This book is Exquisite! 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

I purchased this book earlier in the spring. I look at it almost everyday. I have taught myself how to hand piece and I never for one moment thought that I could. This book is a treasure, if you have the patience to teach yourself and have this book, you will learn to do exquisite work. I also purchased the CD from Amazon and have used it but not as much as the book-it would all depend on your individual learning style. The CD does a wonderful job of explaining and showing you how to create the stitches; I enjoying having both but now find myself using the book more than the CD. I also purchsed the perfect piecer from Jinny Beyer's site (althought at the time I am writing this Amazon has one listed)and this tool is a MUST HAVE if you are going to learn to hand piece in my opinion.

The book is beautiful, well written, includes some historical prespective (but not too much) you will not be sorry you purchased this book.

Editorial Review:

Celebrating today's surge of interest in hand crafts, this book introduces new quilters to a simple yet versatile set of techniques that allows them to create sensational quilts entirely by hand. A world-class designer and extraordinarily skilled quilter, Jinny Beyer demonstrates everything from threading a needle to piecing perfect points. Beginning with the basic running stitch, quilters quickly move on to joining two, then four patches, making stars and compasses, setting in pieces, and stitching curves. With each new skill, quilters are invited to begin the next section of a quilt designed especially for beginners-encouraging a "sew-as-you-learn" approach with each of the 10 quilting projects. The quilting stitch is simply and clearly explained, and detailed photographs illustrate how neat, even lines of stitching are achieved.

Quilts of Virginia, 1607 - 1899 5 out of 5 stars.
7 of 7 people found this review helpful.

I have almost every State Documentation book published, and this is one of the best. There are wonderful stories that go with every quilt. The pictures are in gorgeous color. Loved every page.

Editorial Review:

This new book anticipates Virginias 400th anniversary in 2007 by presenting over 270 beautiful historic quilts and ephemera in over 430 color and vintage photographs. From quilted armor of the 17th century to crazy quilts of the 19th century, these personal family and museum treasures include homespun work of slaves and fancy work of freed women and First Ladies. The eight Virginia-born U.S. presidents are each represented here, with work from George Washingtons great great grandmother to quilting by Mrs. Woodrow Wilson. The contents derive from the study of more than 3,000 quilts statewide that were meticulously examined by the Virginia Consortium of Quilters' Documentation Project. This book is an important contribution to quilting history and Virginia heritage, and will be inspirational today for enthusiastic sewers everywhere.

Well worth it! 5 out of 5 stars.

I bought this book with the intent of it being a gift for someone interesteed in collecting "art books" who also likes fiber arts and quilting. I ended up keeping the book as I couldn't bear to give it away after opening it! It is Very readable, the excersies are understandable and useful, and by the end of each chapter you have a firm grasp of that aspect of 2 dimensional surface design. Several friends are waiting to borrow it from my library, but its one that I'll keep track of.

Editorial Review:

Designing Tessellations opens the door for quilters to thousands of new and exciting patterns by showing them how to create tessellations--designs made up of the repeated use of seemingly complex but deceptively simple shapes that interlock perfectly to flow across a quilt. Inspired by artist M. C. Escher, Jinny Beyer introduces quilters to the fascinating world of symmetry and then clearly shows how to experiment with shapes and images to create sensational, tessellating designs. Quilters will not only learn how to produce interlocking geometric patterns, but also will learn how easy it is to create true-to-life images of birds, fish, butterflies, and more in the style of Escher. Features include: - More than 125 color photographs and 2,000 step-by-step color drawings - Dozens of quilts featuring tessellated designs

Cute and fun ideas 4 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

Oh - these are too cute! First, there were fabric boxes and bowls - which I love! Now, try your hand at fabric balls.

Let me admit my bias - I like cute, clever projects. Jinny Beyer has done the math and laid it all out in clear steps. Plus, you can use up all those fabric scraps that you just can't throw away!

There are more than a dozen projects in this book and they are a good variety on this one theme. Since this book is by Jinny Beyer, the color schemes are inspiring and some of the projects make good use of border prints.

What will you do with fabric balls? Use them in home decor, for the children in your life, as cute baby gifts and more. The designs start simple and get sophisticated. The temari style balls would make a lovely gift, too.

Editorial Review:

Fun and quick to make, fabric balls are great for indoor play, for home-decor accents, for holiday ornaments, or as soft and cuddly toys for babies. The ten designs featured in this book include complete step-by-step directions and color diagrams to show how to construct and color each project. Easy-to-use templates take the math out of even the most complex of the designs, enabling crafters to create dazzling patchwork patterns that match up beautifully.

