This book loves FileMaker and developers 5 out of 5 stars.

Adding my kudos to the reviews so far...

Ray Cologon is the best mind in FileMaker today, and has been for a long time. Ray's depth of knowledge makes each section of this book riveting. While you might not read it like a novel, it is worth reading every word, because not one is wasted.

The book provides an essential and thorough explanation of both the simplicity and power of FileMaker, making it invaluable for developers at every stage. It also offers the insights of a unique, dedicated, and generous thinker. As I both skimmed and read in depth, I felt that, through this book, Ray wants all FileMaker developers to succeed by knowing both the steps and the thinking behind them, and by using our imagination to apply this knowledge to our own particular situations.

Thanks for all the hard work, Ray!

Editorial Review:

Used by millions worldwide, FileMaker Pro is an award-winning database program for managing people, projects, images, assets, and other information. It's easy to use and totally customizable--so long as you know what you're doing. But FileMaker Pro doesn't come with a printed manual, so FileMaker Pro: The Missing Manual is the authoritative, jargon-free book that should have been in the box.

FileMaker Pro: The Missing Manual approaches FileMaker the way FileMaker approaches you: it's user-friendly and seemingly straightforward enough, but it offers plenty of substance worthy of deeper exploration. Packed with practical information as well as countless expert tips and invaluable guidance, it's an in-depth guide to designing and building useful databases with the powerful and pliable FileMaker Pro.

Covering FileMaker for both Windows and Macintosh, FileMaker Pro: The Missing Manual is ideal for small business users, home users, school teachers, developers--anyone who wants to organize information efficiently and effectively. Whether you want to run a business, publish a shopping cart on the Web, plan a wedding, manage a student information system at your school, or program databases for clients, this book delivers.

Author Geoff Coffey has many years of experience using FileMaker Pro (he was, in fact, an early beta tester for the product). Author Susan Prosser is a FileMaker Certified Developer who trains other developers. Together, Coffey and Prosser show you how to:

  • Get FileMaker up and running quickly and smoothly
  • Import and organize information with ease
  • Design relational databases that are simple to use, yet powerful
  • Take advantage of FileMaker Pro calculation capabilities
  • Automate processes with scripting
  • Customize FileMaker Pro to your needs and preferences
  • Share information with other people (coworkers, clients, and customers) and other programs
  • Understand and select the best security options

What could easily come across as dry and intimidating--things like relational theory, calculations, and scripting--are presented in a way that is interesting and intuitive to mainstream users. In no time, you'll be working more productively and efficiently using FileMaker Pro.

Editorial Review:

As users come to depend on MySQL, they find that they have to deal with issues of reliability, scalability, and performance--issues that are not well documented but are critical to a smoothly functioning site. This book is an insider's guide to these little understood topics.

Author Jeremy Zawodny has managed large numbers of MySQL servers for mission-critical work at Yahoo!, maintained years of contacts with the MySQL AB team, and presents regularly at conferences. Jeremy and Derek have spent months experimenting, interviewing major users of MySQL, talking to MySQL AB, benchmarking, and writing some of their own tools in order to produce the information in this book.

In "High Performance MySQL" you will learn about MySQL indexing and optimization in depth so you can make better use of these key features. You will learn practical replication, backup, and load-balancing strategies with information that goes beyond available tools to discuss their effects in real-life environments. And you'll learn the supporting techniques you need to carry out these tasks, including advanced configuration, benchmarking, and investigating logs.

Topics include:

A review of configuration and setup options

Storage engines and table types

Benchmarking

Indexes

Query Optimization

Excellent high level overview 5 out of 5 stars.

My company has been an SAP customer for years, but there was still a lot of mystery about what SAP is and why it's good. This book lays it out in perfect terms, integrating both the C-suite point of view and the IT perspective. I highly recommend this book to anyone working with SAP.

Excellent Book 5 out of 5 stars.

An excellent book that gives a good insight of the business processes and business objects of different SAP R/3 modules. I urge the author to write a new edition of the book that reflects the recent development in SAP.

As someone who is quite new in SAP World, I must say that this book left a good impression on me by answering how SAP relates to different business processes in an organization. The subject is well-categorized, business processes and objects are well-defined. But on the other hand more illustrations and charts could have been used to improve the understanding of readers.

What happened in the new edition? 1 out of 5 stars.
7 of 7 people found this review helpful.

This edition appears to be about 1/3 the size of previous editions; and refers to a fairly old version of SAP... even though this was released in Dec 2005.
There is a great many things missing here. SPAM... I guess you do not need that any more.
Perhaps the publishers wanted a book for managers.

Anyway, if you are considering this, get the 2nd edition... or buy one of the many that are used, as I expect there will be many BASIS admins selling this back the day after they purchase it.
Sorry... I was hoping for an updated version of Edition 2.

Very good product 5 out of 5 stars.

This book is very good to get understanding of SAP SD structure. Book arrived before it was scheduled to arrive. So I am really happy with in time delivery and quality of the product.

Best one for Introduction 2 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

This is the best book to have the glimpse of SD, in some cases detailed too. But once you are into SD, there is hardly any thing new that you can know from this book.
The author presents the concepts in a clear crispy way so that one can understand easily with less Business background.

I suggest this book if you want to start learning a topic but not to master it.

I can rate it 5 * for an SD Novice but a single * for whom who knew the concepts.

Editorial Review:

Editorial Review:

If you use MySQL, you know why it's the world's most popular open source database: small, fast, and powerful, and so rich in features that no administrator or programmer can stay familiar with all of them. There are always some little-known commands and clauses that could help you become more efficient in your work if you could just keep them in mind. The problem is, you don't always have time to stop and thumb through an exhaustive reference when you're hard at work. If you need a quick reminder, the MySQL Pocket Referenc can lead you straight to the answer you need to know to get the job done. Easy to take and use anywhere, this little book provides instant reminders on how to use important MySQL functions in conjunction with key parts of the LAMP open source infrastructure. A complete reference to the MySQL version of SQL, this pocket guide also serves as a convenient companion to our large, in-depth volume, Managing and Using MySQL. The book covers installation of MySQL and includes a description of SQL commands, data types, operators, and functions. In this small book, you get a handy reference to the enormous feature set of MySQL, the dominant database in the open source world.

Editorial Review:

For those interested in redefining the way in which their business does its business, SAP R/3 Business Blueprint: Understanding the Business Process Reference Model is worth a perusal. Authors Curran and Keller define their central idea--business engineering--as a method by which information technology is used to design and reengineer business processes, such as sales and distribution, instead of simply automating them. And as is clear from the title, this concept is explored almost exclusively within the context of SAP R/3.

The book is broken down into four sections: "Business Engineering," "Process Engineering," "Architecture," and "Framework & Tools." These segments follow a sliding scale that goes from MBA esoterica to practical application to behind-the-scenes implementation. The first section is dedicated to such things as mapping out global goals and identifying the organization processes that need to be reengineered. Next, the authors get more fundamental, looking at ways in which SAP R/3 can enable a retooling of existing practice, illustrating this thought via case studies. Lastly, the book examines the details of an R/3 system and the tools in the R/3 arsenal. A terrific discipline-spanning volume, SAP R/3 Business Blueprint's one shortcoming is that it never addresses a world in which SAP R/3 might not be the ultimate answer to an organization's efficiency problems. But perhaps it wasn't meant to. --Sarah L. Roberts-Witt
