WTF? A very enlightening read indeed... 1 out of 5 stars.

I mean really now. Who sees any sort of humor at all in this book?

I actually find the author's tone to be completely indignant and arrogant, she is ungracious, unkind, even cruel in her tone towards her "friends" and co-workers while she is playing poor.

She even goes so far as to compare her plight to that of a princess being punished by being forced to hand feed all her subjects... this lady is a real piece of work. She is absolutely deplorable and such a snobbish, egotistical (well a not so very nice person)! Her "insights" and her surprising realizations scare me, I mean if real people actually find shock and awe at the same everyday DUH she makes a big fuss over, then this country is way past salvageable!!!

She is a career essayist who lowers herself to play poor for a little while, and tries to maintain a decent quality of life while getting by on minimum wage, something which is definitely not her area of expertise. She describes looking for places to live, jobs, working conditions and overall environments of the places she goes.

She alienated, humiliated, and demeaned almost everyone she met, though not in any sort of dialog to their face, just her thoughts about them...

This is definitely a must read, but not for the reasons by which I kept being mislead. For people like myself, this is at times hard to read, however it is definitely a book you will not soon forget, and definitely an author you will not soon forget either.

Author Gavin de Becker says victims of violent behavior usually feel a sense of fear before any threat or violence takes place. Revised and updated in 2000, this version contains a 40-page section on media law, guides for punctuation and bibliographies, and specialized glossaries for business and sports writing, all in addition to its 280-page generalized stylebook.

Within each section, entries are alphabetized, and searching for an answer is a fairly simple process. Tricky words--those that can be hyphenated (know-how) or not (jukebox), homonyms, nonstandard spellings (mo-ped)--are given their own short entries. Larger categories, such as religions, military titles, the Internet, and datelines, have multiple pages devoted to their explanations, but detail and clarity are brought nicely together in each listing. Many entries concern brand names and trademarks--never again will you question whetherpingpong or Ping-Pong should be used in the flier for your table-tennis tournament.

While a few sections of this book--the ones concerning media law, photo captions, filing the wire, and proofreading marks--will most likely be used by professional and student journalists and editors, the majority of this book is an excellent tool for anyone who ever has to write for the public. Amazon Best of the Month, July 2008: The first thing you'll notice about How Fiction Works is its size. At 252 pages, it's a marvel of economy for a book that asks such a huge question and right away you'll want to know (as you might at the start of a new novel) what the author has in store. James Wood takes only his own bookshelves as his literary terrain for this study, and that in itself is the most delightful gift: he joins his audience as a reader, citing his chosen texts judiciously--ranging from Henry James (from whom he takes the best epigraph to a book I've ever read) to Nabokov, Joyce, Updike, and more--to explore not just how fiction works, mechanically speaking, but to reflect on how a novelist's choices make us feel that a novel ultimately works ... or doesn't. Wood remarks that you have to "read enough literature to be taught by it how to read it." His terrific bibliography will surely be a boon to anyone's education, but it's his masterful writing that you'll want to keep reading over the course of your life. --Anne Bartholomew

EVERY TEACHER SHOULD READ THIS BOOK 5 out of 5 stars.

I LOVE this book. I am an art teacher in Phoenix. I was able to discuss art integration through all subject matters with my students and I think that it's essentail! We are cutting our art programs down to nothing and we're creating a whole new generation of test takers -- our kids need to be problem solvers and CREATIVE problem solvers to compete in our new world. Our world that we live in now will NOT be the world our kids live in when they're grown up. Things are evolving fast and we need to give them tools to conquer tomorrow's problems. This book gives great insights! BUY IT! READ IT and give it to your school administrators! Thanks Mr. Pink!

"What it Takes" to write the perfect political book 5 out of 5 stars.

No study of modern American politics is complete without reading this book. At the center of the political universe is the presidency. What kind of people seek this office, and all of the attendant scrutiny and hardship that even the most fortunate candidates endure? What personal attributes set one candidate above the rest?

Essentially, one of these men will be the most powerful man in the world, and have a chance at shaping history. This book answers the questions "why" and "how."

Cramer understands his subjects, and the profiles of each candidate would be excellent stand-alone biographies. Extremely readable and well written, without sacrificing substance.

A truly unique and indespensible work. To find out what it takes, read this book.

I used this text in an Econ class last semester (my first in a few years) and this book was great. The summaries were helpful, there are several in each chapter instead of one at the end, that's very handy when you're looking for specific information. There are lots of charts to help with the formulas. My favorite areas included the chapters on Antitrust Policy and Regulation, Agriculture, Income Inequality, and the Costs of Production. Economics can be pretty dry subject matter, luckily I also had a lively instructor. Obviously as a student you don't get much say in which text you use, but this is a good one.

His Best Yet. In My Opinion! 5 out of 5 stars.

I am not done reading this book yet, but I felt compelled to write a review. I have read all of his nonfiction work except Riding The Iron Rooster and in my opinion, this is his best nonfiction work to date. Followed VERY closely by The Pillars of Hercules and then The Old Patagonian Express.

Paul is his usual misanthropic self on this long trip and it's wonderful! He recounts his divorce as he's going through London and remembering when he lived there and taking us back to before he became the Paul Theroux we know today. It's a rather rare insight into the man and I can only assume as he has gotten older he has become a bit more open about these types of feelings. And I appreciate him sharing it with the reader.

There is a magical sense of juxtaposition between the first time he made this journey and this time. And he recounts it in very enjoyable terms. I feel his writing is much tighter in this novel than in some of his other works. He captured my attention from the first page when he described how the average traveler is performing one of the laziest activities on Earth. For, to him, traveling in comfort and "sightseeing" is a lazy man's idea of fun. And I agree. Although, I am not brave enough, nor do I have the time to go on these long train journeys, I admire Paul for opening up my eyes to a very different way of traveling and seeing the world.

I'm not even done with this book yet, but I can tell that this is one of those books you don't want to finish. I wish it would just go on and on. Oh well...
