Editorial Review:

Revised and updated periodically, The State of the Nation’s Ecosystems is widely recognized as America’s most comprehensive report on the condition of our lands, waters, and living resources. Like the acclaimed first edition, this second edition provides nonpartisan, scientifically reliable information for policymakers, scientists, journalists, and anyone who is interested in the state of America’s environment.

The State of the Nation’s Ecosystems provides a way to “take the pulse” of America’s environment. It is organized around the nation’s primary ecosystems: farmlands, forests, fresh waters, coasts and oceans, grasslands and shrublands, urban and suburban areas, and the nation as a whole. For each, it identifies what should be measured, counted, and reported so that decision makers and others can understand the changes that are occurring, set priorities for action, and measure whether we are achieving our environmental goals. Conditions are tracked using approximately 100 indicators, agreed upon by hundreds of experts from universities, government agencies, corporations, and environmental organizations. The new report refines the set of indicators and supplies data.

Until its publication, there was no environmental equivalent to the kind of “key economic indicators” that help to gauge the economic health of the nation, like gross domestic product. The State of the Nation’s Ecosystems provides our first set of “key environmental indicators.” It won’t eliminate differences of opinion about environmental policy, but it will provide a common set of data to inform the debate as well as a common yardstick for measuring the effectiveness of our actions. Most importantly, it will provide much-needed assistance in setting our future agenda.

This book covers first wave and second wave of envoronmentalism. First wave is the initial response to the industrialisation. IT is expressed first by poets and writers such as wordsworth, ruskin, morris and carpenter. They gave message of simple life.Saint Gandhi gave the best known aphorism 'the world has enough for everybody's need but not enough for everybody's greed'. It is expressed secondly by ideology of scientific conservation. Here George Perkins,Marsh and Dietrich Brandis were forefront for scientific movement.Thirdly there is wilderness idea.It is the conservation of wild species and wild animals. John Muir is of the opinon that 'nature had a right to be cared for regardless of anybody's bank balance and any counrries gposs national product.Aldo Lopold was in favour of maintaining diverse flora and fauna. There are three other envoronmentalist as Patrick Geddes who gave a ohrase 'carboniferous capitalism' for the dependence of industrial city on fossil fuels and tremendous pollution. Lewis Mumford, american historian wished that society would restore three disturbed equilibrium: equilibrium between city and village;the equilibrium in population by balancing birth and death rates;the equilibrium between humans and nature.Radhachand Mukherjee social scientist insisted that any social group must be considered in relation to the interwoven chain of biotic communities. Second wave of environmentalism was started from 1962.After world war II America wasknown as 'affluent society' the period was known as 'development decade' but here ecological constraint to economical growth was regarded irrevelent so the period was known as 'ecological innocence'. After this phase, there is actual mass movement took place. It was stimulated by the book'Silent Spring' by Rachael Carson . It explained that there are intimate and essential relations between planta and plants;between plants and other plants;between plants and animals, that nature was in sum, an intricate web of life whose interwoven strands lead from microbes to man. In America there is wilderness movement known as 'Deep Ecology',then there is German green movement,Narmada bachao andolan and chipko'hug a tree' movement in India. In Thailand, there is ordination ceremony to protest forests. In Nigeria, movement fof survival of ogoni people and territories. In Kenya,Green belt movement. In Brazil,AGAPAN environmental initiative and chico mendes labour organiser promoted ecolgy and justice. Lastly it gives about international organisation such as world wildlife fund [WWF] in assisi and UNCED held at stokholm in 1972 and at Rio de janero in 1992.

Editorial Review:

Amstat News asked three review editors to rate their top five favorite books in the September 2003 issue. Statistical Methods for Detection and Quantification of Environmental Contamination was among those chosen.

This groundbreaking volume describes the statistical theory that underlies the detection and quantification of environmental pollution both in the laboratory and in the field. It presents the foundation of relating measured concentrations to true concentrations and the development of intervals of uncertainty for true concentrations, and it presents a comprehensive review of the problem of estimating thresholds at which detection and quantification decisions can be made reliably.

The authors demonstrate the use of analytical measurements in making environmental impact decisions and in comparing environmental data to regulatory standards and naturally occurring background concentrations. Taking the next step in a major evolution in the way environmental impact decisions are made, Statistical Methods for Detection and Quantification of Environmental Contamination:

  • Presents statistical methods that allow the earliest possible detection and quantification of contaminants
  • Describes procedures applicable to all environmental constituents
  • Covers numerous state-of-the-art approaches
  • Includes case studies demonstrating practical applications of these approaches

An indispensable handbook for scientists and engineers involved in environmental monitoring programs, this book is also an important resource for public health officials, waste facility managers, regulators, statisticians, and analytical chemists.

