Editorial Review:

Martha Stewart's Hors d'Oeuvres is classic Martha--it's all about food, glorious food. Not just any food, either--it's about hors d'oeuvres. And you know how much Martha loves these tasty little nibbles. This book presents more than 150 recipes organized into 13 sample menus tailored to a wide variety of events. There's a Christmas cocktail party, with a Savory Wreath and Skewered Tortellini with Roasted Garlic Garnish; Seafood at the Beach featuring Goujonettes of Sole and Grilled Scallops with Chervil and Fennel; and Oriental Cocktails in the Parlor with Chinese Pearl Balls and Tea-Smoked Eggs. The recipes are garnished with plenty of advice--from useful tips on make-ahead dishes to the "I wish" advice like "it is difficult to ensure perfect service with fewer than four [servers] for 24 to 36 guests." The book is also useful for picking and choosing hors d'oeuvres for your own events. Even if you aren't planning a "grand and elegant" party for hundreds, you may well enjoy the recipe for Clams with Golden Caviar and Italian Parsley, Saucisson en Croƻte, or Corn Muffins with Smoked Turkey. The book is, predictably, full of beautiful photographs--so whether you're really planning a "valentines and champagne" party for 50, an intimate tea party in the kitchen, or just indulging in a little gastronomy, Martha Stewart's Hors d'Oeuvres will please Marthaphiles and general readers alike. --C.B. Editorial Review:

Martha Stewart's Christmas remains a classic cooking and decorating guide for the Christmas season. The book can be viewed as an elaborate timeline for preparing for December 25--indeed, Martha claims the book was written and photographed in "real time" from the day after Thanksgiving through Christmas Day. Along the way, Martha teaches you how to make plum pudding, 24 different types of cookies, and a holiday party menu featuring cassoulet for 100. For Christmas Day dinner, a towering croquembouche is perhaps the finest culinary feature of the menu, which features roast ducklings with wild rice, chestnut, and cranberry dressing. Martha also provides tips on decorating trees, making ornaments, gift-wrapping papers, and making beautiful wreaths and topiaries. There's even advice on making up gift baskets of the cookies, conserves, and puddings that you've created yourself. Martha herself admits that "it's true, we did get carried away"--she creates an elaborate gingerbread mansion--but most of the recipes and crafts are easy to follow and produce great results. Martha Stewart's Christmas is a real gift. C.B. Delaney

Editorial Review:

If the words “classic Christmas” make images of Christmas cactus, fruitcake, and roast turkey dance in your head, then Classic Crafts and Recipes for the Holidays will make all of your yuletide dreams come true.

Arranged in ten chapters with such names as “Cranberries,” “Nuts,” “Citrus,” “Leaves,” and “Pinecones,” this festive compendium of holiday ideas and recipes is certain to show you how to make every Christmas one to remember. In “Winter Berries,” berries are used to make wreaths, garlands, and centerpieces. In its own chapter, fruitcake has been reinterpreted so it will never run the risk of being left uneaten. “Leaves” shows how to make keepsake gifts out of embossed leaves and cards, and throughout the book there are clever packaging and wrapping ideas to suit every taste and budget.

From now on, when you think of a classic Christmas, you’ll think of Classic Crafts and Recipes for the Holidays.

A diary of a major renovation 3 out of 5 stars.
7 of 7 people found this review helpful.

This book chronicles the renovation/restoration that Martha Stewart completed on a historic New England farmhouse. It is very specific about many of the tasks that she completed, and gives some general how-to information (how to hire a contractor, create a landscape design, etc). I was disappointed because I was looking for ideas to restore and renovate my "new old house" and didn't really find much inspiration here. Much of the decorating revolved around painting murals and designs on the floor, which is something that I don't plan on doing. If you are planning a major renovation project to a large, historic home, this book might be a good starting place but I wouldn't rely on it for all of my information. Although it didn't really help me with my specific plans, it was an interesting, sometimes sketchy, read.

Editorial Review:

Martha Stewart guides homeowners step-by-step through every phase of the biggest, costliest, most demanding project many people will ever undertake--the renovation of an entire house. This is a virtual encyclopedia of essential information delivered with Martha Stewart's personal flair. Full-color photographs.

The best of the magazine ! 5 out of 5 stars.

If you don't subscribe to Martha's expensive magazine (I don't), then this book is the only thing you need to own. It is the best of all the good ideas without weeding through ads.

