Editorial Review:

If you're comfortable with the concept of photography but find the digital part a stumbling block, Digital Photography for Dummies will get you over the hump.

Author Julie Adair King, a photographer and graphics-software specialist, deftly explains such concepts as resolution, f-stop, and compression. She is also refreshingly upfront about the differences between film-based and digital photography, spelling out the latter's shortcomings early on. Her advice on all aspects of the field is well thought out and simple without being condescending. She informs readers, for example, that you needn't use high-pixel resolutions simply for placing images on a Web page. Such tips will come as a relief to fledgling photographers on a budget, or novices who may have thought they had to use the highest-quality settings at all times.

Aside from the technical concerns of working with the camera and computer, King also gives sound tips on composition and lighting. And since retouching is one of the principal benefits of digital photography, she spends a fair amount of time discussing photo-editing software. And while most of the examples are in black and white, the most important examples, gratefully, are included in a 16-page color plate section in the middle of the book.

For those of you considering jumping into the world of digital photography, you'll be hard-pressed to find a better guide to getting started than Digital Photography for Dummies. --John Frederick Moore

Editorial Review:

Who says office cubicles need to be dreary? In this book, author Kaden Harris (creator of www.eccentricgenius.caEccentric Genius) introduces aspiring and die-hard Makers to a highly entertaining parallel universe of surreal office-based projects that are sure to pique the curiosity of even the most jaded office mates.

From desktop guillotines and crossbows to mood-enhancing effects and music makers, each project presents a different set of challenges and opens new avenues of Maker lore. There's a strong emphasis on the basic mechanical theories and principles of the devices presented in the book, as well as the fabrication techniques you need to use. But this is far more than a book of project "how-tos". Eccentric Cubicle offers oblique industrial design and fabrication philosophies, countless cultural reference points, and innumerable bad puns.

This book is a dream come true for you office-bound souls who are tech DIY enthusiasts, hobbyist engineers/designers, and Makers at heart. Imagine having your cubicle sport projects such as:
  • A mechanical golfer
  • Lucid dreaming induction device
  • USB-powered bubble blower
  • Fog machine
  • A desktop guillotine
  • And a whole lot more
In the Eccentric Cubicle, Harris starts with classic, time-honored principals, then modernizes and augments his designs with performance enhancements and updated feature sets -- all while precariously balancing form, function, and oddness. Scavenging and repurposing materials and components at every opportunity, he challenges and inspires you to modify and adapt the projects and designs to meet your own scale, performance, and aesthetic requirements.

Bring character and life to your office desktop with Eccentric Cubicle!

Editorial Review:

U.S DVD sales will top $8.1 billion in 2002, an increase of over 50%, according to Adams Media Research. DVD sales this year surpassed video, even though only 30% of households have DVD players (compared to 90% for VCRs). In August 2002 the New York Times dubbed DVD “the most successful home entertainment device in history…a true pop-culture phenomenon.” DVD Demystified has served as DVD’s bible since the format first shipped in 1997. Demystifying not only basic technology issues but detailing production and authoring processes, making sense out of the plethora of battling video, audio, and data formats, and clearly explaining how DVD standards and specs dovetail or clash with related digital media standards, this book has not only become DVD’s standard reference, but also required reading for DVD enthusiasts who wanting to peer behind the scenes and figure out how to get the most from their technology. Since then, Jim Taylor has become DVD’s most visible guru, now President of the DVD Association, author of the internet DVD FAQ, and profiled by E!Online and DVD Report. This third edition will be almost completely rewritten to cover the major technology, format, and standard changes of the past three years, and will once again include a DVD designed to show the extreme limits of performance of this dynamic technology.

This is a great book that shows you how to use all the bells and whistles of the iPhone. Easy to follow steps and full color images make it fun to look at and read.

Great Book-A must have for iphone owners! 5 out of 5 stars.

