Out of date, and highly Microsoft-centric, but still useful 3 out of 5 stars.
12 of 13 people found this review helpful.

Unfortunately time moves on for this 1998 book. Most of the links the author provides to Microsoft sites (and you need to realize that this book is a Microsoft Press publication, not an independent) are no longer operational, nor do they provide any easy way to find the info she refers to. This is really unfortunate because these links are the illustrations of what she is talking about in the text. Another problem: While the text makes passing reference to "other" technologies, such as UNIX (! ), the references seem perfunctory and tend to be a little bit condescending, so the book comes off as much as a Microsoft sales document as a text. If you read the book with these two limitations in mind, there is still a lot of really good information in it, the presentation is clear and logical, and there are some excellent rules for web site development that still apply regardless of the platform you are implementing on. However, if you don't keep in mind that this is a somewhat out of date Microsoft publication, you could draw erroneous conclusions.

Editorial Review:

Mary Haggard's insightful book, which grows out of a series of enthusiastically received articles that appear at the SiteBuilder Web site, is aimed at helping Webmasters and computer professionals gain a winning edge on building and managing a commercial Web site. The book sorts out the jumble of marketing messages and technology claims that overwhelm would-be site builders. .

Plenty of insight into WebSphere. Abosutely to be read! 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

Excellent book for all Linux and UNIX users. This book offers plenty of insight into the administration and programming of WebSphere that helped me to understand many interesting points such as J2EE classloading under WebSphere runtime, HTTP session persistence (persisted to database), the web container and JAAS-securing servlets, beans to be turned into web services, etc.
This book is highly technical, and it offers also insight into the administration way of thing. I recommend it for real enterprise application development.
Absolutely to be read.

Editorial Review:

Develop and deploy powerful Web-based applications on multiple platforms - including UNIX, NT, and AIX. Packed with essential information as well as advanced techniques for developers and system integrators, this book will help you maximize every aspect of WebSphere's functionality, and fully leverage the power of this key e-infrastructure software. Covering core Web technologies including EJB, J2EE, and servlets and including original source code for hundreds of working programs, "IBM WebSphere Application Server Programming" belongs in the hands of every serious WebSphere developer and system integrator.

Top Notch 5 out of 5 stars.

This book does a great job of explaining in-depth some advanced issues of AD. I only recommend this book for experienced admins since it only glosses over introductory topics. Look at this more as a book for advanced architectural issues like DNS and AD Scripting (VB, etc.) though I would say scripting newbies could benefit.

Also, this book is not MCSE 2000 prep material. I would not recommend this book until you already have a firm grasp of most AD concept and you want to go further.

Finally, the authors credentials speak for themselves. I highly recommend this book.

This book is good two years ago, but not now 3 out of 5 stars.

I bought this book, and I found that Apache did not have the Version decribed in this book available for me to download.

This book was good for me only with the basic command just to make a web site up and running, but was not good for me in configuring CGI, access control, and other complicated usages.

Apache has updated its version frequently. So, you will have difficulties using instructions from this book with Apache of today versions.

Get newer Apache books if you can.

I also wish the author writes a new and updated version though.

Editorial Review:

After covering the "must-haves" for every Web site, this book moves on and shows how to put Apache's extensive security capabilities to work. Later chapters explore advanced topics such as electronic commerce, working with databases, extending the server's capabilities, and optimizing Apache. Covers a plethora of very important technologies, including Web server organization, creating effective CGI scripts, database management, password/DBM authentication, encryption, generating virtual HTML documents, using RSA certificates and secure sockets, parsing and processing form data, and more. With this book by their side and the free copy of Apache, readers will have everything they need to run a full-featured Web site.

Remarkable 5 out of 5 stars.

Perfect for someone like myself transitioning from VB to C++. Clear examples of how to create ATL .dlls with ADO or OLEDB. Excellent example of creating simple hierachical object models and custom collections. A good chapter on integrating MTS and proper exception handling.

