Excellent book - especially for the beginning model engineer. All the engines are the "wobbler" type. Boiler plans seem adequate. The last project is a locomotive after the style used in many logging railroads in the United States in the early 1900's.

This book details the construction of a range of simple miniature steam engines and boilers. The projects, each of which can be completed with only a basic workshop, range from a single-acting oscillator to more sophisticated twin-cylinder double-acting engines and a variety of boilers. A final project brings together engine and boiler for a simple steam railway locomotive. These projects are a perfect introduction to model engineering and an enjoyable exercise for the more experienced engineer or those who wish to pass on their hobby to a younger generation.

Stan Bray is an experienced craftsman in engineering and metalworking; among his previous books is Metalworking: Tools and Techniques.

Guiding Lites for Boiler Operators 3 out of 5 stars.

This book provides a good basic understanding of boiler operations on a wide variety of boilers. It is geared towards the novice operator or for as a learning guide. The depth is somewhat limited and is not supported by any theory. The author describes the overall process but does not get into optimizing the boiler, which every operator should do.

This reading is not meant to be entertaining or for light reading, but a study guide for the operator...

A must have book to analyize problems with water treatment. 5 out of 5 stars.

This book is a need item to help trouble shoot problems with boiler, DA tanks, condensate return tanks,pumps, and piping. If you can see the problem, you will probably see a picture of the problem in this book along with what caused it...and in color 95 percent of the time. It has been a real life saver, literlly. You gotta have this book even if you only use it once..it could save your life, or your building/s. Try it ..you will like it. My instructor in 2 grade class was so impressed it got one.

I purchased this book because of Mr. Ganapathy's fame in the subject area and the attractive title of the book. My primary interest is in waste heat boiler design in petroleum refining applications. My comments here pertains to this area only.

The book gives a very brief survey of various types of boilers and HRSG's and their operations. The chapter on "Heat Transfer Equipment Design and Performance" offers simple published correlations to estimate parameters in boiler and HRSG designs. They are good for rough performance check but I will not use them in actual designs. In fact, I doubted Mr. Ganopathy uses these simple correlations in his own designs.

Mr. Ganapathy, despite his extensive experience in the subject area, did not spend much ink on critical design issues such as the danger of thermal induced dryout and differential thermal expansion of different components and design methodologies to avoid them.

This is a good book for someone who wishes to gain a basic understanding of boilers and HRSG's. It has little value for those who are in the business of actual designing such equipments.

Good Book, but... 4 out of 5 stars.

The book is good to see lots of pictures of steam plant equipment and a bit is given explaining what the equipment does, but I found the "Steam & Diesel Power Plant Operators Examinations" book much more powerful to pass fireman and engineers exams, including employment interviews! I suggest to buy both of these great books!
