I bought this book and the pictures are outstanding. They are all life like, not sketches. It is very easy to read. This book talks about insects, climate and soil and other topics to numerous to remember.

Happy camper 5 out of 5 stars.

Being a certified nurseryman,I have found this book to be an invaluable tool for customer service and to boost sales. I just wish Ortho would take the professional edition and split it into maybe four books to make it more manageable.

Must have this book 5 out of 5 stars.

It is a wonderful reference book! The pictures are great and it is easy to identify the culprit in the garden. The recomended treatments are easy to understand. It is a must have book for every gardner.
I also feel that the price for this book is fair for the information that it contains.

Not much of a real problem solver 2 out of 5 stars.

Fair as a gardening resource, but is basically a very large instruction manual for the line of Ortho gardening chemicals. Its whole purpose is to tell you which of their products to use for which pest or fungus or nutrient difficientcy.

Review from CC Archives 5 out of 5 stars.

Hemp diseases and pests An amazing new tome on cannabis cultivation. from CC On-line, by Pete Brady

Here's the perfect recipe for a book about cannabis: use three authors who have spent decades studying cannabis horticulture, combine them with an international publishing company, and give them enough resources to create an oversized book with professional citations, illustrations, and binding.

This perfect recipe has produced a gorgeous new book, HEMP DISEASES AND PESTS - MANAGEMENT AND BIOLOGICAL CONTROL. The authors - Dr. John McPartland, Robert Connell Clarke, and David Watson - are premier marijuana researchers whose credibility and breadth of knowledge are legendary.

McPartland is a medical doctor, botanist and cannabinoid researcher. Clarke is the author of two epic texts, MARIJUANA BOTANY and HASHISH!. Watson runs HortaPharm, the Dutch cannabis breeding consortium supplying specialty cannabis to UK med-pot research projects conducted by GW Pharmaecuticals.

HEMP DISEASES AND PESTS is a fascinating, practical book, and an upcoming issue of CANNABIS CULTURE will give a more complete summary of its features. For the purposes of this brief online review, however, I assure you that this book will significantly increase yield, efficiency and quality for any marijuana grower who follows its advice.

The book includes photos that help growers diagnose dozens of plant dysfunctions, including enemy insects, mites, mammals, and fungi, environmentally-caused problems, overwatering, and nutrient deficiencies. It tells growers how to protect their crops using biocontrols instead of toxic chemicals. It describes ideal soil components, harvesting guidelines, and curing procedures.

Although HEMP DISEASES AND PESTS is not intended as a "grow book" that focuses on lighting, security, and clandestine techniques, its scope, accuracy and detail make it an incomparable textbook that every marijuana grower should have. It is interesting and entertaining, immaculately presented and organized, and features the most innovative and reliable techniques for keeping your plants healthy and happy.

HEMP DISEASES AND PESTS is a large, 251 page, professional book with a professional price. It's well worth it. When I grew my own marijuana, I was often puzzled by plant problems. If I'd had this book, I could have easily eliminated those problems. HEMP DISEASES AND PESTS will likely increase the yield of your garden by at least 50%- if that's not worth, I don't know what is!

Editorial Review:

Hemp is enjoying a worldwide resurgence. This book combines a useful review of the hemp pest and disease literature published over the past 50 years, with up-to-date information on modern biological control techniques. Each pest and disease organism is presented in the same format, covering range and economic impact, symptoms, life history, diagnosis, and both new and old techniques for biological control and chemical control. Easy to use keys are included for rapid identification of the most common pests. Introductory chapters describe the general principles of plant protection, requirements for healthy plant growth, and taxonomy of parasites and pathogens.

Happy weeding! 4 out of 5 stars.
16 of 17 people found this review helpful.

I find this book to be most helpful, as well as easy to read and comprehend. I have learned so much about gardening and controlling those pesky weeds, and have actually had fun doing it(if weeds can be fun!) The layout of the book is intelligent, and the illustrations are extremely well done....I don't think anyone reading this book will have any trouble identifying weeds in their garden. It's a good investment for ANY gardener!

More pictures please! 3 out of 5 stars.

This book has lots of helpful information, but color illustrations or photographs would help much more in terms of identifying weeds.

