Nice pictures, lovley words, but not a gardener's helper. 3 out of 5 stars.
12 of 16 people found this review helpful.

Mary Englebreit has a very definitive look, and the pages of this book are filled with lovely photos that embody her style perfectly. Pictures aside, this book is not a very helpful gardening tool, since the captions do not indicate what types of flowers or plants have been used to make up the great settings pictured. The book's cover states that the reader will be shown how to obtain "the look", but one can't very well do that if no where does it say what flowers are used, can they? Over all, nice to look at, but not a big help .

Mary Engelbreit does it again! 5 out of 5 stars.

ME has taken her indoor style outdoors. It's an imaginative source for decorating the garden with whimsy. If you are looking for ideas on what to plant and how to keep it alive, this is not the book for you, go directly to Better Homes and Gardens!

An inspiring guide to achieving the ME look outdoors ! 5 out of 5 stars.

This book is as wonderful as I had expected it to be ! I am truly inspired to create in my "outdoor rooms" now and I now realize just how much work I have ahead of me as well ! The projects are extremely do-able and will make terrific mother's and father's day gifts as well as welcome additions to my own sad little garden. After doing several of the projects in ME's Children's Companion, I can share that her ideas are easily adapted to your own tastes and needs and you don't need to feel obligated to exactly duplicate her wonderful ideas... they're a fantastic spring board for your own creations.

Mary Englebreit has "visited" readers' homes for years. Her charming and homey illustrations have graced millions of cookbooks, calendars, journals, home accents, and greeting cards. Home Sweet Home offers readers the chance to peek at the prolific artist's inspiration-her own home in St. Louis, Mo. Home Sweet Home is a beautifully photographed and lovingly narrated tour of the cozy home Mary was meant to live in.The tour offers a rare glimpse at Mary's vibrant kitchen (classic Mary: black and white and red all over) with its warm, rich hardwood floors, and the soft, buttery tones of her living room, which opens suddenly and dramatically into an airy space that almost seems to be outdoors.Countless nooks and crannies are peppered with Mary's many favorite collections-clearly the inspiration for her art.In addition to the hundreds of sumptuous photographs and plentiful practical decorating advice, Home Sweet Home explains the method behind Mary's decorating genius, dispels common decorating myths, and gives insight into Mary's fairy-tale world.Home Sweet Home will inspire even a novice decorator to create a home that is distinctly her own.

A lot of fun 5 out of 5 stars.
18 of 19 people found this review helpful.

I am a nanny for three children and have often wished for a more adult coloring book. I was thrilled to have found this one. Not only is it Mary Engelbreit, whom I love, but the pictures are so much more fun to color than in the average book. There is a lot of detail in the pictures, and the pages are thick enough so you can use marker. It is fun for children, but a lot of fun for adults. The activities are fun for my charges and me to do together. We all recommend this book, for the adult child too.

Engelbreit Genius 5 out of 5 stars.

Yet again Mary has found a way into our homes. If you are tired of coloring in your children's books, or they have just plain told you to stop hogging their pages, this is the coloring book for you! Each page is made of heavy paper stock and high-contrast images. This one is a winner! Color to your hearts content, and while you're at it, pick up a frame or two and show off your very own Mary Engelbreit masterpiece.

Not sure what I expected but I like it 4 out of 5 stars.

Basically this is an activity book. There is a punch out mobile, some cards to make, a valentine punch out, a mask punch out, many very cute coloring pages for seasons. It's about 25-30 pages long - not huge. Beautiful Mary Engelbreit art. My 10 year old daughter thought the activities were beneath her - but I think I will do them!

Gorgeous Designs 5 out of 5 stars.
11 of 11 people found this review helpful.

The cover of this book gives a taste of the wonderful things to come. The designs are colourful and refreshing, and the charts are coloured and easy to read. I can't wait to stitch the 'Home Sweet Home' sampler. There are also great ideas for using the designs in innovative ways. This book is a classic for cross stitchers. Designs run over all the seasons, and include Christmas designs, things for children, and lovely things for the home. I have enjoyed just browsing through it and reading the helpful ideas and suggestions!