Editorial Review:

Drawn from her own experience in teaching and making quilts, Jinny Beyer's "Master Palette" system is great for quilters who want to develop color confidence quickly and easily without studying formal color theory. Quilters will learn how to create a smooth-flowing palette with no jumps from dark to light or one color to the next, and will also learn the secrets to "coloring" a quilt by shading colors and fabrics or scattering them throughout a quilt. Practice exercises help crafters combine colors again and again until they can confidently choose colors for any project. Includes eight quilt patterns and templates that encourage quilters to stretch their palette, handy eight-step guide to creating a multi-color, multiprint quilt, 128 color swatches, two master palettes, and eight-course outline and suggestions for color teachers. Jinny Beyer is one of the best-known and most highly respected fabric designers in the quiltmaking industry. Her signature line of fabrics, produced by RJR Fashion Fabrics, is sold throughout the world. Home: Great Falls, VA

Learn to draft your own patterns in any size! 5 out of 5 stars.
26 of 26 people found this review helpful.

This is one of my all-time favorite reference books. Jinny Beyer shows you how to take any block and break it into smaller units (4-patch, 9-patch, Mariner's Compass, etc). Instead of "copying" that pattern you admire in a quilt magazine (in the size THEY give you), you'll learn to enlarge or shrink it to the size YOU want! Every new quilter should learn to draft patterns...and many old quilters need a refresher's course. This book takes the mystery out of the math!

Super collection of patchwork blocks 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

This book is not about presenting you with a series of pre-written pattern recipes so that you can make up a quilt without having to do the math. You are presented with a huge collection of beautifully illustrated patchwork blocks and instructions on how to use them to draft your own quilt pattern. Photographs of antique quilts and quilts made by Jinny Beyer are sprinkled throughout the book and will have you itching to get to a quilt shop so that you can get started on a new quilt!

Editorial Review:

This classic reference explains the revolutionary paper-folding system for creating original or traditional geometric designs. Its simple approach will free any artisan who works with such designs-from weaver to woodworker-from manufactured templates and complicated mechanical drafting methods.

Start Christmas projects now with Jinny's wonderful book! 5 out of 5 stars.

If you want to make some easy things for Christmas, this is the book for quilters (and non-quilters alike) to check out. I have it and love it! I've also bought it for Christmas gifts. (The book looks pretty on the coffeetable at Christmas, too.) Jinny shows you how to make table runners, placemats, tree skirts, wearable skirts, etc., using border prints. She makes Colonial Williamsburg-like decorations using pine cones, apples, and nuts--and from things she finds in her backyard. You can almost smell the apple cider simmering on the fireplace. There are instructions for beautiful quilts as well. Her old-fashioned country home is decorated with these quilts for the holidays, as well as wonderful antiques. It was fun to take a peek inside Jinny's home...one of the biggest names in the quilting world! If you like quilts and Christmas, you'll love this book!

Editorial Review:

In this charming volume, Quilter's Hall of Fame member and 15-million-yard-selling fabric designer Jinny Beyer shares holiday cheer, step-by-step instructions, patterns, and color selection tips for quilts, sweaters, wreaths, and other delightful holiday decorations.

A must for all quilters! 5 out of 5 stars.
20 of 21 people found this review helpful.

This is a book for the beginner as well as the advanced quilter. It's a wonderful reference book on quilt blocks. Use it as a springboard for designing a contemporary quilt or for creating your own heirloom.

2nd quilt book I ever bought. 4 out of 5 stars.
13 of 13 people found this review helpful.

The first was Ruby McKim's.
I made a lot of single blocks out of this book, I think friends still have denim--lots of variations on indigo--pillows made at the time.

I learned how to analyze a block, draft the pattern.
This book won't help you with the nuts and bolts of sewing.

It won't help you visualize a whole quilt. But I expect that this book still holds up as a block book. Everyone needs at least one. After I worked with it for a while I forever lost my shyness about drafting patterns in almost any size, three inches to 25.

Editorial Review:

The blocks and borders in this comprehensive collection of patchwork designs are not only indexed by their various names but also organized according to their type of design and illustrated in detail. A transparent plastic grid sheet is also included.

Editorial Review:

Challenging herself to find a way to incorporate into a new quilt a paisley design that had all the right colors but whose pattern was too pretty to obscure, noted quilter and teacher Jinny Beyer was inspired to invent the unusual and striking soft-edge piecing technique. Resembling the kaleidoscope quilt, this innovative approach allows the quilter to add a unique dimension to more traditional patchwork by adapting portions of the block to accommodate the geometry of elegant and colorful prints. By utilizing bold border prints and fabrics with strongly hued allover patterns, Beyer lets the pattern of each material dictate the boundaries of the pieced design. This beautifully presented book explains the method clearly, and the photos do justice to Beyer's exquisite sense of color and wonderful design abilities--her fabrics speak eloquently. The intricate appearance of the finished product belies the basic simplicity of the technique; somewhat more difficult may be the ability to look at fabrics in this new way to invent fresh design possibilities. But a general acquaintance with quilting and piecing techniques combined with the help of this terrific book should be enough to produce a truly dynamic quilt. --Amy Handy
