Editorial Review:

LiveMotion for Windows & Macintosh is an easy-to-read, liberally illustrated guide to learning and using Adobe's tool for creating animation for the Web. As with all Visual QuickStart guides from Peachpit Press, this book is geared toward the user who's new to the software that the book covers, and is designed from the ground up to get you up to speed as quickly as possible.

Every feature of LiveMotion is covered (some better than others), from an introduction to the interface and all of its palettes to animation basics, creating and using objects, using layers, using text, creating rollovers, using behaviors that are linked to objects, and exporting your work for inclusion on a Web site.

With the use of a simple two-column format, the tools, palettes, and features are explained in a balanced presentation that is half text and half illustration. Because animation is LiveMotion's forte, it gets more coverage than any other feature. Animation basics, using the timeline, working with keyframes, and adding sound are introduced in chapter 13, "Animation," while chapter 14, "More Animation," takes on advanced concepts, like animating layers, reshaping objects, animating text, using motion paths, and using rollovers. It would've been nice to see a larger section on using behaviors (chapter 15, "Behaviors," is only about 13 pages long), but that's a minor shortcoming in an otherwise valuable book. --Mike Caputo

Some useful information, but mostly a long ad for Adobe. 1 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

Beware those Adobe-endorsed books. While there are some useful examples herein, most of this is just one long diatribe on the virtues of Adobe and their pivotal place in developing web content. If you're looking to this book to discover how to publish for the web, there are precious few really useful pointers. While the Adobe Classroom in a Book series is instructive, their other titles are of very limitted usefulness (and often very expensive). This book is no exception. Lacks any real discussion of the intricacies of web design. Say nay. Docked a notch for being so expensive.

Editorial Review:

Use Adobe PageMill 2 to easily create engaging Web pages; let Web users see your page designs as you intended using Adobe Acrobat; publish files created in Adobe Persuasion, Adobe Pagemaker, and Adobe FrameMaker on the Web; unleash and understand the power of Adobe Photoshop 4 for Web graphics; discover what Adobe Illustrator can do for Web graphics; and place video on your Web pages using Premiere and After Effects.

Response to 9/11 review 5 out of 5 stars.
6 of 6 people found this review helpful.

I sympathize with the reader who posted the review on 9/11. The FrontPage MCSD Exam is difficult, costly, and requires all of us who take it to set aside hours, even weeks of unpaid time to study and prepare. On top of all that, the exam format and testing environment are both very difficult.

But... none of that really validates the readers conclusion that he failed the test because of my book. Any long, technical book will have a few minor errors like the one noted by the reader, and in this case, I post corrections at the book's Web site as soon as I'm notified of them.

People who buy this book and embark on the preparation process for the 70-055 exam should understand what they're in for. My book cannot compensate you for prep time, training classes, or do anything about the high cost of the exam. The book simply organizes and presents the information required to pass the test. I think the book is a good value - it includes a free introductory-level FrontPage training CD. But some readers will need to take additional FrontPage training to prepare them to pass the FrontPage MCP exam.

The sample tests in the book and the online exam cover the material in the test, but cannot duplicate the exact interactive format of the exam itself. Finally, as other readers have noted, my Web site provides many additional helpful resources for passing the exam including a forum for exchanging experiences.

Readers who are already experts at FrontPage seem to find the book very helpful in preparing for the sometimes strange and obscure skills required for the exam. For other FrontPage developers preparing for the exam, a book like Teach Yourself FrontPage 98 in a Week is a better place to start.

There are many resources for preparing for the FrontPage MCP exam, and used in that context I think my book is valuable.

Note: I included stars in this posting only because an entry in that field is required to post a review.

Excellent Primer - all software is out of date 3 out of 5 stars.

HTML CD was read over two weeks. It has an excellent detailed description of how to create web pages (The book's objectives). The software on the CD is ONLY GOOD ON WINDOWS 3.1! And the HTML descriptions are all for Netscape 2.x - IE Explorer is never mentioned. Good for basics only.

Editorial Review:

All the software and information users need to turn a Windows PC into a Web publishing system. This book/CD set gives users a comprehensive introduction to HTML and presents design guidelines, information about building interactive forms, and directions for creating a personal home page. The CD contains easy-to-use Web authoring tools that simplify the creation of HTML documents.

The ONLY HTML book you will EVER need 5 out of 5 stars.
29 of 29 people found this review helpful.

Don't buy one of those gigantic 30lb books w/ a CD in the back... they're overwhelming and expensive... and totally over-blow the whole simplicity of web development.

Tim Evans nails it on the head. I bought quite a bit of intro books when I wanted to put up my first web page... they are all boat anchors and door stops now.

I have been a professional web designer for over 4 years and I owe it to this easy intro by Tim Evans. I read the small book in one day and I had my first web page up in 5 minutes.

Anytime someone asks me how to get into web design & programming, this is the only book I recommend.

It's cheap, it's short and it gets right to the point. Thanks to Mr. Evans for being a cybergeek AND being able to speak to neophytes at the same time!

This is a great book for learning HTML 5 out of 5 stars.

This book is very easy to follow. it has almost every aspect of the HTML language. I recommend it strongly

Incomplete for a reference, and hard to locate tags! 3 out of 5 stars.
7 of 7 people found this review helpful.

I'm reviewing this book from the point of view of an advance html programmer. I do agree the book is easy to understand, but a bit unorganized and incomplete for a 10 minute guide or reference. The book lacks many attributes within a tag. This book is "ok" for beginner, but even if you're a beginner you don't want to buy this book. It's old, incomplete and chances are you'll have to look for another html books after this one. It's not a good book to keep as a reference either. It's good to look at this in a library to understand what html is about, then go buy a more complete book to keep. And don't buy a big fat one either. Eventually you'll want a small, thin pocket book with all the tags and attributes and what each one does just to refresh your memory 'cause there is nothing much in html.