Editorial Review:

Mary Engelbreit's cheerful designs have become almost ubiquitous, appearing on everything from greeting cards to home fabrics to clothing, and the 80-plus seasonal projects in this book are a happy extension of those colorful pick-me-ups. These designs cover the cross-stitch skill range, from 10-count perforated plastic ornaments and button covers to an embellished gardener's journal cover worked on 36-count linen. The tinted charts, instructions, and specialty-stitch diagrams smooth the creative process for those who want to use these patterns as a jumping-off point for their own whimsy.

--Nobody does it like Mary-- 5 out of 5 stars.

MARY ENGELBREIT'S HOME COMPANION is a delightful book filled with her charming illustrations and beautifully decorated rooms.

If you're a fan of ME than you'll really enjoy this book. The photographs are good and the book is chock full of uniquely decorated rooms. I honestly have to say that almost every room has something in it that I would like to incorporate into my own home.

There are fifteen chapters and at the end of each a "project" is presented with instructions called "Watch ME Make It." Some of these are: A Tea Towel Pillow, Hand-Painted Picture Frame, and Birdhouse Bookends. Most of the projects seem to be fairly simple to do. To be honest, I don't usually do projects, but I'm very tempted to try to make several of these.

I loved looking at how "various collections" are incorporated into the styles of the different rooms. I'm a bit of a collector myself, and it was a treat for me to notice that some items that I have from my own collections are featured in the pictures.

It may sound odd to say this about a book on decorating, but I found HOME COMPANION to be very uplifting and a joy to read. I think I could live in this book!

5+ stars for the book itself, 1 star for this edition 1 out of 5 stars.
10 of 10 people found this review helpful.

Don't be fooled by the promise of illustrations by Mary Engelbreit. This is one of my favorite childhood books, and I bought this edition expecting illustrations by Mary Engelbreit throughout the book. The only illustration is the front cover. Do not buy this book expecting an illustrated volume.

An enchanting story no one should miss! 5 out of 5 stars.

Marilla and Matthew Cuthbert have always been content with their lives. While neither of them ever married, the elderly brother and sister have always made the best of their situation, keeping one another company, and getting the chores done around the sprawling Green Gables, where they reside. But as Matthew nears sixty, Marilla can't help but feel that he needs someone to assist him with the daily chores that have begun to grow stressful on his aging bones. Taking this into consideration, they decide to bring an orphan boy into their home. An individual who will have the opportunity to leave the asylum they have spent much of their life in, and have a true place to call home, as long as they agree to lend a helping hand to both Marilla and Matthew. But upon reaching the train station, Matthew is darned to find out that the little boy they were expecting to take home is actually a little girl.

Red-haired and freckle-faced, eleven-year-old Anne Shirley has always been a talkative individual who has spent much time strengthening her imagination by indulging in daydreams and fantasies. Her number one daydream, of course, is to have a home, and a family to call her own; which is why she's thrilled at the prospect of living at the lush, beautiful Green Gables. When she realizes that Marilla and Matthew were expecting a boy, however, Anne can't help but feel as if her one true hope in life is quickly being taken from her. She can't imagine going back to the asylum where there was "no scope for the imagination," and leaving the wonderful food, delightful people, and beautiful property of Green Gables behind. Luckily, with a dose of her non-stop talking, Matthew and Marilla realize that they can't possibly live without the wonderful Anne Shirley, and decide to keep her. Little did they know, however, is that with little Anne Shirley in residence, Green Gables will never be the same!

No matter how many times I have been to the bookstore, I feel as if L.M. Montgomery's ANNE OF GREEN GABLES has been gazing at me, yet never, in all these years have I ever read the classic story. It wasn't until I discovered Mary Engelbreit's edition that I decided to delve in to the world of Green Gables. Now I don't know how I ever survived all these years without being introduced to the lovely Anne Shirley. From the moment she arrives on the scene, Anne is a captivating character who you can't pull your eyes away from. Her wild imagination, stubbornness, and strong-willed personality make her absolutely irresistible; and the fact that she is so determined to hold grudges, do well academically, and give back to the compassionate Marilla and Matthew only makes you love her more. The fact that Montgomery has managed to create an assortment of supporting characters who you can't help but adore - from Marilla to Matthew, and Diana to Gilbert Blythe - only adds another delightful dimension to the tale. An enchanting story no one should miss!

Editorial Review:

Marilla and Matthew Cuthbert had planned to adopt a boy to help out around Green Gables farm. But waiting for them at the train station is freckle-faced, red-headed Anne Shirley—a talkative eleven-year-old orphan with a heart full of dreams and a desperate longing for a home. From the minute Anne sets foot in Matthew's buggy, Green Gables will never be the same! Discover one of the most delightful, irrepressible young heroines of all time in L. M. Montgomery's classic novel.

