The basics of curriculum design and beyond 5 out of 5 stars.
9 of 9 people found this review helpful.

This is a fantastic book. It is a must for any nursing educator teaching a course or part of a course on curriculum or any faculty doing curriculum design. I love it. It has many wonderful features - one of which are synthesis activities that take the reader through the thinking necessary to do all the parts of a curriculum. It is a must buy.

Editorial Review:

Curriculum Development in Nursing Education addresses curriculum theory and practical applications that guide nurse educators in creating curricula that match paradigmatic and contextual influences. Each chapter includes a description of one element of the curriculum development process, a discussion about faculty development activities to support that aspect of curriculum development, case studies that target the specific concepts and processes addressed, and other synthesis activities that will enable the reader to apply the process to their own contexts. By thoughtfully and thoroughly completing all the exercises throughout the book, nurse educators will have a curriculum suited to their individual setting.

Teaching Strategies For Nurse Educators, August 19, 2003 5 out of 5 stars.
22 of 22 people found this review helpful.

As a future nursing educator I found this book to be indispensable. Over the past fifteen years of my nursing career, I have been in virtually every nursing educational setting. For this reason I have collected numerous books and nursing resources on the subjects of cognitive processes, learning and teaching techniques. This book by far pulls all the information together, and it will become the most utilized of my collection. The information is laid out in a logical format that starts with the basic concepts, theories, objectives and goals of learning. She then moves on to explain how to prepare and conduct classes. She concludes with the testing and evaluation process. DeYoung takes you gradually through everything you need to know to formulate and conduct a classroom setting that is both stimulating and achieves the goal of educating nurses to become critical thinking, problem-solvers. Her work employs the latest research on learning/education and at the end of every chapter she reinforces learning through case studies, critical thinking exercises and ideas for future research. Any nursing educator within the academic setting or within the clinical area would benefit from this text. She has made the material easy to understand for the beginning educator and advanced enough for the expert. I wish I had had this resource at the start of my career. I absolutely recommend this book.

Editorial Review:

For courses in teaching Nursing. This readable text prepares graduate nursing students to be nurse educators in settings of staff development, patient education, or academia-covering commonalties of teaching that pertain to all three. Practical information and cutting-edge content emphasize the theories and strategies most likely to be used in the field.

Great Resource for Nursing Faculty 5 out of 5 stars.
38 of 39 people found this review helpful.

This book is intended for part-time clinical faculty in nursing programs but it has excellent chapters that can be helpful to anyone teaching in nursing education. It addresses many helpful techniques that experienced clinical educators have used, as well results of research in clinical teaching. The chapter dealing with interpersonal issues in clinical education is especially helpful in addressing the difficult situations that arise with students. The book addresses the context of education from a theoretical perspective and incorporates the legal and ethical issues which impact teaching in the clinical setting. I found this a very helpful resource in the graduate courses I teach in nursing education.

Editorial Review:

AJN Book of the Year Award 2001. Clinical Instruction and Evaluation: A Teaching Resource is a guide for part-time faculty who are expert clinicians with a strong interest in teaching, but with little preparation for the role of nursing educator. This book specifically covers both the theoretical and practical know-how needed to succeed as a clinical nursing instructor and provide the highest quality of clinical education for nursing students.

Printing Quality On the Decline 2 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

This review is not about the contents of the book, but about the quality of printing.

The print is muddy and smeared as opposed to crisp and clear. There are dots on the page as if it was photocopied on a glass that had not been cleaned recently. Another phenomenon of the printing is the alternate "stretching" and "shrinking" of letters resulting in misshapen print.

If this is an example of what book buyers can expect from academic publishers, then the books should be available on CD. At least on my computer screen, the letters are crisp and clear.

Editorial Review:

This third edition clearly explains the unique role of the nurse as a health teacher in a variety of practice settings and provides a foundation for the process of health teaching. This text thoroughly outlines the learning process and different types of learning techniques. It explores the effect of the environment on the teaching-learning process, and it demonstrates group and individual teaching scenarios. Sample activities focus on health promotion. In addition, critical thinking exercises are included at the end of every chapter. Undergraduate and graduate nursing students.
