Editorial Review:

If you think you're well versed in ASP.NET, think again. This exceptional guide gives you a master class in site building with ASP.NET 3.5 and other cutting-edge Microsoft technologies. You learn how to develop rock-solid web portal applications that can withstand millions of hits every day while surviving scalability and security pressures -- not just for mass-consumer homepages, but also for dashboards that deliver powerful content aggregation for enterprises. Written by Omar AL Zabir, co-founder and CTO of Pageflakes, Building a Web 2.0 Portal with ASP.NET 3.5 demonstrates how to develop portals similar to My Yahoo!, iGoogle, and Pageflakes using ASP.NET 3.5, ASP.NET AJAX, Windows Workflow Foundation, LINQ and .NET 3.5. Through the course of the book, AL Zabir builds an open source Ajax-enabled portal prototype (available online at "www.dropthings.com"), and walks you though the design and architectural challenges, advanced Ajax concepts, performance optimization techniques, and server-side scalability problems involved. You learn how to: Implement a highly decoupled architecture following the popular n-tier, widget-based application model Provide drag-and-drop functionality, and use ASP.NET 3.5 to build the server-side part of the web layer Use LINQ to build the data access layer, and Windows Workflow Foundation to build the business layer as a collection of workflows Build client-side widgets using JavaScript for faster performance and better caching Get maximum performance out of the ASP.NET AJAX Framework for faster, more dynamic, and scalable sites Build a custom web service call handler to overcome shortcomings in ASP.NET AJAX 1.0 for asynchronous, transactional, cache-friendlyweb services Overcome JavaScript performance problems, and help the user interface load faster and be more responsive Solve scalability and security problems as your site grows from hundreds to millions of users Deploy and run a high-volume production site while solving software, hardware, hosting, and Internet infrastructure problems Building a Web 2.0 Portal with ASP.NET 3.5 also presents real-world ASP.NET challenges that the author has solved in building educational and enterprise portals, plus thirteen production disasters common to web applications serving millions of users. If you're ready to build state-of-the art, high-volume web applications, this book has exactly what you need.

Great book on MOSS development 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 12 people found this review helpful.

Patrick does a great job giving you a firehose approach to MOSS 2007 development. I love the chapter on customizing search using the API... fantastic!

Pretty good material... 4 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

The author presents a pretty good sampling of how-to material (it would be difficult to get full coverage of MOSS without a multi-volume issue) but falls a bit short of what I might expect from an "Inside..." title. I would have liked to see more detail on some of the deeper architectural workings of MOSS. The author no doubt knows product extension with .NET well and provides an abundance of attention - especially to search customization development. To the author and publishers' credit, the book is targetted to a developer audience. All in all a solid effort.

Finally, a half decent MS Press title... 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

Not a fan of MS Press titles generally - but this one is very good...provides excellent information on how to design and deploy VS 2005 solutions, as well as nice technical 'under the hood' information. As usual the timing is odd given that Windows 2008 isnt that far off (thinking of Schurmans' LCS 2005 book)...so one wonders about the longevity of VS 2005. But still - an excellent book, and the accompanying DVD is very useful. This along with Ben Armstrongs book are all you need. 5 stars all the way....

This "Bible" is missing a few verses! 4 out of 5 stars.
29 of 31 people found this review helpful.

The cover of the book states "100% -COMPREHENSIVE- AUTHORITATIVE- WHAT YOU NEED- ONE HUNDRED PERCENT". Now call me naïve, but to me that statement means this book has everything I could possibly want to know about FrontPage 2002! Unfortunately, that's not the case.

I first attempted to find information in the book about subwebs. I hear them referenced quite a bit and wanted to know what they are, how they're used and how to create one. The book makes some vague references to subwebs, but no detailed descriptions about them anywhere.

Next I wanted to find out how I can assign passwords to certain web pages to restrict the permissions for browsing pages. The only password information in the book pertains to administration of the web in FrontPage itself and nothing about assigning passwords to users.

Lastly I went to the book to learn about SharePoint Team Services. The book has much information about this topic, but under the heading "Administering a SharePoint Site" it reads "Complete coverage of these topics is beyond the scope of this book..." Doesn't 100% include complete coverage?

I suppose with a topic as vast as Web design, and especially with a program as big as FrontPage, it would be rather difficult to include every single bit of information one could possibly want or need. But I thought the information for which I was searching would certainly be covered in a ONE HUNDRED PERCENT, COMPREHENSIVE, WHAT YOU NEED- Bible!

Maybe I need to find a "Bible" with a cover that boasts "ONE HUNDRED TWENTY PERCENT"?!!

Good, but Dangerously Incomplete 2 out of 5 stars.
6 of 7 people found this review helpful.

I have never written a review before, but I felt compelled to warn others new to building websites who might buy this book. While the critical third chapter outlining how to structure a website appears an excellent presentation, there is NO mention of subwebs (these are the typical http://www.website.com/subweb/subweb2/etc that you see throughout the web.

What is presented is well written, but even though 2003 appears on the title, the author has not appeared to even open the help pages in the application to read what topics are currently present.

Thus there is no discussion of Share Point nor of the related web packages nor of security/passwords. Additionally, there is no discussion of the relationship between the remote computer and the version stored and published on the server. At this point I'm sure many other omissions may be present, but having "designed" a website and later deciding to break out part of it into a subweb, I found to my consternation that unless I was on a server running Share Point, I would have to completely rebuild my subweb from scratch. Of course I could copy the files, but the entire navigation/link structure and styling requires the use of a web package, and that is unavailable on a remote computer not running Server 2003.

Thus, Buyer Beware! This is an excellent, but fatally flawed and outdated instruction text. It may be of value for those who want to get the flavor of how to build a single web page, but beyond that, I suggest the prospective website builder would be well served to look to texts with greater depth.
