Great pictures, but lacking ideas 4 out of 5 stars.
3 of 4 people found this review helpful.

First off, I do not regret buying this book. The photography is simply phenomonal, and it is inspiring just to look at the pictures. But unfortunetly, there are not really many gift giving "ideas". So if you bought this book looking for a new twist on gifts, you will be disapointed.

Ideas include putting flowers from the garden into bottles, or using big "floppy roses", or colored packing peanuts. Not to origional, but still beautiful. She does convey the importance of giving thoughtful gifts, not just store bought items. Some reviewers had said that this is just a repeat of what is shown on her television show. I personally don't watch the show, so it's not a repeat for me.

Without the photography, I would have rated this book a two. But the pictures are what inspires you to give creative and thoughtful gifts.

Editorial Review:

Now your gifts can reflect your warm, caring thoughts and reflect the beautiful and comforting style that is Shabby Chic. Rachel Ashwell shares the wonderful gift ideas she has collected throughout the years and shows you how to express your sentiments with a classic alluring style. She shows you how to pick the perfect gift for the perfect person or occasion and then how to wrap and decorate it with style. For example, instead of giving your fashion-obsessed best friend a sweater in a box, why not put it on an old antique dressmaker's dummy? Instead of giving an impersonal holiday card from Hallmark, why not create personalized cards that fit every occasion? The Shabby Chic Gift of Giving is a perfect book for the holiday season, and it will offer year round gift giving guidance for birthdays, Valentine's Day, Christmas or Hanukkah, Mother's Day, Father's Day and other special occasions.

5+ stars for the book itself, 1 star for this edition 1 out of 5 stars.
10 of 10 people found this review helpful.

Don't be fooled by the promise of illustrations by Mary Engelbreit. This is one of my favorite childhood books, and I bought this edition expecting illustrations by Mary Engelbreit throughout the book. The only illustration is the front cover. Do not buy this book expecting an illustrated volume.

Collectible Classic 5 out of 5 stars.

I bought this as a present for my grand-daughter. I plan to collect all of Mary Engelbreit's Classic Library. These are the books that many generations have shared for years only illustrated by one of my favorite contempory artist!

Editorial Review:

Ten years ago, Martha Stewart made cooking a primary focus of her bold new magazine, Martha Stewart Living. Over the decade, each issue has been a treasure of culinary information and inspiration, bringing the pleasures of cooking and entertaining--in impeccable style--to millions of devoted readers, from novice cooks to professional caterers.

At last all of Martha's favorite magazine recipes have been gathered in a single volume. The Martha Stewart Cookbook is a compendium of the best of the best from the food pages of every issue. But more than a mere collection, this specially designed volume is a major step in Martha's mission to keep home cooking traditions alive. The Martha Stewart Cookbook is filled with recipes--1200 in all--for every kind of cook and every occasion. Some recipes invite you to stretch your cooking knowledge and expertise while others provide inspiration--and instruction--for what to have for dinner.

Organized, in trademark style, for maximum practicality and ease of use, this major general-purpose cookbook features nineteen classically arranged chapters, from Basics, Breakfast, and Hors d:Oeuvres to Meat, Poultry, Fish and Shellfish and Desserts. In between there are Salads, Soups, Vegetables and whole chapters devoted to Vegetarian Main Courses and Potatoes. Throughout, there are basic classes--cooking 101s--for making food that should be in every cook's repertoire: macaroni and cheese, omelets, roast turkey, fried chicken and mashed potatoes. Specialty dishes are here, too, whether the occasion calls for a casual cocktail party, dinner with the in-laws, or a sit down luncheon for a bride-to-be. Cooking tips and techniques, pantry and equipment glossaries plus a guide to finding unusual ingredients make the kitchen tested recipes accessible to home cooks everywhere. An ideal reference, The Martha Stewart Cookbook belongs on every kitchen counter in America.

Martha Stewart is the author of thirteen best-selling original books on food, entertaining, gardening, and home restoration, is the chairman and chief executive officer of Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia. She lives in Connecticut, Maine, and on Long Island.

A great book, just like the series. 5 out of 5 stars.
25 of 26 people found this review helpful.

I bought this book at my local book store the other day. I must say it is excellent. It is mostly for non-amateurs, but they can give it a try. It says on the book, a companion to the series. I totally agree. Though you can probably make the projects from the book, it will be much easier to follow along with the specific episode. Nice illustrations. Scaled down plans are included.

If you are a fan of the New Yankee Workshop, then you have to get the book.

Good, detailed, and well explained plans. 4 out of 5 stars.

He's got this book laid out so that each chapter is it's own project. That's a good way to do it to make sure there's enough info to do it right. However, That means that in this relatively fat (expensive) book there are only 10 projects or so. The only project I really liked was the Adirondack chair, the others were too specialized for my simple tastes.

Editorial Review:

The host of PBS's New Yankee Workshop invites readers into his workshop once again to construct beautiful, practical pieces, including a rocking horse, an Adirondack chair, a Chippendale mirror, a garden bench, and other time-honored designs inspired by originals found in preservation societies and museum collections nationwide. Photos and illustrations.

Not the best from Conran 2 out of 5 stars.
6 of 6 people found this review helpful.

Simply disappointing, compared to some of his other books, this one has no substance and very few innovative and practical ideas, I would not recommend this book to anyone.