Great Reference for Practical Answers 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

Am a novice hydrogeologist and was in search of answers for a bedrock pump test I had just performed. Specifically, wanted to interpret drawdown curves obtained from observation wells. Sara's book gave so many useful examples and how these curves were derived. He gives several fracture pattern profiles with the drawdown curves to match each situation from various pump tests.

His whole Chapter 6 "Fractured Rock Assessments" is packed with information, particularly from testing and analysis that he has performed. He was an engineering and environmental geologist in the private sector, so the text is given from the "consulting geologist" standpoint and not from an academic standpoint, as so many of the familiar groundwater textbooks (e.g. Freeze and Cherry, Fetter, and D.K. Todd).

I've only just scratched the surface of this book, but already it has paid for itself. Am sure there are many other useful tidbits for the consulting geologist yet to be found in this "doorstop" of a book (it's huge in size! -- it dwarfs the other old standby, Driscoll's Groundwater and Wells).

There are typos and grammatical errors (it needed a keener editor's eye), but the points come through clearly and this book is jammed with information - we can forgive him - for sharing so much helpful information.

Editorial Review:

Completely revised and updated, the Second Edition of Site Assessment and Remediation Handbook provides coverage of new procedures and technologies for an expanded range of site investigations. With over 700 figures, tables, and flow charts, the handbook is a comprehensive resource for engineers, geologists, and hydrologists conducting site investigation, and a one-stop, technical reference for environmental attorneys.

Editorial Review:

This easy-to-understand introduction emphasizes the areas of probability theory and statistics that are important in environmental monitoring, data analysis, research, environmental field surveys, and environmental decision making. It communicates basic statistical theory with very little abstract mathematical notation, but without omitting important details and assumptions. Topics include Bayes' Theorem, geometric distribution, computer simulation, histograms and frequency plots, maximum likelihood estimation, the tail exponential method, Bernoulli processes, Poisson processes, diffusion and dispersion of pollutants, normal distribution, confidence intervals, and stochastic dilution; gamma, chi-square, and Weibull distributions; and the two- and three-parameter lognormal distributions. The author also presents the Statistical Theory of Rollback, which allows data analysts and regulatory officials to estimate the effect of different emission control strategies on environmental quality frequency distributions.Assuming only a basic knowledge of algebra and calculus, Environmental Statistics and Data Analysis provides an outstanding reference and collection of statistical procedures for analyzing environmental data and making accurate environmental predictions.

Editorial Review:

We know certain chemicals cause problems in the workplace. The issues now are: Where do they occur in the workplace? How can we best evaluate them? What are the procedures for dealing with them safely? Many books simply define the problem and tell you that you need a program. Air Sampling and Industrial Hygiene gives you a guide to air sampling protocols from start to finish. The book presents sampling technology updated with today's tools - such as microcircuitry and remote sensing. The authors emphasize an interdisciplinary approach to understanding how air monitoring can adequately report current environmental conditions associated with outdoor media, indoor remediation efforts, proximal equipment, interior line monitoring, and the interrelationship of ventilation parameters. In addition to providing the how-tos of sampling, this guide covers the basics of chemical risk assessment, biological assessment, engineering evaluation of mechanical system design criteria, and chemical or process engineering hazard assessments. It presents the information using text, text outlines, graphics, and pictures - including cross sections of instrumentation and side bars to elaborate on complex concepts.Faulty readings caused by poor sampling techniques can be very costly. This book provides the how-tos for making design engineering and on-site decisions as to instrumentation selection and scheduled usage. Air Sampling and Industrial Hygiene Engineering will allow you to complete the sampling process systematically and correctly from initial suspicions to the use of obtained results.

Excellent Book! 5 out of 5 stars.

Excellent book for air pollution engineering students, consultants, industry managers, and regulatory agency staff. Highly recommended.

like a puzzle 3 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

This book is very entertaining because in order to solve the problems, you have to look for the data that you need all over the place. It's like a puzzle. It has a lot of information very poorly distributed, Very poorly. I think this book needed an editor to actually do his job and well, edit it. Other than that its a good one.

Editorial Review:

This text covers the whole air pollution field, from an engineering perspective. The principal topics are control devices and their theory. The book uses many more examples than other texts to help the student see the magnitudes of important quantities and to show and practice the practical application of theoretical treatments presented. The other half is devoted to topics that form some of the background for the selection of such devices, i.e., air pollution effects, the structure of U.S. air pollution law, atmospheric models, etc.
