Great, useful, and not at all cheesy. 5 out of 5 stars.
45 of 46 people found this review helpful.

A great book with very practical and inexpensive ideas for all kinds of homekeeping. I am not as type-A as Martha, but you've got to hand it to her - her books are useful, inspiring and usually quite practical (unless it's a craft project - I mean, PLEASE, like I am going to make my own acorn placesetting things). I only rate it 4 stars because I wish there had been more ideas in the book - her books tend to leave you wanting more ideas since what is presented is usually quite good.

One reviewer says this will be a repeat of things you've seen in the magazine. Probably good advice to avoid the book if you already get the magazine. I don't suscribe to Living, so this was actually a nice surprise. As always, smart design, nice pictures and great & very do-able ideas. I flipped through it in a bookstore and now I am getting it for a better price at Amazon.com.

Editorial Review:

It helps the healthiness both of body and soul to live among beautiful things. --designer William Morris, 1882

Shabby Chic -- the rich, inviting, practical, time-worn style created by one of America's top designers, Rachel Ashwell, is a style of living that reflects the grace and simplicity of another time.

Now you can do more than just dream of living in a Shabby Chic home. You can create one yourself. With invaluable treasure-hunting advice and tips for essential materials, furniture, objects and decorations, you can live a life of simple, but rich, beauty.

With her practiced eye Rachel takes you on a tour of flea markets, antique malls, and a variety of secondhand sales -- estate, tag, yard, church, garage -- to demonstrate how, with a little taste, imagination, work and ingenuity, you can turn trinkets from the past into treasures for today.

As Rachel sifts through the discarded, the crumbling, the shabby, she takes you step by step through her personal process, sharing how you, too, can spot a fabulous buy, repair and alter it, and by following her guideline words -- comfort, function, and beauty -- develop your own distinctive, original look that is down-to-earth yet truly exquisite.

Following her sensible advice you can exchange the anonymity of mass-produced furniture and home accessories for unique, inviting surroundings for a fraction of the cost and decorate comfortable, livable rooms in which family heirlooms blend with flea-market finds and the new combines gracefully with the well worn. Lavishly illustrated with lovely and informative photographs and drawings, Rachel Ashwell's Shabby Chic Treasure Hunting & Decorating Guide shows you how to have the home you've always dreamed of, a place where children's dinners are served on mix-and-match antique plates at a table covered with lace from a renovated curtain set with unironed linen napkins. A space where fresh flowers stand in antique jugs, complementing comfortable furniture covered in crisp white denim that is enhanced with each laundering.

For Rachel, Shabby Chic is not just style. It is a way of living. With her trademark warmth and charm she reveals how she sleeps on embroidered antique linen and dresses in cashmeres and bias-cut silk dresses discovered in vintage clothing shops and flea markets. Throughout, she teaches you how to recognize and appreciate beauty in unlikely and often overlooked places, as well as how to define and refine your individual taste.

Worn damask, relaxed velvets, tea-stained florals, washed-out cotton prints, tattered lace, monogrammed linen....

Comforting colors: celadon, mint and seafoam greens; dusty rose; ivories, creams and faded grays; a touch of pale sky-blue; crisp, clean white....

Faded grandeur: the incomplete, the neglected, the crumbling, the cracked, the mismatched, the wrinkled....

Ruffles, gathers, tucks; scuffs, chips, imperfections; worn moldings, tired elegance, peeling paint....

An appreciation of vintage and history....

This is Shabby Chic

Beautiful book, beautiful projects 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

This was one of the very first pattern books I bought when I had been knitting about year. I found so many projects that I wanted to knit! The book is incredibly gorgeous, and will inspire you to reach for your yarn and needles. I have already finished knitting the Velvet-Trimmed Cardigan for my 3-mo-old and am working on the Beaded Cardigan for my 3-yr-old (although it will NOT be beaded!). I was hoping for more designs for older tots, but what is in there is beautiful, and now I have another baby to knit for!!

