This book is very informative. Nancy gives info on specific machines. For instance Pfaff is very creative with decorative threads and a number of cover stitches. Other machine are mentioned. Having recently purchased an Evolve, the section on the specialty feet is very useful to me. There is a lot of info and many useful tips. The projects suggested are very well
explained.

Not an old book, but out of date 3 out of 5 stars.

Nancy Zieman is a Baby Lock dealer, so this book is heavily slanted in that direction. If you have a Baby Lock, it might be very useful. It is full of very pretty pictures, but not all that much useful information. We beginners need a book that is not an advertisement for a certain kind of machine. What is really needed is a "Machine Embroidery for Dummies" type book since the introduction of the Singer Futura and Quantum Futura machines which run off your computer have made it possible for so many more of us to afford embroidery machines. It's a whole new ballgame, and there are going to be a whole lot more players than ever before! Save your money and keep looking for a book with more substance.

Even though I haven't watched the Sewing With Nancy show for the 20years she's been on the air- I have benefited from the past couple years since I discovered her show and found that I could learn to sew and have fun. Nancy has a wonderful teaching style that the beginner and the advanced sewer can benefit from. This book is a wonderful collection of all those "Hints" she reads every show from all her viewers. I have found this book to be a wonderful addition to my sewing education and confidence. I highly recomend this book to the beginner and advanced sewer.

How-to gift books are famous for featuring recycled projects (you know, the ones you've seen over and over, but in a different fabric or color). Not so for Quick Gifts and Decor. These famous authors and television celebrities aren't resting on their laurels...the projects are really unique, easy and truly elegant. (Sort of Martha Stewart simplified for the rest of us short on time and exotic materials.) My favorites were the Festive Packages (fabric gift wrap), the Starburst Table Scarf (made from napkins) and the Hanging Hamper (for diapers, towels or laundry). Well worth the price...complete with all cutting directions, grids and patterns included.

I purchased this book for my mother who loves it. She created a beautiful quilt for me two years ago, and I absolutely cherish it... it is the most beautiful quilt. She found the book extremely helpful for new quilters and continues to refer to it.

This is one of the first quilting books I purchased and I did not like it. In the section describing supplies, it seems more like an advertisement for the brands she uses and is sponsored by. Someone buying supplies following only her directions may spend money than they truly must in order to begin quilting.

Each project is only offered in one size, and those sizes are not even terribly practical, unless you want to wallpaper your house with hanging quilts.

She identifies each step of the process with an increment of time - hence the name 10-20-30 Minutes - which is not particularly accurate and not helpful to the beginner quilter.

Plus, the projects are not organized or identified by skill level - the beginner quilter who picks up this book should not try a kaleidescope quilt as one of her first projects! I also did not like the organization of the chapters and the projects chosen seem quite random.

One final note: Ms. Zieman seems to think this boook can be used as a part of her modeling portfolio - there are many many pictures of her thoughout it. I bought the book to see quilts, not her!

This may be used as a minor introduction to some quilting techniques for the experienced crafter, but for someone like me with little craft experience who really wanted to dive into the world of quilting, it is NOT the right purchase. A better choice is one of the easy level Quilt in a Day books.

I've been sewing since I was 15. I've taught others how to sew. This is a good common sense book and I think it is helpful for all skill levels. After turning a few pages, I'm wanting to sew!

This an exciting book, and one which will make sewing possible in your busy life. Included are new techniques for sewing better as well as faster. The instruction sheet that came with your pattern doesn't have the best plan for sewing your next garment -- this book does! Very useful

I've been sewing for 40 years. I read this manual like a novel. It was so helpful to me to becoming more organized. I teach young girls to sew, and teaching the organization methods by Nancy has helped them see how much easier it is to sew when you have everything you need in one place. NO more looking for the missing buttons, zippers, etc. Nancy is such a talented individual and I'm grateful for her expertise. Anyone who buys this book will benefit from it. Enjoy!

Great tips, for sewing machine and serger, for a reality-based sewer. (So many books are for people whose lives seem to consist of nothing but sewing, not for the rest of us.) When she says she has tips to speed things up, she just doesn't mean fast - she means fast and thorough. So it's not only fast, it's better. The only problem I had was sometimes the illustrations should have been numbered to coordinate with directions and weren't, or else there were steps not illustrated (though well described) so I was sewing "by faith in the word" of the directions and it turned out right. It is well illustrated and there is always something to learn and try on almost every page.

As a twenty-something who wanted to learn to sew, I asked an experienced sewer for a good starter book. She handed me this one. Nancy Zieman (of PBS's Sewing with Nancy) originally wrote this book for use in 4H programs, so fitting instructions are geared toward young people's sizes. (Both boys and girls size charts are shown, and there are boys and girls on the cover. Extra points for not being sexist!)

But this book is just as valuable for adults who want to learn to sew, especially if they're trying to do it solo. You'll learn all the basics: pattern selection, basic machine operation, and stitching. There's also a brief introduction to sergers. This is a good little guide that you'll want to turn to time and again.

I kept repeating "great idea" while reading through this cleaver and insightful book. There are numerous ideas that will save you money, time and keep your projects organized. It even has ideas for breathing new life into old clothes or using them to decorate. The book is well written and illustrated making it very easy to duplicate the projects at home. It is a great addition to my sewing library.

This advice-laden book compiled by a renowned television sewing guru works equally well as a reference for answers to specific questions or as a guide to dip into at random. The well-organized hints all sent in by viewers of Sewing with Nancy are occasionally supplemented by variations or further elaboration from Nancy herself. There's so much information (most of it relevant to general sewing projects; some specialized, but potentially useful) that inveterate quick-tip collectors may find themselves reading page after chock-full page of valuable hints when they only meant to look up how to make a crisp collar or find a better way to store all those fly-away pattern pieces.