This has a lot of great tips and I needed this book before I even took my iphone out of the box! It guides you step-by-step and I really love the visual reference ( a necessity for me!) Enjoy-you really can't go wrong with this handy guide.

Great Tips that help with iPod Touch as well. 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

This book is a wonderful, full color step by step introduction to the original iPhone. Note that this book doesn't cover the new 3G version of the iPhone. Although I don't have an iPhone yet, I was interested in an iPod Touch since it has everything but phone functions and it was very helpful for navigating through the menus and explaining what the settings cover. The full color pictures are excellent screen shots of the various features. It also walks you through basic set ups for personalization, and explains how to use the main features. I highly recommend this book if you are interested in an iPhone or an iPod Touch and not sure if you will like it. When the 3G version of this books comes out, grab the update. Great info for a reasonable price.

Great learning tool 4 out of 5 stars.

If you are interested in making home movies, editing or even making relatively high quality films, this book will certainly put you on the fast track to success. That being said, there is nothing quite like experimenting with the program itself, but the book can help work out some of the kinks. Finally, it is not as in depth as other books on this program.

Truly the Best Damn Windows Server 2003 Book Period 5 out of 5 stars.
26 of 27 people found this review helpful.

From the author: If you're involved in managing a Microsoft Windows Server 2003 network, you need this book. You don't have time to waste reading through arcane tidbits of interesting but useless information. You certainly don't have time to waste reading a book that's been morphed from other versions of Windows. You need something built from the ground up that addresses exactly what you need to know about Windows Server 2003. Period.

The Best Damn Windows Server 2003 Book Period is a comprehensive compilation of everything you need to know about Windows Server 2003. Each chapter stands on its own as a focused reference for specific server information and tasks. We included only the relevant, need-to-know information. Each chapter has screen shots and step-by-step instructions covering critical server tasks as well as pertinent background information. It won't teach you how to convert binary to decimal for IP addressing, but it will show you how to set up DHCP scopes and implement IPv6 on your network. It doesn't explain what a router does, it shows you how to configure routers for secure and efficient network traffic management. From disk and storage management to securing wireless access, this book gets right to the heart of the topics you need to effectively manage your Windows Server 2003 network.

Get this book, keep it handy and refer to it often. Sleep better at night knowing your network is in good hands - yours.

Editorial Review:

In keeping with past trends, full migration to this latest Microsoft Server Operating System will begin in earnest 12 months after its release, in mid-to-late 2004. This book hits the market just as large enterprises begin the process of moving from Windows 2000 Server to Windows Server 2003. The title says everything you need to know about this book. No other book on the market combines this breadth and depth of coverage with the kind of product expertise and quality standard expected from Syngress. Every aspect of Planning, Installing, Configuring and Troubleshooting a Windows Server 2003 network is distilled and documented, with plenty of examples and illustrations. And unlike its competition, this is a book that was written from the ground up for Windows Server 2003. It doesn't rely on hackneyed computer geek stereotypes; its tone, coverage and examples reflect the realities of TODAY'S enterprise network professional.

Most Valuable Tool 5 out of 5 stars.
11 of 11 people found this review helpful.

I have had a copy of Don's TTL Cookbook around and handy ever since 1984. During one digital electronics course I took, it just happened to be the textbook used for the course.

This book is by far the most practical and well written electronics book I have ever seen, or run across. The methods and rules to follow for using TTL are spelled out so that one can build reliable circuits. The examples given are explained so that one may draw their own conclusions, and use the examples as building blocks or teaching aids to develop one's own circuits.

Time and again, I return to this text as reference. It, along with the CMOS Cookbook, make a powerful set of tools for anyone who wants to build high-reliablility digital circuits.

Editorial Review:

A clear and complete look at TTL. No technician's library is complete without this book that introduces TTL, telling what it is and how it works. Illustrates how TTL is used in many practical applications; provides typical circuits and working applications; and discusses TTL strategies.