If you are a thrifty knitter, or just don't have access to a fine yarn store, I found that Lion Brand Microspun yarn is a perfect substitution for the finer weight Debbie Bliss yarn used on many of the patterns.

I am an advanced beginner, and I don't find the patterns too hard. They are challenging, but definitely doable. Many of the designs are knit on size 2/3 needles, so don't buy this book if you are looking for quick projects. On the other hand, I think that a finer gauge looks better because it is more proportional on a little baby/toddler. Another reviewer mentioned fumbling through the directions. When I have questions, I call our local yarn store. They are always happy to talk me through a new skill.

All in all, this is an incredible book. I would recommend it to anyone who is willing to take a little time to make something beautiful.

Editorial Review:

Top knitwear designer Debbie Bliss presents a collection for newborns that will be cherished and handed down for years to come, from blankets and sweaters to hats and bootees, all using soft, snuggly yarns.

Editorial Review:

Nothing lights up a room like flowers. Whether it's baby's breath draped on a table at a wedding reception, clusters of daffodils in small pots scattered throughout a living room or a bucket of sunflowers on a picnic table, a strategically placed bouquet has the power to create a mood and make us feel special. Unfortunately, most of us don't know how to display flowers properly, and they often end up clumsily thrown together in a vase.

In A Passion for Flowers, Carolyne Roehm teaches readers how to create arrangements that set off a flower's natural beauty. She discusses the overall features of dozens of the most popular flowers and helps readers understand how these elements relate to each other. Though the book is filled with ideas for brightening holidays and special occasions, Roehm stresses that the magic of flowers should be enjoyed year-round. Organized by season to profile the blossoms as they come into their glory, bouquet "recipes" with step-by-step instructions are sprinkled throughout along with special care instructions for more sensitive blooms. Sections detailing containers, conditioning flowers and elements of floral design are included at the end of the book. A Passion for Flowers features 250 breathtaking photographs and is a treasure trove of knowledge and inspiration that will help readers stop and smell the roses every day.

Great sweaters, size variance limited, some ins. unclear 4 out of 5 stars.
66 of 66 people found this review helpful.

The Debbie Bliss styles are wonderful -- however, some are too bulky - especially those for infants. I would have preferred that the patterns included a range of sizes -- only a few do. I have made five sweaters to gauge -- in each case some of the instructions were unclear and I had to anticipate what the author's intentions were. In one particular case, a matching beret was huge -- I knit one and so did a fellow knitter, following the same instructions and using same needle size as the matching sweater. The hats were too large for me -- this hat was supposed to fit a three-year old! My advise to fellow knitters -- really pay attention! And try your gauge over the cable patterns AND whatever stitch the instructions recommend!

spotty information, but very cute designs 3 out of 5 stars.
15 of 15 people found this review helpful.

The patterns in this book are all knitted in flat pieces, on straight needles (usually US #3 with DK weight yarn). This means that there is a lot of sewing to do to finish them.

I've only started one of the projects, but I already found an error: half of Chart 1 for the cow is missing. (I've decided to fill in the chart myself, copying from the photo where necessary. Hey, it's only a cow spot.) The debbie bliss website (debbieblissonline.com) has errata from her patterns, but this mistake isn't on the list. The website has no contact information(!) but I've sent a note to the publisher, St. Martin's.

As another reviewer said, this book has somewhat confusing directions (the style takes some getting used to) and the lack of schematics can be confusing. On the cow, I learned that you have to join the back legs with the slanted, not straight, portions toward the middle. The directions are ambiguous about this point, but if you don't get it right you'll have to frog or dismantle a lot of knitting to correct it.

About half the designs in the book are teddy bears and bunnies (they come in different sizes and wearing different costumes). The other half include some very cute and ingenious designs - a reindeer, a camel with a saddle, anthropomorphic mice and rats, a monkey with a fez, several farm animals, and a "farm set play mat" that includes miniature versions of the cows, sheep, pigs, and piglets. The miniatures are about 4 inches long; the larger size farm animals are 12-16 inches long. (I'm looking forward to making some little sheep out of wool scraps!)