If you already know the Microsoft DNA framework and want to dive into C++ implementation quick, this book is made to order.

I was churning out ADO .dlls within a week. I can't emphasize the simplicity and clarity of this work. I read 6 other MTS/Database/C++/COM books and hands down this one is the most focused. The Nathan Wallace MTS book (MFC and ATL) is a good companion to this one if you desire reinforcement, some wordier examples, and both ATL and MFC variations.

Only caveat: One of the strengths of this book is its weakness. This book does not cover C++ programming language basics so if you can't read procedural code or understand objects in a general sense this could be a little steep. On the other hand, if you don't want your examples cluttered up with a lot of business logic and procedural riff-raff this book is tremendous.

Editorial Review:

Walks you step-by-step through building and deploying robust multi-tier systems, presenting in-depth code examples proven in the classroom and in production environments. Softcover. CD-ROM included. DLC: Electronic data processing--Distributed processing.

The book will give a brief summary of AD compared to NT 4.0 and NDS. Once the groundwork is established for AD, there will be discussions about how to implement the different components and objects within AD. After the AD is established, there will be a discussion about how AD will interact with the other network services, such as DNS, DHCP, and WINS, as well as how to properly plan for the AD infrastructure, including Group Policy Objects, Delegate Control, administrative concepts, and installation considerations. There will be tips on how to avoid the most common traps of designing and implementing AD infrastructures. The final chapter will give real world AD design examples that have been implemented by some of the largest and most well known companies in the industry.

Where are the Desktop Publishing Instructions? 2 out of 5 stars.
40 of 40 people found this review helpful.

This must be the book I bought and returned because, although its title suggested otherwise, it dealt exclusively with the internet. I like "Dummies" books and wanted one on PageMaker desktop publishing, not on webpages. I understand from reading another customer's comments that there is not one on straight desktop publishing. I wish the authors had been more straightforward about what their book contained...it would have saved me a lot of time and trips to the bookstore. Guess I will have to look elsewhere for my Pagemaker instructions.

Great Web Page Development Source but NO DESKTOP PUB!! 5 out of 5 stars.

Excellent and easy to understand and read (like all the Dummies books (LOL)). So, hey IDG, "WHEN ARE YOU GOING TO WRITE THE PAGEMAKER 6.5 FOR WINDOWS FOR DUMMIES (NON-INTERNET VERSION)? Although I am glad I bought the internet version, I bought it crossing my fingers that it would contain Desktop Publishing (the main purpose of PageMaker 6.5). My supplier said there is not a "regular" version available for 6.5 yet!!!

Editorial Review:

Covering recent features that increase desktop publishing effectiveness, this guide includes information on layout techniques. Users will find out how to work with text and graphic files to minimize extra work and create documents.

Thoughtful, meticulous coverage 5 out of 5 stars.

Web Connection is a difficult environment to work in particularly if you are new to working with a) a local server and b) a framework for interfacing the VFP language with HTML.

It took me almost a year to complete my first Web Connection project because I had to get most of my answers from the Web Connection forum from people like Randy Person.

Now there are real examples to follow and clear explanations of how each feature works.

Web Connection is a powerful framework for developing VFP applications for the Web. This book will make the learning curve so much better for users of the Web Connection framework.

Congratulations to Randy, Harold and Whil for their thoughtful, meticulous documentation to explain how to set up and use this wonderful product.

Mike Smith

Editorial Review:

A tutorial for novices and a reference for experienced users, featuring step-by-step guidelines for using Web Connection in a day-to-day manner as a developer, this book offers several development alternatives based on the user's style. Demonstrated are the building of two different applications, one easy and one more complex, and nearly two dozen trouble-shooting steps in case of problems. Also explained is the infrastructure of the Internet and, specifically, web applications. Once developers are comfortable building and deploying an application they are then shown how to take advantage of more complex framework features such as file-based versus COM configuration, extending the framework, data entry using object-oriented techniques, and asynchronous applications.
