish she were holding a class in my area. The book is full of good ideas and I am looking forward to having some fun with it once the holidays are over. I definitely recommend it if you enjoy crafting and/or quilting, particularly that which is unique and useful at the same time.

A VERY USEFUL AND INFORMATIVE WORK. 5 out of 5 stars.
12 of 13 people found this review helpful.

First, I want to be clear. I have never made a braided rug, and in all likelihood, never will. I purchased this book because, while not interested in making a braided rug myself, I do collect (and at times, sell) this form of American Folk Art. To do this well requires a acertain amount of knowledge and I did receive just what I wanted from this particular book, i.e. knowledge that I most certainly needed. The book I am reviewing here is the revised edition, 2006. The authors have given us a great overview of this craft, starting with a nicely done history. They include techniques, materials, tools and patterns. For the crafter, the directions, while a bit intimidating, are never-the-less quite precise and include color schemes, measurements and again, variations of techniques. The photographs of the various patterns are wonderful (in my case I found this to be most useful), very clear, very precise. I appreciate the author's insistence on prefection as this is one of those things I am interested in and need to know it, i.e. high quality, when I see it. I also appreciated the section on care and cleaning of these wonderful items. One page (124) gives a very nice list of the qualities of a well made rug. Again, this was most useful for my situation. I cannot see how you could go wrong with this one. After reading the instructions I feel, If I were so inclined, that even I, with no craft talent for working in fabrics what so ever, could actually creat one of these things. Overall, highly recommend this one.

Editorial Review:

The classic guide to an enduring American craft gets an eye-catching revision. Fantastic to look at and easy to follow, this expanded version of The Braided Rug Book will win a new audience and also appeal to those who own the previous edition. It features thoroughly updated information, brand-new gallery images, two additional rug techniques to try, and a comprehensive primer on planning a project. Beginners will learn about wools and other materials, how to care for finished rugs, and how to recognize a quality rug. Plus, there are several new color plans and entirely new directions and illustrations for building a rug-braiding stand, complete with a finished photo.

Editorial Review:

Murray Eiland's Oriental Rugs has long been the standard introduction to oriental rugs. The authors have extended the range of the book by incorporating new material on Chinese and Indian rugs, and the text has been completely revised. The plates of all the illustrations have been remade, and many of the rugs shown are new to this edition. The book's focus is the nineteenth- and twentieth-century weaving of the Middle and Far East. This is introduced by a brief history of carpets, followed by a discussion of weaving techniques, dyes, and design. Traditional practices are described, along with modern innovations, such as computer-aided design. The use of synthetic dyes and the recent revival of natural dyes are given a balanced appraisal. The importance and methodology of technical analysis is firmly emphasized. The endmatter includes extensive notes, a bibliography, and an index. The book includes more than 330 color illustrations, the majority of them new to this edition. They show classic pieces along with others that are more likely to be available to readers. Where possible, the captions include a structural analysis.

The Carpentry book that I recommend owning first.. 5 out of 5 stars.
45 of 45 people found this review helpful.

"Carpentry" by Larry Haun, is the Number 1 book that I recommend owning first when beginning carpenters, homeowners, and do-it-yourselfers ask me about learning different aspects of this trade. I also tell these folks that this book, in particular, is well written, easy to understand, and filled with high-quality color photographs and drawings, that help make clear what this Master Carpenter is teaching on the subject of basic carpentry.
In addition to the above, I'm asked this question many times as my crew and I frame or remodel homes in our state of Minnesota: "What other books do you recommend buying to help us learn more about homebuilding and fixing-up our home?" I tell these folks that they can be assured of finding additional high-quality, informative books from the publishers at Taunton Press, and Fine Homebuilding.
I tell the carpenters that ask me the same question to check out Larry Haun's book titled, "The Very Efficient Carpenter," also published by Taunton Press, as their next step in becoming more efficient as working carpenters.

Editorial Review:

A longtime teacher of carpentry with nearly 50 years of experience as a production framer, Larry Haun is considered to be one of the masters of his trade. His expertise in building accurately, efficiently, and safely makes him the perfect writer for this book on the fundamentals of carpentry. In straightforward prose, Haun shares his expert advice on a number of topics, including the basics of using hand and power tools, how to read plans and order building materials, how to understand and choose the proper grade of materials, and a rundown on the steps to building an entire house from the ground up. Haun's love of wood and woodworking comes through clearly in this well-illustrated, diagrammed, thoroughly indexed, and comprehensive guide to basic carpentry. --Mark A. Hetts