Terence Conran Storage 2 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

As a fan of TCs 'Ultimate House Book' and 'Bathrooms' titles I was looking forward to a similar standard of book but was left somewhat deflated. Granted, storage is not the sexiest aspect of interior design but this book is situated firmly in the ranks of common sense and failed to ignite the imagination. It is, however, very practical if approaching the issue of storage without having given it any previous though whatsoever. If you have an established interest in the area of interiors you will have come across all of this before. The presentation is as usual excellent but it does not achieve the inspiring standard of the aformentioned titles.

Editorial Review:

Terence Conran, master of interior design, casts his gaze on what is arguably the most intractable home design issue: how to keep your stuff from overwhelming your space. Conran shows how to reduce clutter, edit our belongings, and store them so they are still accessible. Room by room, he breaks down particular storage requirements and approaches, all the while offering glimpses of stunning homes and ingenious storage solutions. Short on space for books? Here are ideas for using your stairway as a library. Love collecting? There are unique ways to display your treasures. Whether you prefer old-fashioned coziness or a clean minimalist sweep, and whether your home is a bachelor pad, family home, or empty nest, this beautifully photographed guide will prove invaluable.

--Nobody does it like Mary-- 5 out of 5 stars.

MARY ENGELBREIT'S HOME COMPANION is a delightful book filled with her charming illustrations and beautifully decorated rooms.

If you're a fan of ME than you'll really enjoy this book. The photographs are good and the book is chock full of uniquely decorated rooms. I honestly have to say that almost every room has something in it that I would like to incorporate into my own home.

There are fifteen chapters and at the end of each a "project" is presented with instructions called "Watch ME Make It." Some of these are: A Tea Towel Pillow, Hand-Painted Picture Frame, and Birdhouse Bookends. Most of the projects seem to be fairly simple to do. To be honest, I don't usually do projects, but I'm very tempted to try to make several of these.

I loved looking at how "various collections" are incorporated into the styles of the different rooms. I'm a bit of a collector myself, and it was a treat for me to notice that some items that I have from my own collections are featured in the pictures.

It may sound odd to say this about a book on decorating, but I found HOME COMPANION to be very uplifting and a joy to read. I think I could live in this book!

Editorial Review:

This book contains fifteen chapters on everything from Kitchens, Tabletops, and Entries, to Cozy Corners, Cheap Tricks, and Odd Sports. The first in a series of books on the Mary Engelbreit look-- certain to be a decorating and lifestyle favorite.

Editorial Review:

No one epitomizes the pursuit of healthy pleasures more than Martha Stewart. And nowhere is this
clearer than at home in her kitchen. Now, the millions of fans who seek her guidance can prepare the food that gives Martha her remarkable energy and vitality. Martha Stewart's Healthy Quick Cook presents an all-new collection of 52 quick, easy menus--with more than 175 sensibly lightened recipes--for the kind of food we want to eat today.
Over the years, almost effortlessly, Martha has changed the way she cooks and eats. With unparalleled style and good sense, she has trimmed the fat and intensified the flavor of her favorite recipes to create meals that are unfailingly delicious, absolutely healthy, and strictly no-nonsense. A wonderfully filling frittata, flavored with sage, "enlightened" with egg whites, and paired with herb-infused garlicky stove-top potatoes, is a terrific low-fat, nutrient-rich meal to begin--or end--the day. Simple, yet no less special, sandwiches and incredible salads of brilliantly matched ingredients--seared tuna burgers splashed with soy sauce and swabbed with fiery wasabi mayonnaise, sugar snap peas mixed with whole mint leaves, and delicate shavings of baby golden beets tossed with fresh basil--reflect Martha's genius for casual yet sophisticated cooking.
Instead of concentrating on calorie counts, fat grams, and sodium content, Martha teaches how to eat well intuitively: how to make a variety of grains, fruits, and vegetables a delicious part of everyday eating; how to create menus that are supremely satisfying and nutritionally sound; even how to indulge a sweet tooth properly by enjoying small portions of such
classic desserts as whisper-thin lemon tarts, ginger cookies, and fruit crisps. And her recipes come from all over the world, making healthy meals as exciting as they are fulfilling.
In her chapters of spring, summer, fall, and winter menus, Martha explains how to use simple low-fat cooking techniques to transform the freshest ingredients of each season into fabulous dishes. You'll find quick grills and sautés of such light delicacies as butterfish, softshell crabs, woodsy portobello mushrooms, and mangoes. There are high-heat roasts of winter root vegetables, succulent poussin, pomegranate-lacquered rack of venison, red snapper--even juicy plums. She uses flavor-raising steam for Brussels sprouts, baby spinach, and halibut packaged in grape leaves--and there's an easy stove-top smoked salmon, too.
This is inspiring food, presented as only Martha Stewart can. This book will change the way you think about healthy cooking--and what you create in your kitchen every day.

Martha Stewart is the author of 12 best-selling books on food, entertaining, gardening, and home renovation. She is chairman and chief executive
officer of Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia. Martha Stewart lives in Connecticut and on Long Island.

Martha Stewart presents a collection of brand-new recipes for the healthful foods that energize her every day. These 52 quick, easy menus represent the effortless style and practicality we have come to expect from Martha. Fun with art and cigars 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

An original and amusing combination of art, cigars and quotes from famous people about cigars. Truly fun to own and display.

Editorial Review:

Edward Hopper, Frida Kahlo, Larry Rivers, and Pablo Picasso are just a few of the diverse artists represented in this elegant little volume who have portrayed the cigar in their paintings and drawings. Each artwork is paired with a clever, relevant quote from the likes of such luminaries as Oscar Wilde, Bertolt Brecht, and Mark Twain. The quintessential art book for the cigar lover, this memorable book should be relished in the same spirit as the artwork--and the subject matter--that it celebrates.
