This "Bible" is missing a few verses! 4 out of 5 stars.
29 of 31 people found this review helpful.

The cover of the book states "100% -COMPREHENSIVE- AUTHORITATIVE- WHAT YOU NEED- ONE HUNDRED PERCENT". Now call me naïve, but to me that statement means this book has everything I could possibly want to know about FrontPage 2002! Unfortunately, that's not the case.

I first attempted to find information in the book about subwebs. I hear them referenced quite a bit and wanted to know what they are, how they're used and how to create one. The book makes some vague references to subwebs, but no detailed descriptions about them anywhere.

Next I wanted to find out how I can assign passwords to certain web pages to restrict the permissions for browsing pages. The only password information in the book pertains to administration of the web in FrontPage itself and nothing about assigning passwords to users.

Lastly I went to the book to learn about SharePoint Team Services. The book has much information about this topic, but under the heading "Administering a SharePoint Site" it reads "Complete coverage of these topics is beyond the scope of this book..." Doesn't 100% include complete coverage?

I suppose with a topic as vast as Web design, and especially with a program as big as FrontPage, it would be rather difficult to include every single bit of information one could possibly want or need. But I thought the information for which I was searching would certainly be covered in a ONE HUNDRED PERCENT, COMPREHENSIVE, WHAT YOU NEED- Bible!

Maybe I need to find a "Bible" with a cover that boasts "ONE HUNDRED TWENTY PERCENT"?!!

Editorial Review:

The key to accessing the power of every operating system is its application programming interface (API). Visual Basic can access only part of the Windows API without special help. To write the most powerful possible programs, VB programmers need to work with all of the API. The big problem for VB programmers in trying to do so is that all of the available documentation on the Windows API is written for C++ programmers. In other words, the directions for using the API is written in a language that VB programmers don't understand.

Dan Appleman's Win32 API Puzzle Book and Tutorials for Visual BasicProgrammers shows VB programmers how to turbocharge Visual Basic by teaching them how to understand Microsoft's documentation to control the entire Windows API. Appleman's unique puzzle format includes 32 sample programs that almostbut don't quitework. Each puzzle has a solution with an in-depth explanation of the problem, why it occurs, and why the solution works. By avoiding the usual dry "lecture" style so common in technical books, this guide will keep you awakein fact, some of the puzzles may keep you awake nights searching for a solution. And when you've finished, you'll have an understanding of the technology that will qualify you as a true API guru.

With a writing style that combines technical competence, humor, and a bit of "attitude," Appleman proves once again in this long-awaited complement to his previous bestseller, Visual Basic Programmer's Guide to the Win32 API, that learning advanced technology can (and should) be fun.

Looks good but it is trouble 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

All in all, this is a usable book if you take the time to discover essential details that are missing. As you get into more sophisticated topics you find that about 10% of the procedures described in the book do not work. Essential steps, thate could have been spelled out in a line of text, are missing and I have to experiment for close to an hour to discover what they are. The book is too verbose and could be condensed to half its size, with no loss of content. The humor is weak and adds nothing to the book; I never got a chuckle (and I like to laugh). There are no examples of creative use of Photoshop, even though this is why we want to learn the darn thing. I have used computers everyday since 1969, so I don't think that my troubles are caused by my ignorance. Unfortunately, I can't recommend a better book, since I stuck with this one and I managed to learn what I need. It is not a bad book to get you started, but you should look at other books before buying this one.

Great for my users 5 out of 5 stars.
11 of 12 people found this review helpful.

I manage a medium-sized network and support a large number of fairly savvy users. That is, most users know how to do their specific tasks very well and are willing to learn new things. But they are not willing to sit down with a book full of dense text. This is where the "Quick Steps" books come in handy. I keep a number of these books on hand and when a user requests assistance, I give them one of the books with the appropriate page bookmarked. Steps are outlined in full color with lots of pictures and pointers and tips. Additional information is set off in side boxes so users can learn more if they choose. What I have found is that once a user completes a task successfully, they get fairly excited about the experience and browse the book to learn more. The books really stimulate users to experiment with things they would not normally bother to learn. And that is where this book excels. It is a "browser." Users don't feel like they need to start at the beginning and read through to the end. I get lots of grumbles when I ask for the book back so I can pass it on to others.

This book is also great for new users. I tell them to spend a few hours working through the steps, which are easy to follow and can be done at a fairly fast pace. Most users think the full color layout is fun to work through. The down-side is that like any book, space is limited, especially with the fully-illustrated format, so you're obviously not going to find everything in these books, but I do feel they contain a good balance of material and are appropriate for corporate libraries.

Marty and I are fellow writers and that is how I learned about these books. I must say that it has helped my users enormously and relieved my support task. Hey, it's the 21st century. Anyone working in an office should know how to work with operating systems and common applications. Most people can do that if they have easily accessible references and refresher material like these books. Thanks to Marty for developing the "Quick Steps" concept and to McGraw-Hill for publishing this series.

Editorial Review:

Brace youself, because here comes QuickSteps: The fast, easy, accessible information on PowerPoint 2003 in a full-color cookbook-style format. Provides answers to all of your How-do-I questions in a concise and meaningful way. Lengthwise page layout allows for easy page viewing. Useful tips and cautions are displayed in the margins so that they don't break the flow of the quick steps themselves.
