Human Labor and Birth 5 out of 5 stars.
28 of 28 people found this review helpful.

As one who has been studying the science of midwifery for three years, I can say that I have loved this book! There are many reasons for this love:
1) HL&B covers nearly every conceivable obstetrical topic succinctly yet thoroughly. If you want the low-down on anything from umbilical cords to breech delivery to sacculation of the uterus, this is the book to go to! You won't find any extraneous content: this is a textbook through and through - it cuts to the chase!
2) I appreciated the author's comprehensive coverage of medical options. A lot of textbooks (esp. nursing texts) are of the mentality "when this happens, this is what you do" whereas this book presents all options for treatment management (even though you might probably end up doing what the nursing text says!), as well as prognosis info.
3) The illustrations (hand-drawn) are immensely helpful and quite plentiful.
4) HL&B is compact (1.5" x 6" x 9"), so when wanting to study on the go, this was the definite choice.

The only drawback to this book is that it is a paperback (I am unaware if it is available in hardcover). Notwithstanding, I would highly recommend this book to anyone studying obstetrics at any level.

There isn't a better breastfeeding book!!! 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

The older edition is the best: illustrations depict what they are talking about to eliminate any confusion and helped me and my baby nurse better (and 3 times longer!) than with my first daughter. I was disappointed to find the new version didn't do as good of a job with the "do" and "don't" pictures...

I researched them all - this one's THE BEST 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

I felt so overwhelmed when my son was born, that I checked out all the recommended books on breastfeeding provided by the hospital (15 of them). This one was the best: it was clear, it was helpful, and it provided truly useful advice. The pictures & photos with the right & wrong way to do things are awesome. Helped me have confidence!

Editorial Review:

This book is the culmination of 40-plus years of hands-on experience from three dedicated and internationally respected authors. Newly updated, it blends academic knowledge, clinical expertise, and practical skills to educate first-time and experienced mothers alike. Mothers will find precisely the information they need to help their babies grow and thrive physically and emotionally as a result of breastfeeding.

ok, not great 3 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

This handbook was pretty good, but I actually found it to be an unnecessary addition to my clinical experience. I certainly wouldn't say it was a "must have" like some of the other handbooks I've used.

Good information, but not as thourough as I had hoped. 3 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

This was a really good review book and helpful while in the clinical environment, but it didn't have as much info as I needed to rely on it solely. There was still quite a bit of studying to be done!

Did Not Read, Yet, But I KNOW!! 5 out of 5 stars.

I purchased the Clinical Handbook for Medical Surgical Nursing, and it was a god-send! Therefore, I know that this book is well worth the purchase. It really narrowed down all that I needed for med-surg, so I know that anything by this company should be obtained by nursing students.

Editorial Review:

Nurses working with childbearing families face a variety new challenges, including shortened lengths of hospital stay, the trend toward greater use of community-based and home care, and downsizing and mergers of health-care systems. This pocket guide is an ideal resource providing vital information to guide maternal-newborn nurses from pregnancy to the postpartum and newborn stages. It features drug guides, procedures, and common abbreviations for terminology. For student nurses gaining clinical experience.

Very mainstream but worthwhile 4 out of 5 stars.
28 of 30 people found this review helpful.

While I am not a "mainstream " childbirth educator, there are many aspects of this book that I have found myself referring back to during my teaching career. It was very helpful in learning about the adult learner and thier particular physical, emotional , sociocultural and cognitive needs. The chapter on the "the basis of relaxation" was very interesting as it helped me understand the history of using relaxation in childbirth and the different philosphies behind each technique. Biofeedback, therapeutic touch and acupressure were presented in an extremely informative manner. The basics of the childbirth education business arepresented( something that can be overlooked in most teachers passion for their "Cause"). A very mainstreamm textbook that can be of great value to both hospital and independent educators alike.

Editorial Review:

Georgetown Univ., Washington, D.C. Textbook for students and nurses for patient education. Covers the childbirth educator, expectant parents, supportive strategies for childbirth, promoting wellness, the classroom experience, and professional practice. Includes useful appendices. Great Book for Students, But....... 4 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

This is very nice for Nursing students (I am a student so I can't say if an RN working would like it or not) but.....if you buy the Med/Surg book from this company, a CD comes with it and the CD contains the info in this book. My suggestion, if you need both, would be to get the Med/Surg book.

Also, the edition comes with a Disk not a CD and it is not as nice as the CD.

where is the disk 4 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

the book is very helpful for nursing students. amazon, however advertised it as containing a disk that allowed for cut and paste action. No such disk was ever delivered and I ordered a new rather than used book just for the disk.

Editorial Review:

Includes a free disk with cut-and-paste feature to individualize patie nt care. The text is divided into 4 sections (prenatal, intrapartal, postpartal, and newborn) and includes 50 plans of care.
