And don’t even start with pruning!

Despite all the (ahem) thorny particulars, gardeners still love to grow these beautiful flowers that would by any other name still smell as sweet. • Planting
  • Watering and mulching
  • Fertilizing

Editorial Review:

TASCHEN's 25th anniversary - Special edition! The refined and revered tradition of botanical illustration, produced under aristocratic patronage, stretches back to the Renaissance. It emerged out of the desire to catalogue nature in all its wild splendour, and it was a process that demanded the most precise and skilful of artists. French flower painter Pierre-Joseph Redout? is often viewed as one of the last and the best of these painters and engravers. Commissioned by among others, Napoleon's Josephine, Redout? studied with the finest flower painters in France and Amsterdam, and developed a breathtaking skill at translating his observations of nature onto paper. His illustrations of the botanical alphabets of D.-M. Guillamain were a landmark in flower painting for their accuracy and beauty. He was also an innovator in the techniques of printing, introducing "stipple-engraving" to France, always striving for greater exactitude in his art. This is a glorious and completely faithful reproduction of his most celebrated work Les Roses, which was published in three volumes between 1817 and 1824. In Les Roses he turns his attention to that most romantic and evocative of subjects, and this handsome volume preserves every detail of Redout?'s masterful representation of nature's gifts. "Splendid roses of timeless beauty. A jewel, and not just for rose-lovers." Stuttgarter Zeitung, Germany

It would be difficult to over praise this excellent encyclopedia. The photography is outstanding; the descriptions of roses intense yet easily understood, and the added features on various rose breeders and their histories are so helpful. The introduction directs the reader on how to use the book to best advantage. Yes, a marvelous book, this first edition of The American Rose Society.

Great Reference guide! 5 out of 5 stars.

Editorial Review:

Would a rose by any other name smell as sweet?

Shaped like a miter’s cap or delicately hued like the pearl-colored petticoats of a duchess, scented like honeyed almonds or nodding heavily in the wind, every old-fashioned rose possesses a unique character. And their names–often drawn from history and mythology–have stories as enchanting and evocative as the flowers themselves.

This gorgeously photographed collection of fifty exquisite roses reveals how some of the world’s most storied, beloved plants received their names, and how the names go hand in hand with the flowers’ appearance and fragrance. It’s a voyage of discovery for rose connoisseurs, garden enthusiasts, and anyone else who appreciates delicate blooming beauty.

Joining the rose parade are:

storied characters such as Greenmantle, the heroine of Sir Walter Scott’s novel Redgauntlet. As attention-getting as the character’s exquisite green silk cape, the rose’s leaves, rather than its blossoms, are the source of its heady fragrance.

Artful personalities such as Peter Paul Rubens, the Flemish master whose paintings often featured the luminous skin of voluptuous goddesses. Fittingly, his namesake rose is a heavenly flesh color, tinged with pink.

Heroes, heroines, and rascals such as Napoléon. The petals of his eponymous rose become darker and more disheveled as they age, much like the emperor who fell deep into madness after building an empire.

Nobles and notables such as King Louis-Philippe. Some liken the rich fragrance of this rose to cherries, although the shape of its buds may be more true to its namesake’s character: The king was often portrayed in caricatures as a pear.

Well-bred ladies and gents such as the intrepid British tea thief Robert Fortune. On a secret mission in China, he clipped the rose that became known as ‘Fortune’s Double Yellow’.

With vivid accounts of the colorful figures who inspired the names of the roses and with lyrical descriptions of the flowers themselves, Pink Ladies & Crimson Gents is a valentine to the rose, a feast for the eyes, and a delightful gift for any romantic soul.

Wonderful resource 5 out of 5 stars.
6 of 6 people found this review helpful.

I adore roses and when I first purchased my house, I got several books on the topic and planted several roses in my front entry. Unfortunately only one of several plants has survived these past twelve years, and I got discouraged. The book Complete Guide to Roses has ignited my interest again. It covers every aspect of roses, from their origin and development, to testing and preparing soil, diagnosing pests and diseases by leaf inspection, and the description of specific types, varieties, and characteristics of roses available on the market today. Armed with this new information and a sense of mission, I've decided to try again!

Editorial Review:

Detailed information to select, plant, propagate, water, fertilize, and protect roses from pests and disease.

Eye-popping color photographs and profiles feature the 500 best rose varieties for North America—selected for bloom power, disease resistance, and performance.

Tips and techniques to successfully landscape and design gardens with roses.

Easy-to-follow information for beginners as well as in-depth answers for experts on arranging, preserving, and exhibiting roses.

Must-have for novice or experienced rose grower 5 out of 5 stars.
21 of 21 people found this review helpful.

After carefully comparing other books that provided comprehensive information on roses, I chose the Sunset Roses book and have not regretted it one bit. When I purchased the book, I had 4-5 roses in my garden, and now I have 52 (at the time of this writing ;-). I still refer to this book as a reference for pruning techniques, disease, planting and placement, and just as a wonderful review of the next rose I must have!