If you buy this book, join me in pestering the publisher about errata - without schematics or clear directions, it can be hard to tell when you've gone wrong.

Editorial Review:

Children of all ages will love the charming knitted toys featured in renowned knitwear designer Bliss' latest imaginative collection. Many of the projects can be completed in a matter of hours, and clear instructions, easy-to-follow charts, and a full-color photo for each original project mean that even less-experienced knitters will have no difficulty following the patterns.

Martha to the rescue! 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

I have been using this book for about five years and it has always been great for looking up basics and easy ways to prepare them. The other day I picked up some lovely Norwegian salmon filets and then fennel was haunting me so I got that too, once I got home this was one of the cook book choices that I had laid out in front of me, and even I was shocked to actually find a recipe called "Salmon with Fennel" on page 232. I usually buy bits and pieces and try to throw them together in an edible way, but this book always comes to my rescue. You can look up virtually any ingredient and find a "correct" standard recipe to make, that ingredient follows up with more options for more varied meals with similar undertones on next page.

The "White corn chowder" on page 141 has been my favorite soup for the past few years, I also made artichokes for the first time using this book, and it was for a room full of hungry guests; that turned out great as well. There are countless yummy potato recipes in here as well; it pleases my little Polish heart to see so much love given to this starch.

This book has so many side dishes that my head is spinning when I try to think about what to make, obviously they are easy recipes, with a handful of ingredients. All I have to do is look up my favorite thing and viola, a whole world of recipes unfolds before me.

This book has following chapters with full detail and dedication of preparation:

- Introduction
- The Pantry
- The Basics
- Hors D'oeuvres
- Eggs
- Breads, Biscuits and Sandwiches
- Soups
- Meat
- Poultry and Game Birds
- Fish and Shellfish
- Vegetables and other side dishes
- Salads
- Potatoes
- Pastas, Grains and Rice
- Entertaining a crowd
- Desserts
- Pies and Tarts
- Ice Cream and Sorbets
- Cakes and Cookies
- Wedding Cakes
- Dips, Sauces and Butters
- Preserves, Vinegars and more
- Beverages

This book is great for looking up basic ways of preparing just about anything, but it has many variations. Many cookbooks will only have 3-4 recipes for Salmon lets say, but this has a few pages. And besides, this can be purchased used for a laughable price, this book pays for itself with even one use.

- Kasia S.

Editorial Review:

The ultimate Martha Stewart recipe collection. All the recipes from Martha's original books--more than 1,400 in all--have been gathered into one convenient reference book for everyday use in the kitchen.

nice pictures 3 out of 5 stars.

Martha Steward is a classic. She is a strong woman that I admire. This book however is lacking substance. I flip through it and so just couple of nice advices.

One of Martha's latest entertaining books 4 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

This book is so much better than Martha's very first entertaining book (called MARTHA STEWART ENTERTAINING). The ideas are up to date and follow the same format as most of Martha's "GOOD THINGS" series.

The reason I give this book four stars instead of five is because of the price. This book is a soft-cover book and in my opinion should have been priced lower by the publishers. I paid full price for this book and probably should have waited until it went on sale. However, if a reader is interested in a book as soon as it first comes out, then thy will have to pay full-price. But, possibly, now that the book has been out for a while, you may be able to find this book at discount, and if so, then it's worth a SALE price.

The photos are inspiring and amazing. The photos themselves will inspire the reader to organize a party. The ideas are seasonal, from Winter to Summer. The recipes are easy to duplicate(in my opinion), although some are not for the average novice.

The art projects are very clever. There are enough craft ideas shown in this book that a reader could find at the very least a few useful and doable projects.

Editorial Review:

In this latest volume in the Good Things With Martha Stewart Living series, you will find dozens of ideas, projects, and recipes to help you entertain more easily and often. Delicious drinks and hors d'oeuvres, simple lighting projects, beautiful centerpieces, clever place cards, creative table coverings, and luscious desserts round out this inspired collection.
