Good Book, but... 4 out of 5 stars.
19 of 20 people found this review helpful.

The book is good to see lots of pictures of steam plant equipment and a bit is given explaining what the equipment does, but I found the "Steam & Diesel Power Plant Operators Examinations" book much more powerful to pass fireman and engineers exams, including employment interviews! I suggest to buy both of these great books!

Steam Plant Operation 5 out of 5 stars.
8 of 8 people found this review helpful.

The best book on the market for training of power plant operators. Revisions keep up with the field. Have been using this book for training power plant opreators to optain their Massachusetts Stationary Engineers and Firemen's licenses, for over 15 years.

Editorial Review:

You'll want to have the update of this classic guide to steam power plant design, installation, operation, and maintenance. It is an essential tool for preparing you for local operating license exams. The 7th Edition continues the tradition of presenting information on complex steam power plant systems in a format which can be quickly and easily understood. All major power plant systems are illustrated and described with emphasis on operating characteristics and on the effects on plant economics.

Great book for future electrician! 4 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

I bought this book while in Iraq to study before I get out of the army and try to get under an apprenticeship. This book has helped me learn a LOT about the trade of inside wireman and the basic fundamentals of electricity from fomulas to installation of panel boxes to wiring an entire house and to which lamps will give the best lighting effect in a room. I am really looking forward to learning more about the trade. So far I have read it once and am already half way thru for my second time around. I highly recommend this book however, what I have learned about electrical is only from this book so I do not have a comparison.

Editorial Review:

This well-established guide to electrical distribution and utilization systems is written from the perspective of someone designing and installing electrical wiring and provides a thorough overview of the National Electrical Code. Important safety systems are addressed and explained, as are techniques for making the best use of electrical tools. In particular, residential and farm wiring is addressed, including instructions for how to select service equipment, modern lighting, and common motors. Extensive coverage is also given to commercial wiring, with a discussion of how to select wires to match anticipated loads so detailed that it will appear as an example in the 2005 National Electrical Code. Throughout, advice is accessible enough for the amateur and meticulous enough for a professional.

Editorial Review:

What's the solution to the world's growing energy problem?

PERFECT POWER

Electric usage is rising. Fuel costs are rocketing. Blackouts are happening more frequently. Why? Because our electrical power system--built on a vast network of resources including nuclear energy, natural gas, water, and coal--has become woefully outdated, increasingly expensive, and dangerously fragile. We need to change the current system, and we need to do it now.

Written by business visionary and former Motorola chairman Robert Galvin, Perfect Power shows us how to create a “perfect” system that can deliver power where needed, at an astonishing reliability standard of 99.9999999 percent. By super-charging the “Six Sigma” concepts that Galvin developed as the founder and CEO at Motorola, we can

  • Meet the energy reliability and quality needs of the Digital Age
  • Generate new goods and services that create jobs, empower consumers, and lower energy cost
  • Eliminate wasteful spending on our electrical infrastructure that can be used for peak power needs
  • Facilitate local, regional, and, ultimately, national energy independence
  • Fundamentally reduce the impact of energy on the environment
  • Invest in the microgrid revolution

Energy providers and policy makers will reinvent today's centralized power systems and integrate them with new, efficient “microgrids." Investors and entrepreneurs will spot tomorrow's hottest technologies. Consumers will demand change from “the powers that be.” And environmentalists will take advantage of cleaner, greener energy sources available.

We have the power to fulfill our energy needs, fix our old systems, forge ahead with new ideas, and fuel our dreams. It's Perfect Power.

Editorial Review:

"Zoom goes zero to sixty in nothing flat. It's an exciting ride into the future of the world's favorite physical object, the automobile."
-Gregg Easterbrook, author of THE PROGRESS PARADOX

"Zoom offers a new way to think about cars and energy that's key to understanding the forces shaping business today. It's smart, well-informed and insightful--exactly what one would expect from two of The Economist's best journalists."
-Chris Anderson, author of THE LONG TAIL

"Zoom puts oil in its sights and squeezes off one telling round after another. Car lovers will see a sunny future with other fuels; OPEC a steadily darkening twilight."
-R. James Woolsey, VP, Booz Allen Hamilton; former Director of Central Intelligence