The roses covered are certainly the most popular and easy to grow, and there is a section in the back that lists specific roses that are favorites of regional rosarians. So, for instance, if you are in zone 5-6 in Ohio, you can find best roses for the midwest/great lakes area, and so on. This is really valuable because a rose that will be a star for one gardener (such as Mr. Lincoln), might not perform well in another garden in a different part of the country.

Editorial Review:

Which roses grow best in a small garden? What companion plants complement a rose border? How do you 'modernize' a rose garden? All these and more are answered in the new edition of Sunset's Roses. Everything for the novice or experienced rose devotee is here-the latest advice on shopping for roses, growing techniques, planning a rose garden, maintaining healthy roses, regional tips, and yes, detailed pruning instructions (no more 'ouch.') With its lush photography showcasing over 350 roses, plus a gallery of choices hand-picked by Sunset experts, this is the resource book rose fanciers will reach for time and time again.

Good selection guide for finding roses 4 out of 5 stars.
14 of 15 people found this review helpful.

Taylor's Guides are popular tools for plant selection and this revised edition is no exception. The size of the new edition is a little larger than the old one but it is still a comfortable size for reading in bed or taking with you to the nursery. 380 roses are covered here, from all rose classes. 200+ pages are glossy and contain a color photograph of each rose. The gallery is followed by an "encyclopedia of roses" which gives basic information about growing the rose and how best to use it in the garden. A brief introduction covers the basics of buying roses, growing and caring for them. A chart is also included which explains pest and diseases and offers ecologically safe controls.

This is a good guide but if you are seeking a book that is more comprehensive and includes a larger selection of roses, you might want to check out "Botanica's Roses" by William Grant. This book includes over 2000 roses and is priced similarly. Also, the just released "American Rose Society Encyclopedia of Roses" is also outstanding but much higher in price.

Editorial Review:

No variety of plants can contribute as much beauty to a garden - and as much satisfaction to the gardener who knows how to grow them - as roses. In this guide you'll find

• photographs of almost 400 roses, with a quick reference to fragrance, winter hardiness, and disease resistance
• every important class of rose - Species Roses, Old Garden Roses, Shrubs, Hybrid Teas, Floribundas, Grandifloras, Miniatures, and Climbers
• suggestions for carefree border and ground-cover roses
• an encyclopedia entry for each plant, noting its uses and limitations
• a pest and disease chart that describes the damage, its cause, and ecologically safe controls.

Whether you want to buy a single carefree bush or maintain a whole garden of perfect roses, this Taylor's Guide has everything you need to know to succeed the first time.

Finally, what I've been looking for! 5 out of 5 stars.
142 of 142 people found this review helpful.

My friends and family all know I'm crazy about growing roses and collecting rose books. I'm often asked for just one book that a beginner could use easily, yet still not outgrow as his experience and interest expand. I know a number of books that fill part of this need, but not all. Finally I have found one I can recommend without reservation. This book covers the range from modern roses to antiques, why to choose own root or grafted roses, how to handle diseases and pests, and how to prepare the soil. The general orientation is for organic methods, but he presents the information without being judgmental. You won't feel guilty if you spray your roses, but he'll tell you how to avoid it most of the time by choosing easy-care varieties well suited to your own climate. All this, and I haven't yet mentioned the beautiful photographs and helpful instructional drawings.

Editorial Review:

Foolproof Guide to Growing Roses will appeal to anyone who wants roses in their garden. It is ideal for gardeners who have been afraid to grow roses as well as for those who already grow these lovely flowers and want to learn more about them. Unlike many competitive books that originate in Great Britain and do not address North American growing issues, this book covers the effects of local climate on roses. Readers will learn how to care for the plants easily and efficiently, prepare and maintain the soil for optimal plant health, control pests and disease with environmentally friendly techniques, and prune every type of rose.

Disappointing 3 out of 5 stars.
7 of 7 people found this review helpful.

I love growing David Austin roses, reading about them and deciding which ones to add to my garden. I was disappointed with the quality of the paper and the printing has declined since the previous edition. I found it difficult to really see what a rose would look like in the garden when the backgrounds of the photos are all stark white.
After having this book out on my coffee table for three months and making notes to decide which roses to buy I noticed that the binding is starting to tear. I feel that stardardizing this edition took away the charm and beauty of the previous edition. ams

Editorial Review:

Beloved for their beautiful pastel colors and their appealing fragrance, often enhanced by the hotter and more reliable summers of the U.S., English roses have been garden favorites for years. When he originated English roses, David Austin sought to combine the desirable flower forms and fragrance of old roses with the wide color range and repeat flowering of modern hybrids. To the delight of gardeners across the world, he was successful. Now, in his first book in more than ten years, Austin introduces 40 recently developed varieties in addition to 40 of his best-loved and time-tested favorites. Beautiful photographic portraits of each are complimented by notes on attributes, history, and special requirements for growing in the garden. Ideal for rose enthusiasts and gardeners.