Editorial Review:

Praised by The New York Times as "an indispensable guide for the homeowner and the professional," Tree Maintenance has been the definitive source on maintenance of North American landscape trees for over fifty years, an essential reference not only for arborists, nurserymen, and landscape architects, but for all homeowners who want to keep their trees healthy and pest free.
The Seventh Edition, now named in honor of Dr. P. P. Pirone, who authored the first five editions and co-authored the sixth, has been revised to reflect the enormous amount of new information available since the last edition, including the latest techniques in selecting, planting, and protecting trees. The authors explain how to evaluate the site (the soil, drainage, and exposure), how to select the right tree for that location, and how to prune, fertilize, and spray for pests. There is an extensive section on the diagnosis and control of tree pests and diseases, and on problems such as construction damage, gas injury, sunscald, leaf scorch, and air pollution. While the general structure of the sixth edition has been retained, there are several topics--notably hazardous trees and coping with tree pests and diseases--that have received greater attention than in previous versions of the book. The second half of the book comprises a systematic listing of the major landscape trees found in North America, describing the specific pests and diseases that attack each species.
Well organized, clearly written, and beautifully illustrated with many new photographs, Pirone's Tree Maintenance is an encyclopedic resource, the first place to turn for information on dogwoods and elms, magnolias and redwoods, or any other tree growing in North America. Anyone serious about gardening will want this book on their shelf.

Editorial Review:

Biological control – utilizing a population of natural enemies to seasonally or permanently suppress pests – is not a new concept. The cottony cushion scale, which nearly destroyed the citrus industry of California, was controlled by an introduced predatory insect in the 1880s. Accelerated invasions by insects and spread of weedy non-native plants in the last century have increased the need for the use of biological control. Use of carefully chosen natural enemies has become a major tool for the protection of natural ecosystems, biodiversity and agricultural and urban environments.

This book offers a multifaceted yet integrated discussion on two major applications of biological control: permanent control of invasive insects and plants at the landscape level and temporary suppression of both native and exotic pests in farms, tree plantations, and greenhouses. Written by leading international experts in the field, the text discusses control of invasive species and the role of natural enemies in pest management.

This book is essential reading for courses on Invasive Species, Pest Management, and Crop Protection. It is an invaluable reference book for biocontrol professionals, restorationists, agriculturalists, and wildlife biologists.

Editorial Review:

Ornamental trees, shrubs, and flowers are an important component of modern life, from houseplants to trees in public parks. This authoritative and beautifully illustrated account provides a unique source of reference for all practitioners involved in the recognition, biology, and control of the pests of ornamental crops. The introduction reviews the main features of insects, mites and other major pest groups, followed by a discussion of the principles of pest control.

The bulk of the book is devoted to the various pests. Each major order and family is considered in turn, accompanied by detailed descriptions and photographs to aid in identification. Entries also include the life history of the pest, and explain the kind of damage caused to the infested plant and the severity of the plant’s reaction ---not all pests require removal action. The author recommends appropriate control measures, including environmentally conscious methods such as hand-picking and elimination of insect hiding places, as well as certain pesticide and chemical controls.

This reference will prove indispensible to a wide range of readers. Entomologists, horticulturalists, pest control specialists, integrated pest management (IPM) practitioners, growers, students, and teachers will all find this to be a thorough and comprehensive text.

A COMPLETE AND NATURAL SOLUTION TO GARDEN PESTS 5 out of 5 stars.
22 of 23 people found this review helpful.

I read the entire book from cover to cover with a highlighter in hand. I could not stop reading (and highlighting). This book was exactly what I was searching for. A complete and natural guide to ridding my garden of those pesky pests. I have used many of Loren's "receipes" and can honestly say they work. I would and do recommend this book to anyone who has a love for gardening, a love for nature, and a hate for destructive pests who get in the way.

An excellent resource! 4 out of 5 stars.
9 of 10 people found this review helpful.

I listened to Loren's tips for years on television. It is nice to have so many of them compiled in one handy resource. The tips contained are cost-effective, easy to use, and far better for people and the enviroment. Highly recommended!

Editorial Review:

No, this isn't a slimy murder mystery! Here's a guide to natural pest control in your home and garden (and even on your pets). It offers simple techniques to help you avoid the use of toxic pesticides and chemicals around the house, and is a welcome alternative to the old "Kills Them Dead" mentality of poison sprays and powders common in the past (which is where they should be--the past). Here's the guide you've been waiting for!

Editorial Review:

William Alexander had a simple dream of having a vegetable garden and small orchard in his backyard. It was a dream that would lead to life-and-death battles with groundhogs, webworms, and weeds; midnight expeditions in the dead of winter to dig up fresh thyme; skirmishes with neighbors who feed the vermin (i.e., deer); the near electrocution of the tree man; and the pity of his wife and children.

When Alexander decided to run a cost-benefit analysis, adding up everything from the Havahart animal trap ($60) to the Velcro tomato wraps ($5) to the steel edging ($1,200), then amortizing it over the life of his garden, it came as quite a shock to learn that it cost him a staggering $64 to grow each tomato.

A gardener with an existential bent, Alexander gives excellent advice about everything from peaches to leeks, while tackling such questions as What do our gardens tell us about ourselves? Do we get the gardens we deserve? And why does the groundhog have to take one bite from half a dozen tomatoes when any gardener would gladly grant him six bites of just one?
