PWM for Power Converters 5 out of 5 stars.
6 of 6 people found this review helpful.

This is not the type of book with practical applications. The book is rather heavy in the Math department. By page 57, one could find themselves knee deep in mathematical equations. However, this is an excellent text book about Harmonic Distortion and PWM Modulation Techniques. No designer of Rectifiers, Inverters, or Motor Controllers should be without it. This is an excellent reference book.

Editorial Review:

* The first single volume resource for researchers in the field who previously had to depend on separate papers and conference records to attain a working knowledge of the subject.
* Brings together the field's diverse approaches into an integrated and comprehensive theory of PWM

Good book, the title covers what u will see inside 4 out of 5 stars.
8 of 11 people found this review helpful.

I have an old edition of this book (very old, back to 60s I think, since no year provided). The list of contents include:
I. Theory and design of steam turbines
1.1. Intro
1.2. Flow of steam through a turbine stage
1.3. Concept from gas dynamics
1.4. Determination of nozzle and blade
1.5. Energy losses
1.6. Single stage turbines
1.7. Multistage turbine
1.8. Turbine performance at varying load
1.9. Governor and governor gears
1.10 Contructional detail of multistage condensing turbines
1.11 back pressure and mixed pressure turb.

II. Design and Construction of Steam Turbine Component
2.1. Constructon of cylinder and their detail
2.2 Contruction turbine rotors and their comp.

Overall it gives the good reference. I don't give 5 stars since:
1. I don't have the latest edition, so I don't know what kind of update that they made.
2. I have don't have any time to compare with other books with same topic, the closest one I got is about turbomachinary.

Editorial Review:

This volume---originally published in the Soviet Union---is intended as a text-book for the students of technical colleges as well as engineers and designers specialising in turbine building. Basic theoretical concepts of the thermodynamic processes of stationary steam turbines have been dealt with in detail. Variable load operation of these turbines has also been considered. The reader will find here enough material concerning the basic concepts of gas dynamics as applied to steam turbines as well as design and construct ion of steam turbines and their details with regard to mechanical strength. Considerable space has been devoted to the description of turbines of various manufacture. The book contains a profusion of tables, diagrams and illustrations which, it is hoped, would enable the reader to acquire a better understanding of the theory and design of steam turbines.

The book is so good you can teach yourself 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 6 people found this review helpful.

This textbook is one of the best I've ever used. Incropera and DeWitt do a great job of explaining convection, conduction, and radiation. I have heard that the mass transfer portion of the book is lacking however, I am an ME major so its not an issue. The covering of conduction is especially good, it goes into great detail math wise although its well presented so you don't have to be a mathematical wizard to follow along. The book goes into a little bit of heat exchanger design, not very much but its a good introduction. If your instructor requires this book for your heat transfer class consider yourself very fortunate.

Awesome book, very easy to follow 5 out of 5 stars.

Not useful for DIY install 2 out of 5 stars.
11 of 11 people found this review helpful.

I bought this book thinking it would be helpful with a geothermal heating system I was planning to install. The book appears to be no more than a translated product guide for various models of geothermal heat pumps that the author manufactures in Germany. There were some useful equations for various heat calculations but nothing really all that useful. I returned the book.

Editorial Review:

With shortages of fossil energy, especially oil and natural gas, and heavy biomass energy use occurring in both developed and developing countries, a major focus has developed worldwide on renewable energy systems. Renewable energy systems include wind power, biomass, photovoltaics, hydropower, solar thermal, thermal ponds, and biogas.

Currently, a heavy focus is on biofuels made from crops, such as corn, sugarcane, and soybeans, for use as renewable energy sources. Wood and crop residues also are being used as fuel. Though it may seem beneficial to use renewable plant materials for biofuel, the use of crop residues and other biomass for biofuels raises many concerns about major environmental problems, including food shortages and serious destruction of vital soil resources.

All renewable energy systems need to be investigated because humankind has only about 40 years of oil and gas reserves remaining. There is a 50 to 100 year supply of coal resources in the ground, but coal will become increasingly difficult to extract and will greatly increase the global warming threat.

Serious energy conservation and research on viable renewable energy technologies are needed. This book considers the effectiveness and economics of several renewable energy technologies of current interest, including biofuels, solar and wind.

Editorial Review:

Renewable Energy (RE) sources differ from conventional sources in that, generally they cannot be scheduled, they are much smaller than conventional power stations and are often connected to the electricity distribution system rather than the transmission system.  The integration of such time variable ‘distributed’ or ‘embedded’ sources into electricity networks requires special consideration.

This new book addresses these special issues and covers the following:

  • The characteristics of conventional and RE generators with particular reference to the variable nature of RE from wind, solar, small hydro and marine sources over time scales ranging from seconds to months
  • The power balance and frequency stability in a network with increasing inputs from variable sources and the technical and economic implications of increased penetration from such sources  with special reference to demand side management
  • The conversion of energy into electricity from RE sources and the type and characteristics of generators used
  • The requirement to condition the power from RE sources and the type and mode of operation of the power electronic converters used to interface such generators to the grid
  • The flow of power over networks supplied from conventional plus RE sources with particular reference to voltage control and protection
  • The economics and trading of ‘green’ electricity in national and international deregulated markets
  • The expected developments in RE technology and the future shape of power systems where the penetration from RE sources is large and where substantial operational and control benefits will be   derived from extensive use of power electronic interfaces and controllers

The text is designed to be intelligible to readers who have little previous knowledge of electrical engineering. The more analytical electrical aspects are relegated to an Appendix for readers who wish to gain a more in depth  understanding. The book’s flexible structure makes its accessible to the general engineer or scientists but also caters for readers with a non-scientific background. Economists, planners and environmental specialists will find parts of the book informative.