"An incisive analysis of the end of the petroleum age, including all its repercussions and opportunities."
-Vinod Khosla, Khosla Ventures

"Oil is the problem. Cars are the solution."
Those two simple sentences by the authors of Zoom define the scope of their illuminating and important book, an examination of a transformation in business and culture that is occurring before our eyes.
We are living in the midst of a Great Awakening. People are seeking environmentally-sound alternatives to gas guzzlers. Detroit's reign is over. Oil companies, despite their billion-dollar profits, could be on the brink of extinction if they don't adapt. And citizens, all too aware that these industries have lobbied politicians into gridlock over energy policy, are mobilizing to support leaders who advocate new policies.
In Zoom, Iain Carson and Vijay V. Vaitheeswaran, award-winning correspondents for The Economist, show why and how geopolitical and economic forces are compelling the linked industries of oil and autos to change as never before.
Drawing on years of industry research-including dozens of interviews with motor and energy executives, top policymakers, and latter-day Fords and Edisons-Carson and Vaitheeswaran explain:
-How Toyota became the world's largest automaker through innovation and superior performance.
-Why American politicians have, for decades failed to address our energy issues and global warming-and how grassroots movements, along with individual entrepreneurs, innovators, and outsiders, are making real reform possible.
-How these Green revolutionaries are creating new products powered by hydrogen, electricity, bio-fuels, and digital technology.
As political leaders debate our energy, environmental and economic future, Zoom offers a lucid and visionary portrait of what that future could be. Anyone planning to vote will find compelling truth in its assertions and conclusions.

Heat Transfer review 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 2 people found this review helpful.

It is what I expected. Heat Transfer all in one reference.

Schaum's Outline of Theory and Problems of Heat Transfer 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

I found the Schaum's Outline of Theory and Problems of Heat Transfer, 2nd Ed. a helpful addition to my small collection of radiation heat transfer references. It has a unique worked example of the direct conversion from an Oppenheim radiosity network (RC analogy) to a radiation exchange factor (script-F) network.

I cannot comment on the conduction or convection sections because I have not yet used them.

Editorial Review:

If you want top grades and thorough understanding of heat transfer, this powerful study tool is the best tutor you can have! It takes you step-by-step through the subject and gives you 269 accompanying related problems with fully worked solutions. You also get 92 additional problems to solve on your own, working at your own speed. (Answers at the back show you how you're doing.) Famous for their clarity, wealth of illustrations and examples, and lack of dreary minutie, Schaum's Outlines have sold more than 30 million copies worldwide--and this guide will show you why!

A Tough Read Indeed! 3 out of 5 stars.
2 of 3 people found this review helpful.

This is obviously a well-researched book and perhaps even well-written, but it is a tough read indeed!

I bought this book in order to better understand "Hubbert's Peak" and the issue of oil and the impending oil shortage predicted by so many analyst.

The author does a very good job of explaining Hubbert's peak - in the first chapter of the book no less. But after that it was rough sailing and I found my interesting waning as Deffeyes discussed oil traps, drilling methods, and rate plots.

So I ended up skimming those chapters and jumping to the portion of the book dealing with the future of fossil fuels, alternative energy sources and a new outlook. Unfortunately, the pickings were a bit slim, with the author devoting only 16 of the books 189 pages to these topics.

There are probably better books out there for the layman interested in learning about the world's impending oil crisis.

Editorial Review:

In 2001, Kenneth Deffeyes made a grim prediction: world oil production would reach a peak within the next decade--and there was nothing anyone could do to stop it. Deffeyes's claim echoed the work of geophysicist M. King Hubbert, who in 1956 predicted that U.S. oil production would reach its highest level in the early 1970s. Though roundly criticized by oil experts and economists, Hubbert's prediction came true in 1970.

In this updated edition of Hubbert's Peak, Deffeyes explains the crisis that few now deny we are headed toward. Using geology and economics, he shows how everything from the rising price of groceries to the subprime mortgage crisis has been exacerbated by the shrinking supply--and growing price--of oil. Although there is no easy solution to these problems, Deffeyes argues that the first step is understanding the trouble that we are in.
