Editorial Review:

Hospital stays after a stroke are often short compared to the lengthy period of rehabilitation and gradual return of function. After a Stroke concentrates on the home recovery process, assisting patients and their families in the transition from patient back to person. Author Cleo Hutton, herself a twelve-year stroke survivor and nurse, gives readers tips she learned and used herself during her recovery. She addresses topics such as communication, emotional liability, safety issues, personal care, relaxation techniques, and intimacy issues. The book frankly discusses self-esteem issues and using humor as a healing tool — no subject is off limits. Over 300 tips cover everything from dressing, hair care, cooking, and airline travel to using a computer and alleviating pain. After a Stroke describes in detail how to accomplish daily living routines, combat fatigue, enjoy recreational activities, and how to turn stroke deficits into assets. Hutton leaves no gaps in relating what families and fellow stroke survivors need to know to live a full life post stroke.

Editorial Review:

Not all that long ago, dementia, or a deterioration of mental ability, was considered a natural part of aging, but with increased knowledge of Alzheimer's disease and improved diagnostic capabilities, any time an older individual misplaces car keys or forgets an appointment, family members are quick to conclude that their loved one is in the throes of Alzheimer's. Although today the public all too often associates dementia symptoms with Alzheimer's disease, the medical profession can now distinguish various types of "other" dementias that also undermine cognitive abilities, often with onset at a younger age. WHAT IF IT'S NOT ALZHEIMER'S is the first comprehensive guide dealing with frontotemporal dementia (FTD), one of the largest groups of non-Alzheimer's dementias. The contributors to this book are either specialists in their fields or have exceptional hands-on experience with FTD sufferers.

Editors Lisa and Gary Radin divide their highly accessible reference work into four parts. Beginning with a discussion of the medical facts, part one defines and explores FTD as an illness distinct from Alzheimer's disease. Also considered are clinical and medical care issues and practices, as well as such topics as finding a medical team and rehabilitation interventions. The essays in part two focus on managing care and examine daily routines, including nutrition, exercise, socialization, adapting the home environment, and behavioral issues. Part three centers on caregiver resources, and the contributors identify professional and government assistance programs along with private resources and legal options. Finally, the chapters in part four stress the need for caregivers to take care of themselves as well as their loved ones with FTD.

This much-needed resource work, the first of its kind, provides a wealth of real and practical information to both healthcare professionals and caregivers of someone suffering from frontotemporal dementia.

Love neuroscience-get this book! 5 out of 5 stars.

The Clinical Practice of Neurological and Neurosurgical Nursing is an excellent overview of the care and management of the neuroscience patient. It's perspective is largely that of neurosurgery/ trauma nursing and is focused predominately on the acute phases of care. This text is arranged topically by disease/ injury process with the introductory chapters oriented towards concerns in neuroscience nursing. The depth and breadth of the material is suitable to meet my needs in the neuro-intensive care unit of the Level I trauma center in which I work. It provides a ready and easy to use reference with solid explantions of disease process, complications, treatment, pharmacology, and nursing considerations. I recommend this text to new nurses in neuroscience at my hospital regularly and I am currently using it to prepare for certification in neuroscience nursing.

Editorial Review:

Great resource for nurses everywhere! 5 out of 5 stars.
7 of 7 people found this review helpful.

Ms Milne and her colleagues have done an outstanding job in creating a definitive knowledge source for wound care, ostomy care and continence. The material is current, comprehensive, but most importantly, very easy for busy nurses to use.
Since nurses are caring for an increasingly aging population, they are likely to find patients with these specific needs on a regular basis. Those nurses who are facing the challenges in the care of these patients will find this a complete and user-friendly source. It fits the needs equally well for nurses in all settings- hospitals, outpatient facilities and home care. Nursing students will appreciate it as well. A book this comprehensive as well as practical is long overdue!

Editorial Review:

(Hanley & Belfus) The State Univ. of New Jersey, Newark. Text provides information needed for effective and efficient wound, ostomy, and continence care within a multidisciplinary approach. Features include a question-and-answer format, bulleted lists for quick review, and two appendices listing resources for patients.

This is not a very expensive text book for it's category. All the same it is a well written book by a reputable author and staff. The book demands that you pay full attention to every word in it's text. I mean that the text is written in a concise manner by a professional for the novice. Attention to detail is of utmost importance when you are studying. A solid basic knowledge of first year anatomy and physiology is essential. It wouldn't hurt to have your A&P text beside you. The author assumes that the student knows the basics and does not go into basic discussions but builds on each topic. Understand that this is a challenging text book pulling together all facets of A&P with full emphasis on Respiratory Care.
I personally find this text book a pleasant challenge. Keep in mind that the ultimate goal here is to be capable of keeping someone breathing. After all if you can't breath nothing else matters!
