Editorial Review:

It’s the natural inconsistencies—the accidental differences between one finished piece and another—that make hand-printed fabrics, papers, furniture, and works of art so interesting. The quirks are what show the maker’s intimate involvement in the process, and it’s that unique quality that first attracted textile designer and illustrator Lena Corwin to hand-printing.

Even though decorative prints are more in vogue than ever, there was until now no up-to-date hand-printing guide—no single source explaining the tools and materials that are used today, or reflecting a contemporary aesthetic. Corwin has given us that guide.

Using step-by-step instructions and up-close photos, Corwin teaches crafters everything they need to know to master stamping, stenciling, and screen printing, from making their own printing devices to trouble-shooting when plans go awry. Her inimitable collection of projects ranges from stamped stationery and simple-to-sew pouches, to stenciled tote bags and furniture, to screen-printed bed linens and upholstery fabric. There’s even a silk-screened dog bed. The author has created original artwork for each project (full-size patterns are included in an envelope at the back of the book), so that every crafter can achieve the same beautiful results. Or maybe not quite the same. Remember: It’s the subtle differences that make hand-printing so special and alluring.

Historical and not useful 3 out of 5 stars.
6 of 9 people found this review helpful.

If you are a craftperson, do not buy this book, though pictoral, it is more historical and you need a magnifying glass to see some of the stencils.

Useful for engraving 4 out of 5 stars.
4 of 6 people found this review helpful.

I use these stencils as layouts for gun engraving. While many designs are too small and lack enough detail to be able to reproduce (about 30%) most are of good quality and detail. It's a great value for the price and I strongly recommend it as an indispensible aid for all engravers, wood carvers, and stencil makers.

Great Resource for Designers 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

This book is chock full of great Victorian design. It has cartouches (ornamental borders), patterns, single filligree elements, and the best part is that they are all royalty free. You will need to scan the elements and clean them up a bit, but this book is a fantastic resource for the "flourish" trend that is going on in graphic design right now.

Highly recommended.

Editorial Review:

Masterfully executed designs in reproductions of two rare catalogs: ornamental borders, corners and frames with intricate floral and foliated patterns, architectural ornaments and design elements, religious symbols and figures, animals, mosaics, landscapes, much more. Invaluable to artists and craftspeople working with textiles, wallpaper and other decorative items.

Beautiful artwork, beautiful reproductions 3 out of 5 stars.
10 of 10 people found this review helpful.

I thought the artwork in this book was stunning, and the reproduction quality and colors were lovely. I did have one major problem with the book, two of the main designs on the cover (topmost horizontal design and the center horizontal design) are NOT IN THE BOOK! These are two of the main patterns I planned to use from the book, and now if I want to, I need to get them from the cover, where they are covered by text. I found this to be unacceptable! Please keep this fact in mind if the cover is what won you over.

Best of Verneuil 5 out of 5 stars.
7 of 9 people found this review helpful.

This book exceeded my hopes. It had many more images in full color than I expected for such a cheap book. I have seen other books by Verneuil and they were half as nice and mostly black and white. I think anyone into decorating, drawing, and painting will like this book. It will inspire you to create art nouveau lines and flowers on your own work.

Editorial Review:

Magnificent collection of floral patterns and stencil designs, created by one of the movement’s finest artists, includes 120 images of graceful garden flowers—foxglove, hollyhocks, columbine, lilies, among others, and 39 stencil designs of blossoming trees, reeds, mushrooms, oak leaves, peacocks, and more. Classic, copyright-free motifs will add a note of elegance to fabrics, stained glass, wallpaper, and a host of other art and craft projects.

Editorial Review:

"More street artists are turning to stencil art's speed, efficiency, and neatness as a means of expression. All it takes is a piece of cardboard, an X-Acto knife, and a can of spray paint to pose an idea or tell a story with the potential to change the gait of pedestrians and make them stop and think."-San Francisco Weekly

Without a doubt, stencils are the fastest, easiest, and cheapest method for painting an image on a wall, a sidewalk, or practically anywhere. Stencil Nation focuses on the unexpected mix of this lively, accessible medium-from famous artists including Banksy to international street stencils and gallery shows-to reveal engaging aspects of an intentionally secretive creative community.

With dynamically illustrated perspectives from the niches of the art form, female artists, documentarians, and the growing online community of the international scene are featured in this fresh collection of photographs and essays curated by StencilArchive.org's founder, Russell Howze. New artists, often utilizing stencil art in unconventional ways, are also featured.

Stencil Nation also represents the art of lesser-known urban scenes, including Poland, Romania, and Israel. Additionally, Stencil Nation builds upon previous published works to give the most extensive and up-to-date history of stencil art, as well as how-to tips from the artists themselves.

Russell Howze is the curator of StencilArchive.org. He lives in San Francisco.

Chinese Symbols Stencils 4 out of 5 stars.

This collection is a good size and works well. I'd like to see more words/phrases available as the number was less than I expected. However, it's a nice starter collection and I'll enjoy using the book.

not worth the listed price 2 out of 5 stars.

I was dispointed with this product because I expecting more for what I paid for. When it was all and said and done. I paid like 8-9 dollars for seven cheaply made - chinese stencils. They served their purpose , but should have been a lot cheaper because of lack of quality.

