Editorial Review:

If you're considering the vastly improved 2007 version of SharePoint, this concise, practical and friendly guide will teach you how to get the most from the latest version of Microsoft's information-sharing and collaboration platform. Essential SharePoint 2007 demonstrates how your business can use SharePoint to control documents, structure workflow, and share information over the Web using standard tools business users already know -- Microsoft Office and Internet Explorer. Written in a conversational tone by internationally recognized SharePoint consultant and trainer Jeff Webb, this book helps SharePoint administrators, site owners, and power users quickly gain the skills necessary to perform a wide variety of tasks for intranet and extranet web sites, and explains what's new in SharePoint 2007 for experienced SharePoint 2003 administrators. Essential SharePoint 2007 teaches you how to: Use SharePoint 2007 with Outlook, Word and Excel, and as a document management tool, replacing, for example, shared network drives with libraries Build and customize sites, lists, libraries and web parts for intranets and extranets Use SharePoint 2007 for team communication through blogs, wikis, surveys, and RSS and email alerts Build a SharePoint workflow application Create and program web parts in order to deliver custom services and data to a site Deploy and administer SharePoint 2007 Each chapter ends with a summary of best practices advocated by the author, and the first few chapters of the book are ideal as training materials for end users. Later chapters give developers and administrators tools not only to keep company sites running smoothly, but also to customize and extend them. The book alsocontains several appendices with a glossary of terms and hard-to-find information. Essential SharePoint 2007 is a one-stop task-oriented guide for learning what's necessary to make this tool a vital part of team productivity.

Editorial Review:

Quickly learn the most useful features of Microsoft Office 2007 with our easy to read four-in-one guide. This fast-paced book gives you the basics of Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Access so you can start using the new versions of these major Office applications right away. Unlike every previous version, Office 2007 offers a completely redesigned user interface for each program. Microsoft has replaced the familiar menus with a new tabbed toolbar (or "ribbon"), and added other features such as "live preview" that lets you see exactly what each option will look like in the document before you choose it. This is good news for longtime users who never knew about some amazing Office features because they were hidden among cluttered and outdated menus. Adapting to the new format is going to be a shock -- especially if you're a longtime user. That's where Office 2007: The Missing Manual comes in. Rather than present a lot of arcane detail, this quick & friendly primer teaches you how to work with the most-used Office features, with four separate sections covering the four programs. The book offers a walkthrough of Microsoft's redesigned Office user interface before taking you through the basics of creating text documents, spreadsheets, presentations, and databases with:
  • Clear explanations
  • Step-by-step instructions
  • Lots of illustrations
  • Plenty of friendly advice
It's a great way to master all 4 programs without having to stock up on a shelf-load of different books. This book has everything you need to get you up to speed fast. Office 2007: The Missing Manual is truly the book that should have been in the box.

Great book on MOSS development 5 out of 5 stars.
6 of 13 people found this review helpful.

Patrick does a great job giving you a firehose approach to MOSS 2007 development. I love the chapter on customizing search using the API... fantastic!

Pretty good material... 4 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

The author presents a pretty good sampling of how-to material (it would be difficult to get full coverage of MOSS without a multi-volume issue) but falls a bit short of what I might expect from an "Inside..." title. I would have liked to see more detail on some of the deeper architectural workings of MOSS. The author no doubt knows product extension with .NET well and provides an abundance of attention - especially to search customization development. To the author and publishers' credit, the book is targetted to a developer audience. All in all a solid effort.

Office: Premium Edition will be the talk of the office! 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

Office: Premium Edition was purchased for a required graduate computer class. I'm pretty savvy with all the office products (so I thought) and know quite a few "tricks." When I started going through this book it was quite refreshing to have a "how to" book that is REALLY user friendly! This book caters from the Novice to the Experienced. Now I know why it is considered premium! Purchase of this book is really an investment as well as a time-saver.Microsoft Office 2003: Introductory Concepts and Techniques

ideal book for learning office 5 out of 5 stars.

I have this book and one other by shelly cashman on office also. Same book but a different edition ( has different exercises to work on). I liked this book. Very concise, with step by step instructions to show you how to complete a given project to complete. It was very helpful for my class and it taught me things I didn't even know you could do in excel and access. All pages are glossy with lots of screen shots. Very heavy book to lug around all day, but well worth the information.

