Color galore 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

An excellent guide to weaving and 600 patterns. The first part of the book is dedicated to weaving terms and techniques, with illustrations. The bulk of the book is treadle and heddle diagrams and color photos of the patterns created. A beautiful, lush and textural book.

An excellent book, for all stages, for weavers using 4-shafts.
Clear diagrams with photographs of the actual weaving item.
A must-have book at one's elbow when weaving.

Editorial Review:

A comprehensive introduction to the tools, equipment, fibers, and yarns used with four-shaft looms, this reference features patterns for 600 different weaves, including twill, zigzag, diamond, herringbone, and block. Color photographs and large-scale drawings allow weavers to closely examine the details, and the compact size and lay-flat binding is convenient for keeping near the loom. A handbook that is essential for all four-shaft weavers, this manual includes weaving basics, specialized projects organized by degree of difficulty, finishing techniques, resources, and a glossary of terms.

Learning to Weave, Revised Edition 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I really enjoyed this book. It has a lot of good information for everyone. It wasn't written for the complete beginner though. Even with that said, I think, if you're interested in getting started and learning the language etc., this is a very good book to start with.

New Weaver's Bible 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

When my weaving friends aren't around, this is my weaving bible. Great photos and text written in an easy-to-get manner. She even suggests inexpensive ways to create some of the tools needed. Sample patterns and suggested thread; lots of good ideas and various ways to achieve the same thing. Highly recommended.

Clear Instructions 5 out of 5 stars.

Just the right amount of photographs and all of the information is clear and step-by-step. Love the book.

Great book. 5 out of 5 stars.

As one other party suggests, this is not what I was really looking for but that does not alter the fact that this is an excellant book on weaving. I really needed a more basic book, BUT! After I learn the basics this is the book to have, if you have some knowledge of weaving and need to learn more on a real loom this is your book.
There are many things that I can use right now for instance the patterns, it gives ideas and patterns and it tells me if weaving is what I really want to do.
I would rather buy a book like this that makes me make up my mind by telling me what I am in for, than buy a loom costing hundreds of dollars to find it is beyond me. For this alone the book is worth it.
Right now I am trying weaving on a very small scale to get the feel of it, this book will help me and can be used to some degree on any level of weaving, you can make your own weaving board from cardboard if you wish and use some of these ideas. Then you can graduate to a table loom or a floor loom. All in all, I recommend this book to anyone even slightly interested in weaving.

Editorial Review:

Since its first printing a decade ago, this guide has become the standard text book for both teachers and self-taught weavers, teaching all they need to know about warping, reading and designing drafts, and the basics of weave structures.

A must read for those even thinking of adopting a toddler 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 3 people found this review helpful.

I found this to be a great book. It really opened my eyes to what a toddler adoption could be like. I highly recommend it.

Fantastic preparation for adoptive parents 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Anyone thinking of a foreign adoption should read this book before beginning the adoption process! I feel better prepared for the toddler we plan to adopt, and I have a friend who decided to adopt only an infant after reading this book, because she felt she couldn't handle the difficulties that would come with a toddler - attachment problems, grief issues, etc. Adoption is much more difficult than I could have ever imagined, financially, emotionally, timewise, but I feel confident I can do it and feel like I've been given the information I need to be prepared for the difficulties I may experience - and hopefully I now will be pleasantly surprised instead of rudely awakened!

Wonderful 5 out of 5 stars.

This is a wonderful, intelligently written, informative book for anybody considering toddler adoption. The first hand experience of toddler adoption by the author links the concept to reality. I absolutely loved this book and would highly recommend it to all perspective adoptive parents.

New to spinning? Cut-to-the-chase crash course in how to do it! 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

I'm a new spinner and felt overwhelmed with the technical aspects of it when I decided to learn. What I needed was a "just the facts" kind of guide that would let me get started and not overwhelm me with nerdy technical stuff that passionate and experienced practitioners love to talk about. Start Spinning is definitely it!

Based on the reviews here, I bought a copy and agree completely with the 5-stars that most of the reviewers gave it.

It's like a teacher in a box. Great illustrations. Clear definitions of terms that you really need to know Does not overwhelm you with jargon that you will pick up later if you get seduced by the craft. Covers everything from basic spinning, plying and using your handspun to choosing a wheel, planning a project, buying and evaluating fleece for spinning. SIMPLE and CLEAR. And not too much information.

I love this book and would recommend it to anyone curious about the craft of spinning and wanting a good reference guide.

