Catalog of industry intelligence 5 out of 5 stars.

You need not be a SAP R/3 consultant to benefit from this interesting book. In fact, I am not an R/3 expert and have little direct experience with the product. My motivation for reading this book is to better understand ERP in general as it applies to various industry segments, and SAP R/3 and PeopleSoft in particular because of a consulting assignment.

Before reading this book I was under the mistaken impression that SAP R/3 was inflexible and required any company implementing it to completely redesign their business processes to accommodate the software. In many respects this is true. However, SAP has a tagline that "All Industries Are Not Created Equal", which means that a generic solution enforced by an application is not a real solution at all. Using this book I discovered two things: (1) SAP R/3 is a lot more flexible than I heard and can be highly customized using industry-specific solution maps to a number of industries, and (2) the market challenges of the 20 industries covered in this book.

What I like is the consistent way each industry if presented, using a fixed format that discusses each industry's market trends, requirements and solution maps. As a consultant who works across a wide landscape of industries I was able to quickly absorb some of the characteristics of each industry and their key challenges, as well as see how an ERP solution fit within them. Of course, learning about how SAP as a product supports these industries is also useful, and I suspect essential to consultants and constancies focused on this particular product.

The book is a quick read, informative and definitely a worthwhile investment to anyone who is involved in ERP in general and SAP R/3 in particular.

Editorial Review:

(Pearson Education. SAP Press) Text for SAP partners, consultants, customers, and others working with SAP. Discusses industry specific solutions for aerospace and defense, automotive, chemicals, insurance, media, mill products, oil and gas, retail, engineering and construction, and high tech, among other industries. DLC: SAP AG.

Too General Is Right! 2 out of 5 stars.
20 of 20 people found this review helpful.

If you're looking for specific directions, keep looking -- this isn't it. It provides a decent description of all areas in the HR module but doesn't go much further. If you're new to the SAP R/3 HR arena, this will give you a good idea of the capabilities/functionalities of this module. If you're a veteran, you probably won't get a whole lot from it.

Copy of SAP's help. 2 out of 5 stars.

This book is nothing more than a copy (literally) of SAP's help with a few add-ons. If you have access to SAP online help, you would be wasting your money on this book.

This is not the one to have ! 1 out of 5 stars.

This is a terrible book. You can not make any sense out of this junk.

Save your money to take an SAP class 1 out of 5 stars.

I'm part of a team implementing 4 sub-modules of the HR Module - Personnel Admin, Org Management, Benefits and Payroll. This book was useless in helping to explain (from a functional or a technical standpoint) how to implement or use those four pieces. It was useless in helping to understand how Payroll interfaced with FICO.

This is not a book for novices. I'd be surprised if it was a book for experts, but maybe in a couple of years it will be a handy reference. Until then, I'll be using it to press flowers.

If you need information attend the SAP courses.

Editorial Review:

Presents a comprehensive reference balancing HR business decisions with technical implementation strategies to increase efficiency and profitability across your company.

Editorial Review:

Aspect-Oriented Programming is a promising new technology in software engineering which can significantly improve the customisability and evolvability of large software systems. This book covers the role and impact of AOP on database systems. It provides in-depth description of the various AOP key approaches, leading to a detailled discussion on the use of these techniques to separate crosscutting concerns at both the database management system and the database level. New requirements imposed on database systems by the advant of AOP and approaches to building aspect stores and aspect composition in a persistent environment are presented. All the examples build on practical experiences in building database systems using AOP. The book will be of particular interest to researchers and graduate students in database systems and aspect-oriented development.

Save your money. It's all in the manual. 1 out of 5 stars.
19 of 20 people found this review helpful.

Since I am a Filemaker beginner, I wanted a book to get me up to speed quickly. Filemaker comes with two manuals, a "Getting Started" guide and a "User's Guide". They are pretty good, but I was in a hurry and hoped that the Visual Quickstart Guide would live up to its title. Regretfully, the Visual Quickstart Guide merely rehashes the same information that is available in the User Guide. In most cases, I found the User Guide's explanations to be clearer than those in this book. The author seems to have forgotten a basic principle - a book on a software product must add value to the product's included documentation. I found Visual Quickstart guide to be worthless in that regard. Eventually, I gave up on it and simply used Filemaker's manuals.

the software does come with a manual - reads a lot like this 1 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

i have to agree with the reviewer who said all of the info in this books is in the manual.

the filemaker pro manual is an easy read and comes with the software. if you have it, read it and keep your $20 in your pocket.

if you are looking for detailed information not covered in the manual, you will not find it here. the only place i have found any substantial filemaker pro information so far is scriptology, filemaker pro demystified by matt petrowsky and john osborne - an EXCELLENT filemaker pro book, something this visual quick start guide is not.

