Editorial Review:

When home and hospice care providers carry MOSBY'S HOME CARE AND HOSPICE DRUG HANDBOOK, they have the most current drug information at their side. It includes introductory chapters on Medicare, home infusion therapy, and special patient populations; detailed coverage of drugs commonly used in home and hospice care organized by disorder or condition; and a four-color drug identification atlas. This handy resource also highlights important information such as nursing implications, contraindications, patient education, and documentation for quality and reimbursement. It's the only handbook that focuses on the drug information that home care and hospice providers need when caring for their unique, growing patient population.

* Includes important foundation content in six introductory chapters that cover Medicare reimbursement of drug therapy, home infusion therapy, quality and safety, special patient populations, and other topics. * Organizes thirty-six home and hospice conditions alphabetically to allow fast retrieval of essential information. * Supplies general care considerations, medical diagnoses and ICD-9 codes, desired outcomes of therapy, nursing diagnoses, documentation and reimbursement tips, drug cost considerations, and informational resources for every condition. * Describes in detail hundreds of drugs identified as being the most commonly used medications in home care and hospice settings. * Provides a full-color drug identification guide organized alphabetically to help clinicians ensure that the patient receives the correct medication. * Supplies specific documentation tips for drugs used with each condition to insure quality and support reimbursement for home care and hospice organizations. * Includes an alphabetical list of all drugs covered by generic and trade name with page references for quick reference. * Highlights contraindications to alert clinicians to known sensitivities to a drug. * Presents patient education and teaching priorities, including information for taking medications safely in home or hospice settings. * Identifies common side effects and life-threatening adverse reactions for immediate recognition in emergency situations. * Includes extensive information on drug/drug and drug/food interactions for patient safety. * Features a functional, user-friendly two-color design that includes icons for nursing implications, contraindications, patient education and teaching priorities, and documentation for quality and reimbursement; color drug monograph headings; and screened index pages to facilitate easy location of information. * Includes an appendix on low income medication assistance programs since the high cost of many drugs can effect patient compliance. * Features a flexible binding for easy access and convenient use in home and hospice settings.

Editorial Review:

Make your patients’final days as comfortable as possible!

There are few situations more challenging and emotionally taxing to a medical professional than the care of the terminally ill. Much has been learned in recent years about symptom control that can profoundly improve the quality of life in a patient's final days.

Evidence Based Symptom Control in Palliative Care: Systemic Reviews and Validated Clinical Practice Guidelines for 15 Common Problems in Patients with Life Limiting Disease provides you with symptom control approaches that will help meet patients’last wishes, improve the quality of life for patients and their families, and lessen their physical and emotional pain.

Palliative care--often based on anecdotal experience--has until now been inconsistent and much of the time less than optimally effective. Evidence Based Symptom Control in Palliative Care is the result of comprehensive literature reviews and clinical validation resulting in recommendations and suggestions for therapies that will improve the lives of patients who are in pain and discomfort.

Evidence Based Symptom Control in Palliative Care presents seven sections--Algorithm, Literature Review, Evidence Tables, Drug Therapy Tables, Evaluation Instruments, Unanswered Questions, and References--on each of these problems:
  • anorexia and cachexia
  • anxiety
  • bleeding problems
  • constipation
  • delirium
  • depression
  • diarrhea
  • dyspnea (shortness of breath)
  • fatigue and weakness
  • mouth problems
  • nausea and vomiting
  • nutrition and hydration

Evidence Based Symptom Control in Palliative Care is a vital guide for physicians, nurses, pharmacists, social workers, and other clinicians caring for patients with advanced irreversible diseases. This volume supplies the data you'll require to offer patients relevant care and meet their needs.

Editorial Review:

Geriatric Palliative Care covers a broad spectrum of issues characterizing care near the end of life for older adults. Beginning with the social and cultural context of old age and frailty, this volume details specific aspects of palliative care relevant to particular disorders (e.g. cancer, strokes, dementia, etc.) as well as individual symptoms (e.g., pain, fatigue, anxiety, etc.). Communication between care-givers and patients, in a variety of settings, is also discussed.
The theme of this book is that palliative care is the best approach to the care of chronically ill and frail elderly because of its focus on: quality of life; support for functional independence; and the centrality of the patient's values and experiences in determining the goals of medical care. Indeed, Geriatric Palliative Care provides a comprehensive medical reference for all clinicians who care for older adults.

7 of 8 people found this review helpful.

A valuable contribution to the speciality of palliative care. I can safely say that this volume is the most comprehensive collection of palliative nursing issues the likes I have not found anywhere else.

Editorial Review:

The Textbook of Palliative Nursing is an international resource for nurses in the emerging field of palliative care. Throughout the text, the editors focus on the priniples of palliative care throughout the course of a chronic progressive incurable disease rather than only at the end of life. The scope is broad and the content, contributed by over 80 national and international nurse experts, covers the world of palliative care nursing across many different settings. Included are long term care, home care, hospice, acute care settings, intensive care units and out patient/ office settings. The needs of special populations are addressed, including, pediatrics, the elderly, the cognitively impaired, the poor and under-served, the homeless, and those with AIDS. Assessment, symptom management, spirituality, the meaning of hope at end-of-life, special issues for nurses who provide end-of-life care, issues of truth telling, and ethical issues are all addressed.