Fun with Chinese Symbols Stencils 5 out of 5 stars.

I like the size of these and they are perfect for making your own artwork.

Great for the kids 5 out of 5 stars.

These stencils have amused the kids longer than any high dollar gift ever. Thanks Amazon!!!!!!!

Overpriced 3 out of 5 stars.

The price charged for this little stencil book was more than twice the price printed on the back of the book itself. It was in good condition, but not worth inflated price plus postage.

Editorial Review:

Add a Far Eastern touch to needlecraft projects, poster art, and more with 6 sturdy stencils representing Chinese symbols for "Joy," "Luck," "Life," "Love," "Wealth," and "Long Life."

Sturdy and Cute 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

These stencils are cute and very sturdy. Basically the cover you see is the front of a folder. A large envelope is glued inside the folder, which contains 3 8x10 sheets of platic stencils. They are not hard plastic, but flexible. They can stand up to repeated use by a 4 year-old and six year-old.
The designs are great.

Very good!! a comparison 4 out of 5 stars.

I bought this and also the booklet "fun with dinosaur stencils" by a.g. smith

if I had to pick one out of the two I would pick "fun with dinosaurs" because I liked the outlines much better, though if you want a good pterodactyl the laser-cut plastic stencils has one while a.g. smith's book does not include this dinosaur!

I wasn't happy with either stencil set's T. Rex

the laser-cut plastic stencils include 16 dinosaurs along with some palm trees while "fun with dinosaurs" has just 6 dinosaurs: diplodocus, stegasaurus, tyrannosaurus, triceratops, dimetrodon, and rhamphorhynchus.

the laser-cut plastic stencils don't specify names right on the stencils.

Editorial Review:

Bold, eye-catching images of 12 prehistoric reptiles: triceratops, tyrannosaurus, stegosaurus, pteranodon, allosaurus, more. Use for tracing and coloring, arts and crafts, and other projects. 3 plastic sheets in an 8 1/4 x 11 folder. Instructions.

The title of this book is "RIGHT ON".. 5 out of 5 stars.
37 of 38 people found this review helpful.

I have watched stenciling and dry embossing on many craft shows and wanted to give it a try. This book helped me to do it quite simply and to create some great looking cards. Each card project has a list of the supplies you will need including stencil cream colors and gives you the name of the stencil company, item number of the stencil and where to purchase them. Each sample has step-by-step instructions -- both written and a picture of that step. At the end of each project they show you the card finished. ALL in color. I highly recommend this book to someone who wants easy to follow instructions, a great "visual" of each step and a look at how your finished card is going to look.

Editorial Review:

Stenciling is one of the easiest ways to add a personal touch to handmade cards that are sure to be treasured by recipients. The 18 projects in Stenciling & Embossing Greeting Cards by Judith Barker showcase a wide range of styles, occasions, and skill levels. Most are relatively easy, though, and the excellent instructions--complete with individual step-by-step color plate--help ensure that anyone really can achieve these designs. Each project also features a photocopy-ready stencil pattern that can be enlarged and cut out, or choose a readymade stencil for even easier crafting. Embellishments include various paints, glitter, embossing, cutouts, even polymer clay and shrink plastic. A good resource list rounds out this nice presentation. --Amy Handy

Editorial Review:

Now in paperback! -- 35,000 hardcover copies sold!

To make a big impression, says stencilling expert Sandra Buckingham, you don't have to re-create the Sistine Chapel. Start small, she counsels, and the rest will follow.

Buckingham's latest book "Stencilling on a Grand Scale" leads do-it-yourselfers beyond the realm of decorative borders featured in her best-selling "Stencilling: A Harrowsmith Guide" to a creative canvas whose limits are determined only by space, time and imagination. The key to her strategy is that a large stencilled work -- be it a door, wall, screen or floor -- can be the seamless sum of its parts. In other words, rather than using an expensive, unwieldy, multi-layered stencil to create a life-sized tree, use three 10 inch stencils of leaf clusters, laying and re-laying them to achieve the desired effect. The only limit to the ultimate size of the finished painting is the room you've set aside for it.

Whether you are fashioning a greeting card or a 40-foot mural, Buckingham recommends the same modest techniques. The methods used to faux-finish a wall -- a vine rambling up a corner, windows stencilled onto an actual door, a false shelf with flowerpots stencilled in an alcove -- can likewise be applied to furniture or folding screens and can be used on any scale.

A technical review of traditional and new stencilling tools is followed by a refresher course in basic stencilling methods, including stencil cutting, hard-surface stencilling, stencilling on primed canvas, overlays, registration and special effects, among them shading, shadows, plant detail and painting skies and landscapes. A chapter on freeform stencilling, with and without masks, prepares readers for the larger-scale works that are the book's central objective.

Buckingham advises perfecting your free-form skills on less ambitious projects (lampshades, borders, placemats) before moving to grander subjects. By the later chapters, stencillers will be comfortable tackling everything from picket and wrought iron fences, lattice work, garden gates, French doors, veranda doors and curtains to paving stones, terra-cotta tiles, carpets, mosaic floors, stone columns, balustrades, terraces, garden walls and room dividers. As always, Buckingham's genius lies in inspiration, and "Stencilling on a Grand Scale" introduces a how-to-world that has no boundaries.