Young Sara Crewe has never been like her childish counterparts. Sure, she has always loved dolls, and tea parties; pretending and magic. But, unlike many other children her age, she has always carried herself with a Princess-like air that made her seem much more like an adult than a child, earning her the title "Little Missus" from her beloved father, Captain Crewe. After all, very little makes Sara emotional. She rarely cries, and often stares right through people with a solemn look upon her face, trying to figure them out, and thinking bizarre thoughts that, likely, would not occur to anyone else. Still, she is her father's child, and does what she can to assist him in his daily doings, even though she is merely seven-years-old. But when she is forced to attend Miss Minchin's boarding school, all that changes.

Sara is dreadfully unhappy from the moment she steps foot into Miss Minchin's boarding school. She dislikes Miss Minchin on site, and knows that she is simply pretending to be fond of the curious child. But Sara knows that she must make the best of it to please her father, and make it known that she is in good hands, even if she thinks otherwise. Luckily, she has lovely Emily by her side. Emily is the doll she and her father searched high and low for, and Sara knows that, together, they will be able to face Miss Minchin's boarding school, no matter how strenuous things become. Unlike the other students at Miss Minchin's, Sara, at her young age, has already received enough education through life experience, that she is more than qualified to teach at the school. Instead, Miss Minchin quickly takes credit for the bright pupils intelligence, and uses her as an example for prospective students. It doesn't hurt that little Sara has the most glamorous clothes, and the most peculiar looks, that contribute to the many stares she receives from just about anyone she encounters. But Sara is also quite different in her demeanor. She does not talk down to the servants, or beggars in the streets, but, rather, works to befriend them. Unfortunately, when Sara's luck changes, and she learns that her father is dead, and has left her penniless, her kindness is not reciprocated. Suddenly, she is thrust into an attic bedroom in rags by Miss Minchin herself, forced to take on any task thought up, and share her living space with a family of rats. Now, Sara must find the strength to continue on as a Princess on the inside, in an attempt to take control of her newfound suffering, and make her father up in heaven. Perhaps, by pretending, and working her hardest to stay strong, she will have the ability to turn her life around, and reclaim her place in the world.

For years, I have passed by Frances Hodgson Burnett's A LITTLE PRINCESS, without having ever picked up the story, and giving it a read. At times, I contemplated seeing the film, but just never got around to doing so. However, when I saw Mary Engelbreit's illustrated version of the classic tale, I finally dove straight into the pages, only to have emerged with a new outlook on life. Sara is, perhaps, one of the most charming little characters I have ever encountered in fiction. She is unlike anyone I have ever encountered in all of my years of reading. Her caring, and giving nature make her an example for young readers the world over. From page one, her peculiar way of looking through people, and forming her own thoughts about anyone and everyone she meets gives her an original air that instantly draws you in. However, it is her ability to create magical worlds and scenarios all her own that give the story a fantastical element not found elsewhere. Hodgson Burnett has crafted a tale that is profound and original from beginning to end. Her ability to provide amazing imagery which assists you in seeing Sara and all of her friends - as well as her acquaintances and enemies - right before your eyes is amazing; while her know-how of incorporating a wonderful message, that of helping others no matter how much or how little you have, is like a breath of fresh air, in a sea of novels that portray young girls as being conceited, self-centered, and self-absorbed. A LITTLE PRINCESS showcases the ups and downs of a charming child who will, no doubt, win over your heart in an instant, and hold fast to a little place in your mind forever and ever. Simply charming!

Editorial Review:

Sara Crewe lives happily at Miss Minchin's boarding school, where her beautiful clothes and gracious manners make her seem just like a real princess—until the day she loses everything. Now she must wear rags, sleep in the attic, and work hard for her living. Sara is poor and alone, but she keeps telling herself that she can still be a little princess inside, if only she tries hard enough.

I bought this book after receiving Mary Engelbriet's "Cross-Stitch For All Seasons" as a gift. I absolutely fell in love with her designs. My only wish is that she would publish more books with cross-stitch patterns of her artwork. This book has many adaptable patterns for a great variety of projects. If you are a cross-stitcher...you have to have her books!