Cut & Paste Job. Avoid 1 out of 5 stars.

...these others books that I think are grand:

The New Decorating Book (Better Homes and Gardens(R))
by Better Homes and Gardens, Elegant and Easy Rooms: 250 Trade Secrets for Decorating Your Home, Elegant and Easy Living Rooms: 100 Trade Secrets for Designing With Style (Elegant and Easy).

I used all three with my designer and the results were delightful. Martha is just so passe anymore.

Editorial Review:

Martha Stewart's decorating ideas are deceptively simple. The materials are readily available and the instructions are easy, masking the sophistication it takes to realize the simplistic beauty of a plain white plate with a single maple leaf as a place card. "Good Things" is what Martha Stewart calls the "easy tips" segment of her television show, and, in fact, all of the tips in this book are remarkably easy (at least, in comparison to some of her other projects). Martha's potato, sweet potato, and onion latkes are remarkably good, and are particularly recommended for those who may still doubt whether they can match Martha in their own kitchens.

Editorial Review:

In The Taste for Living WORLD Cookbook, Mike Milken has once again commissioned chef Beth Ginsberg to transform more than 100 global favorites-- including quiche Lorraine, Spaghetti Bolognese, fajitas and crme brulee, into practically fat-free recipes loaded with cancer-fighting nutrients and soy protein. These low-fat dishes help fight heart disease too.

The ink was barely dry on the first Taste for Living Cookbook (CaP CURE, 1998), when chef/author Beth Ginsberg began perfecting the new recipes for her second collaboration with philanthropist and financier Mike Milken. The Taste for Living WORLD Cookbook: Mike Milken's Favorite Recipes for Fighting Cancer and Heart Disease (CaP CURE, October 1999, distributed by Time-Life) explores the vibrant international flavors that have become so much a part of American cooking today.

Ginsberg, a Culinary Institute of America graduate and natural foods chef, is a master at transforming high-fat classics such as spaghetti Bolognese, quiche Lorraine and egg rolls into soy-rich fare that meets the high standards for healthfulness and flavor that Mike requested when she became his personal and corporate chef.

"Don't give up the dishes and the flavors you love," encourages Ginsberg. "Change the ingredients. Adapt your cooking methods. You dont need lots of fat for food to taste great."

When Mike Milken was diagnosed with advanced prostate cancer in 1993, he quickly swore off the high-fat fare that he had eaten most of his life. He also founded CaP CURE, the Association for the Cure of Cancer of the Prostate. Working with some of the nation's top cancer researchers, he recognized the vital importance of cutting fat and increasing the consumption of soy protein to 40 grams daily--not an easy feat for a man who used to eat a fried-egg-and-bacon sandwich every morning.

L.A. chef/ restaurateur Beth Ginsberg convinced him that she could create healthy versions of his favorite dishes. Through the Taste for Living cookbooks, Mike and Beth share these great recipes with people who love to eat and people who want to lower their risk of cancer and heart disease through a healthy diet.

The more than 100 recipes in The Taste for Living WORLD Cookbook are all easy to follow, and each is accompanied by a complete nutritional analysis. Colorful icons tell the cook how long it takes to prepare a recipe from start to finish. Most are well under one hour.

The all-new Taste for Living WORLD Cookbook is organized into 14 complete menus, each featuring the cuisine of a particular country or region. Youll find some of the best known dishes from the French, Italian and Chinese repertoire. Youll be tempted by the aromatic flavors of the Indian, Caribbean, Mexican and American offerings. Individual menus offer appetizers, main course options and scrumptious (and wonderfully healthful) desserts.

As a bonus, the final section focuses on Mike's love for American junk food. From corn dogs to chocolate cupcakes, doughnuts to deep-dish pizza, you'll find recipes for the foods you thought were forbidden in a healthy diet. Ginsberg has not only taken the fat out of these notorious bad-guys of the American menu, she's enriched their nutrition profiles with soy protein, added fiber, vitamins and crucial micronutrients.

The Taste for Living WORLD Cookbook doesn't rely on exotic, hard-to-find ingredients to produce flavorful international food. Everything you need--from tofu, tempeh and tamari soy sauce to assorted grains, beans and produce--is available at large supermarkets or natural food stores nationwide. A special section at the back, "The Healthy World Pantry" provides additional information about all the ingredients.