Editorial Review:

Provides an easy, visual approach to teaching FileMaker Pro, using pictures to guide you through the software and show you what to do.

Okay, but not for Hypercard Veterans 3 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

This book was basically about how to do simple things like buttons and painting. Though near the end the book does delve into good things like fiel manipulation. I'm ordering Volume II because that looks more promising. Mainly a referance book!

The mother of all computer books 5 out of 5 stars.

Nothing compares to having fun with Hypercard and it was Danny Goodmans book that opened this world to me. It begins slowly and still takes you up to the top at the end. I cannot use pascal or C but I still felt like a programmer at the end, spending many hours every day making Hypercard scripts. All this thanks to Mr Goodman.

Editorial Review:

This book is the second of a two volume set. This was done to accommodate our printing process. This handbook covers up to version 2.2 and includes: Applescript support, user interface elements, additions to the HyperTalk scripting language, and the creation of personal application. Don't buy it for the software! 3 out of 5 stars.
11 of 12 people found this review helpful.

I purchased the book about 6 months ago and have spent a lot of that time (on and off) trying to locate the author and/or his company (which seems to have gone out of business by the way).

Supplied with the book is Activesheets...a product that I was VERY excited about using - except that I couldn't get the product to work in our 4.6 environment. Maybe we haven't configured OIW or LIS correctly, maybe activesheets doesn't work in 4.6...I'm not sure.

The book is not ONLY about how to use the ActiveSheets to do reporting, but that IS a large part of it. So if you don't have OIW/LIS up and running in SAP...don't bother..

There is some good info in the book regarding business objects, what kind of reports might be good to be able to deliver to end users, some info on SIS, - but it is NOT, as the cover indicates, "The complete and only book you need to create robust reports and ebusiness applications with SAP R/3" (unless you can get ActiveSheets to work!). Would I buy it again knowing I can't get the ActiveSheets up and running...no.

Editorial Review:

Presents how to build and deliver state-of-the-art R/3 reports and business intelligence. CD-ROM includes a full version of Active Sheets, datalead.com's powerful decision support product SAP R/3 reporting. Softcover. DLC: SAP R/3.

Not enough detail 3 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

I found this easy to follow and feel it will be a good reference book. However, I need something with more depth. I purchased the book to create SAPscript forms out of ABAP reports which was easy to do. There is not enough information on how to further customize them based on particular criteria.

This is really awful ! 1 out of 5 stars.
2 of 5 people found this review helpful.

We are running version 4.5, which I believe is a newer version than that presented in the book. Few of the screen shots shown in the book match what is on our system. Some screens do not even remotely resemble what is shown in the book. It's extremely difficult for someone who knows next to nothing about SAPscript to learn from a book that takes you step by step, if there is no way that you can follow those steps on your system.

I'm fairly certain that if our system matched what is shown in the book, I would not be dissatisfied with the book. But that isn't the case. The problem is probably more a result of SAP constantly changing their interfaces that causes more difficulty than it is worth, but does provide them with revenues from training and retraining their customers.

I'd like to see an updated edition, but chances are it would address a newer version of SAP than we are running. SAP has their customers between a rock and a hard place. If you could borrow a copy of the book and step through it while on your system, you might save yourself the cost of the book, which would be money spent in addition to the SAP class that you would have to attend. If the book addresses your release of SAP you'll probably want a copy of your own.

Editorial Review:

Here is the very first guide to SAPscript--the architecture that runs the ABAP/4 program. SAPscript is a crucial element in all external correspondence generated by SAP. The author, an experienced ABAP programmer and SAPscript trainer, provides step-by-step guidance so readers can develop custom layout sets in support of client objectives. Progressive tutorials (basic to advanced) and real-world examples help SAP R/3 implementers achieve mastery of this essential area.
