The Best of Sewing Machine Fun For Kids 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

I purchased this book for my 9 year old grandaughter. What a wonderful introduction to sewing. First and formost, it is fun, visually attractive, in a easy to use spiral format on durable stock. It begins with some nice graphics and games that involve learning the parts of the sewing machine, moves on to some FUN drills that teach little hands how to control sewing lines, curves, points and so on. It ends with some very basic projects that kids can complete on their own giving them a real sense of acomplishment. This is a must have for children learning to sew.

Editorial Review:

Offering a delightful introduction to the world of sewing for children ages seven and older, The Best of Sewing Machine Fun for Kids offers clear, colorful directions to help kids have fun as they develop skills that will last a lifetime. Thirteen kid-friendly projects easily teach children how to sew. As kids work their way through the book, each project builds on skills they have already learned. Easy-to-follow instructions and safety precautions start with sewing basics, allowing children to learn at their own pace.

THIS IS A MUST HAVE FOR PEOPLE WHO ARE NEW TO SEWING! 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 3 people found this review helpful.

I LOVE THIS BOOK!! I am new to sewing & knew nothing about using a sewing machine (never used one). I bought a sewing machine about 3 weeks ago & followed the manuel. It never told me that I had to thread the top & use a bobbin to make the machine thread through the fabric. It took me forever to figure this out. I know it sounds stupid, but I had no idea. I asked many people and no one could really explain as to how these two threads worked to make a stitch but this book does page 27!! I wish I would have bought this book before I bought my machine. I got this book yesterday and have already read to CH 3. The book has great illustrations, gives detailed info on how things work, and is really funny! This is a must have book for any beginner sewer or someone wanting to refresh their memory. It comes with 10 paper patterns & other patterns you can follow from the book! I can't wait to try out a pattern this weekend! You won't be disappointed with this book! I picked this book from the reviews it got & I am sooo glad I did!

Grandson loved 5 out of 5 stars.

Our grandson has been facinated with my sewing machine so I bought this book. He made himself a loose pair of "pirate" pants his first try, after doing all the exercises in the book. I would highly recommend it.

Great Beginning Book 5 out of 5 stars.

I have two beginner sewer's. One that is 12 and the other is 9. The oldest completed the project in a few hours and enjoyed every minute. The 9 year old had quite a bit of difficulty and did not complete the project. We will keep practicing. I ran off paper copies for them to practice their sewing. So don't use the original templates. You will need lots of trial pages. Even my husband gave it a go. Ü

I would recommend this to anyone with a child who wants to learn to sew.

Good For kids.... 3 out of 5 stars.

I bought this book because I was first learning how to sew...not knowing that this book is for kids. I guess I didn't read the age group. Oh well... It's a good book for little kids but come on now.. not for adults.

Fun, Hip, Cool Book....but not for younger teens & pre-teens 3 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

I got this book this summer for my daughter, age 12, and her friend. Both girls are crafty, creative (they take art classes together), and have used a sewing machine independently. My daughter's friend even makes tailored clothes for herself! I thought the book would give them some fun & funky ideas. They did enjoy paging through it and both did manage to find a pattern to make. But I'm not sure they'll come back to this much because they felt the styles were too skimpy for them. Neither one is more modest than an average 12 year old, but they still didn't feel comfortable wearing most of the shirts out of the house. They were really amazed by the whole chapter of tube tops. (They asked me "Who would wear these things?")

Too bad...These girls are a perfect market for something like this. I guess I'll have to keep looking.

Editorial Review:

Editorial Review:

Sewing is back! Young, crafty women are discovering the fun and creativity of working with fabric, needle, and thread to create simple, colorful skirts, suitable for showing off as wearable art. Sew What! Skirts assumes no prior sewing experience (and no home ec. class or mother with sewing skills!), and doesn’t get bogged down with overly complicated instructions or patterns.

Author Francesca DenHartog, a fabric fanatic and sewing instructor, has stripped skirts down to the basics: 15 styles, ranging from an A-line to a circle, wraparound, gored panel, tiered “hippie,” layered, and more. All it takes to get started is basic body measurements (no need to go out and buy an expensive pattern), a machine, great fabric, fun embellishments, and a few sewing fundamentals.

With a creative can-do attitude, playful photographs, and super-simple step-by-step instructions, Sew What! Skirts will connect a whole new generation with the craft of making clothing that expresses your own unique look and personality. It’s all about the fabric, as DenHartog demonstrates with the colorful array of patterns and motifs featured throughout.

Whimsical, colorful, and easy, the designs in this book are sure to unleash the creative spirit of every budding seamstress.

Just plain amazing !! 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

First let me say that I am a simple quiltmaker. But I am a fantastic dreamer! This author has taken all of my dreams and made them come true. I cannot believe the things she does with the most common of fabrics. She sews designs and stuffs them with batting, then creates a wonderful picture with them. She pleats and ruches, too. Welting, cording, smocking, and tucking, are only a few of the lessons in her repertoire. The best way I know to describe her work is to say it's extremely varied in all areas of manipulation and is unlimited in its use. Clothing and quilts become things of great beauty when created using her methods. I recommend this book for all those who are the least bit interested in working with fabric. There are no brightly colored pictures, however. They are just not necessary here.

Editorial Review:

Those who knit, crochet, or embroider have long had sources to which to turn for in-depth instructions on specific stitches and stitch combinations. Now there is such a reference for the sewer--an encyclopedic approach to gathering, shirring, ruffling, tucking, pleating, and quilting and their myriad variations. Filled with hundreds of diagrams and crisp black-and-white photos, this volume explains in detail how to achieve a tremendous range of three-dimensional fabric effects. This is not a book of particular projects; this is a book of instruction and inspiration for anyone who has ever wielded needle and thread. --Amy Handy