More than a collection of recipes, The Taste for Living WORLD Cookbook presents up-to-date nutrition facts in the battle against cancer and heart disease. Sidebars look at different foods currently being studied for their potential roles fighting these chronic diseases. Special contributors David Heber, M.D., Ph.D., Director of the UCLA Center for Human Nutrition and Dean Ornish, M.D., Director of the Preventive Medicine Research Institute in Sausalito, CA, provide the scientific basis for why this diet works.

Scores of luscious full-color photographs from award-winning Burke-Triolo Studios in Los Angeles prove that low-fat, healthy food can and does look absolutely delicious.

CaP CURE, the Association for the Cure of Cancer of the Prostate, located in Santa Monica, California, is a nonprofit public charity that rapidly identifies and funds promising prostate cancer research. CaP CURE scientists have developed revolutionary vaccines, nutritional therapies and other treatments that give hope to prostate cancer patients. CaP CURE-supported researchers are currently conducting more than 70 human clinical trials of various therapies. The organization also works to raise public awareness of the role that diet plays in reducing the risk of cancer and other chronic diseases. All profits from The Taste for Living World Cookbook go to further CaP CURE's research.

From cacciatore to sukiyaki to enchiladas, and from tiramis to banana pudding, The Taste for Living WORLD Cookbook is for anyone who cares about enjoying good flavor and good health.

Book is good my wife likes it. (Martha Fan)
However I paid for fast delivery and it took a week to get the book! I missed my wifes birthday because of slow delivery.

My 18 year old copy is still an inspiration! 5 out of 5 stars.

This is NOT A COOKBOOK! This book is more a guide to throwing a great party that includes recipes as a bonus.
The guide to setting up a bar alone makes it worth having.
There are so many excellent ideas in here, beautiful photos, an emphasis on presentation and beautiful food....that never goes out of style.

Editorial Review:

This is the book that launched an empire. Martha Stewart's Entertaining was the world's first exposure to the doyenne of domestication. Entertaining offers recipes and menus for a number of different parties, including wedding receptions, afternoon teas, and a sumptuous Christmas dessert buffet. The book is lavishly illustrated, and much attention is paid to the dishes' presentation as well as their preparation. Even if you use it only as a springboard for your own party planning, Martha Stewart's Entertaining will provide fodder for many a celebration.

Editorial Review:

When you look past the cover of Martha Stewart's latest effort, you find it's not all about framing your fern collection. (Whew!) It is, however, about defining your home's style using accessories that look expensive but (generally) aren't. There's some very practical and budget-conscious advice here in the chapters about pictures, tables and stools, lamps and shades, shelves, screens and mirrors, and pillows and throws. You can disguise the humble origins of inexpensive adjustable shelving by adding wood trim around the edges and painting everything, including the metal standards and braces, to match the wall color. You can break up or conceal space with screens you make yourself from plain wood panels or old windows. You can update small outdoor tables with do-it-yourself mosaic tile that goes on in one piece. You can, of course, make a large framed entryway mirror from an $800 slab of mirror glass, as Martha does-- but really, no one will check your bank statement to see how much you spent, and it will reflect just as clearly with inexpensive hardware-store mirror glass. Some of the best projects are for sofa pillows, bed and table linens, and lampshades. Though Martha's voice isn't much in evidence in the text, her concepts are definitely here: the instructions are simple and straightforward and the look clean, comfortable and unfussy. --Barrie Trinkle

What's with the pastels? 2 out of 5 stars.
22 of 30 people found this review helpful.

I am a Martha Stewart fan, but this book disturbed me with its creepy pastels and white motif that pervaded the book. This sucked the Christmas spirit right out of me. I do yearn for the deep rich colors and and old money feel that were the Martha of yore. Now everything is post-divorce bright minimalist.

Editorial Review:

Martha Stewart's fans look to her to provide a sense of what's possible with unlimited taste and plenty of decorating funds, and certainly no one else does Christmas with such flair. Martha's Christmas feast may seem a bit over the top, with silver-leaved fruit at each place setting, crystal decanters of French dessert wines, and cake stands holding more decorations, but it photographs nicely--and, of course, the food looks great. There's also an easier New Year's Day party suggestion that will appeal to more casual party-givers. Martha's signature is the elegant simplicity of her decorative concepts, and this book's strength is its easy instructions for making wonderful wreaths, tree ornaments, and gift wrappings. The instructions for making aluminum snowflakes may alone be worth the price of the book.