Editorial Review:

For knitters, crocheters, and weavers ready to make their own yarn, this handy guide provides detailed instructions for spinning both on a spindle and a wheel, and offers a special section devoted to troubleshooting and wheel maintenance that keeps projects on track. It offers a comprehensive look at the various available fiber options, choosing and preparing each type of fiber for use, and crafting these materials into ready-to-work pieces. A final chapter on the various uses of spun yarn focuses on project planning, with definitions and context for measuring wraps per inch, determining yards for specific projects, and choosing a yarn size.

Great Rigid Heddle introduction 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

I really like this book. The photos are very clear and the text is easy to understand. This book will take you through your very first faltering steps into weaving and beyond. The projects are interesting and ones I would use. They are well presented and each project teaches a new skill. Highly recommend this book for beginners and even more advanced weavers.

Editorial Review:

Weaving, one of the fastest ways to produce cloth, is thoroughly explained in this simple guide to the age-old craft. A perfect blend of ease and functionality, the small, portable rigid heddle loom can be used to easily produce loose, drape-friendly fabric as well as dense, sturdy material. Eighteen projects—for scarves, bags, belts, tops, and a bevy of household goodies such as pillows, rugs, and blankets—explore how to combine colors and create textured fabrics using a variety of techniques. Additional tips on adding crocheted edges, beaded fringe, and needle-felted flowers are also included.

Editorial Review:

The pleasure of knitting can be that much greater when you know you’re using the perfect yarn. In A Fine Fleece, designer, knitter, and spinner Lisa Lloyd explores the different qualities of handspun yarn and presents projects that show them to their best advantage. There is valuable information here for every knitter, even if you’ve never considered learning to spin (though you may find inspiration in this book to do just that).

While educating you on the differences in fibers (like Alpaca, Merino, Cormo, Rambouillet, and Suffolk) and the characteristics you can achieve in a handspun yarn by combining fibers according to certain recipes, Lisa Lloyd also shares the three important concepts that enlighten her designs: the use of contrasting color and fiber; scale and perspective (chunky yarns with chunky cable stitches versus chunky yarns with delicate ones); and the creation of “poetic” sweaters that try to capture an emotion.

Each of the 26 projects in A Fine Fleece shows the finished project knitted in both a handspun yarn and a commercial yarn so that you can train your eye to understand how fiber and texture can truly transform a piece.

The essential guide for leather braiding 5 out of 5 stars.

This is a valuable resource for leather workers an knot tyers. While many of the knots and braids are interchangeable the section on "mystery braiding" is worth the price of the book.

Good information, well presented.

Kumihimo for beginners 5 out of 5 stars.

I am a new Kumihimo enthusiast and was looking for something to help me. I love the photos and very easy to follow directions and diagrams! Would definately recommend to those who are interested in this very addictive craft!

Well done! 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

As a beginner to kumihimo, I felt this book covered all the basics needed to learn the braiding process. Once you follow the step by step photo images and diagrams, it was easy to pick up the steps. Although I used the pearl cotton threads for my first project, it is not necessary to keep using the suggested threads as they can be costly. I used cotton blend yarn, nylon cord, and even hemp as my cords and found great results, depending on your project needs.

excellent how-to book 5 out of 5 stars.

The author makes this very easy. Granted this is a beginners book but you can still make a 'pretty' on your first effort. Her dimensions for a wooden marudai (stand) were so accurate that my husband made me one from scrap hardwood in his shop. Like most arts/crafts,you can go forward from this point and get into really complicated braids, or not....the choice is up to you. There are many practical uses for beautiful braids. My first one is attached to a pull for a ceiling fan. This book contains instructions for square, round and flat braids.

This collection of patterns and traditions features shawls from around the world. From the Himalayas to Spain, from Iceland to Japan, and from Mexico to Norway, many of the shawls featured here have been taken from examples of historic knitted shawls. Other designs have been translated into knitwear from patterns for woven or lace shawls. Included are 25 patterns as well as historical and cultural information about shawls that have been used for prayer and mourning, as bridal veils, and as christening garments. Each design is presented with a full-page color photo, written instructions, and charts.

This book is a compilation of full page pictures of plain weave using different colors of yarn, some texture changes, some novelty stuff. Chapters are divided by color. 4 reds, 4 blues, etc. There is nothing of substance here and for me, absolutely no inspiration. Save your money. My copy is going straight to auction.