Editorial Review:

This exciting Premium Edition includes sufficient material for a first course on Office 2003 applications. Train students with our Premium Edition SAM Training Companion CD and help students reinforce key skills with case studies and tools on the Online Companion.

Pro BizTalk 2006 for the Novice and Expert 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 3 people found this review helpful.

Every so often a book comes along which transcends the technology that it is intended to explain. If you are a BizTalk novice, this seminal work is for you. With a self-deprecating style, the authors guide you through the wide and deep integration waters. They tell you just enough so that you can be proficient and yet feel comfortable that you have chosen the correct course. What you might not know is that the authors are building a framework for you to develop the best solutions going forward. For the expert, the authors have redefined what it means to orchestrate the integration space and to use a product to its maximum utility and purpose. I support both small and enterprise BizTalk customers every day. I can't recommend this book enough!

Editorial Review:

Pro BizTalk 2006 is a high-end resource that is based on real feedback from BizTalk developers. Authors George Dunphy and Ahmed Metwally are well known within the BizTalk community, and here they cover topics not discussed in other books, like performance tuning, scalability, and administration. This book also features examples of specific, real-world implementations.

Great Tool 5 out of 5 stars.
13 of 13 people found this review helpful.

I don't use Excel all the time. But when I do I don't have time to troubleshoot problems.

This hands-on, user friendly book has helped me conquer Excel. The text is readable and well organized. The visuals are clean and fully support the instructions.

I found that you can start from the beginning and teach yourself EXCEL with simple step by step instructions or you can flip straight to your topic of interest and further build your skills. This is a great tool for all levels of expertise.

Great for my users 5 out of 5 stars.
13 of 14 people found this review helpful.

I manage a medium-sized network and support a large number of fairly savvy users. That is, most users know how to do their specific tasks very well and are willing to learn new things. But they are not willing to sit down with a book full of dense text. This is where the "Quick Steps" books come in handy. I keep a number of these books on hand and when a user requests assistance, I give them one of the books with the appropriate page bookmarked. Steps are outlined in full color with lots of pictures and pointers and tips. Additional information is set off in side boxes so users can learn more if they choose. What I have found is that once a user completes a task successfully, they get fairly excited about the experience and browse the book to learn more. The books really stimulate users to experiment with things they would not normally bother to learn. And that is where this book excels. It is a "browser." Users don't feel like they need to start at the beginning and read through to the end. I get lots of grumbles when I ask for the book back so I can pass it on to others.

This book is also great for new users. I tell them to spend a few hours working through the steps, which are easy to follow and can be done at a fairly fast pace. Most users think the full color layout is fun to work through. The down-side is that like any book, space is limited, especially with the fully-illustrated format, so you're obviously not going to find everything in these books, but I do feel they contain a good balance of material and are appropriate for corporate libraries.

Marty (the concept author for the Quick Steps series) and I are fellow writers and that is how I learned about these books. I must say that they have helped my users enormously and relieved my support task. Hey, it's the 21st century. Anyone working in an office should know how to work with operating systems and common applications. Most people can do that if they have easily accessible references and refresher material like these books. Thanks to Marty for developing the "Quick Steps" concept and to McGraw-Hill for publishing this series.

Editorial Review:

Brace youself, because here comes QuickSteps: The fast, easy, accessible information on Excel 2003 in a full-color cookbook-style format. Provides answers to all of your How-do-I questions in a concise and meaningful way. Lengthwise page layout allows for easy page viewing. Useful tips and cautions are displayed in the margins so that they don't break the flow of the quick steps themselves.

This exam counts as a core credit toward the new MCAD (Microsoft Certified Application Developer) certification as well as a core credit toward the MCSD .NET certification. KALANI WORKS, MS DOESN'T!!! 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 6 people found this review helpful.

DON'T BOTHER WITH MICROCRAP BOOKS!! I studied using the Microsoft Self-Paced Training Books and didn't come close to passing.

Bought this book based on reviews and studied from cover to cover. I PASSED!! This covers all subject matter and little intricacies of test material and test taking. There were small issues with the questions in the book.

Suggestion: Take tests at Microsoft site to determine areas you need to work on, concentrate on studying those areas, go retake the tests, brush up on other areas you are good at to increase knowledge. When you feel good enough, go take the test!!

I don't think the PrepLogic CD is worth anything. They have code errors in their content, applications are difficult to work with, and questions are trying to be too tricky ( not concentrating on content ).

Going to buy the other Kalani books to pass the other certs.
