extremely poor excuse for an expository book 2 out of 5 stars.
4 of 6 people found this review helpful.

I do all my serious mathematical work with Mathematica. However since some of my collegues use Excel for simple data presentation and analysis, I've recently started using Excel to be able to converse with my collegues.

Since most of the elmentary things that one would do with Excel are fairly simple, the built-in help capability is quite adaquate as a learning resource. However, as with any product, there are various useful tricks that go beyond the scope of the built-in help feature, which a good book could address. Because the reviews on Walkenbach's book were so uniformly good, I thought I would give it a try to get some deeper insights into Excel. Unfortunately I was quite disappointed.

Indeed the book contains a wealth of useful examples, and for that reason I gave it two stars. The major problem with the book however, is that it does a very poor (and often non-existent) job of explaining why the examples work.

A case in point is the example on page 402 which shows how to graph a function without populating values in a worksheet. There is a receipe in the text for accomplishing the task. However the receipe is so sketchy that I don't believe anyone would be able to produce a graph by just reading the text.

Fortunately there is a working example on the CD that comes with the book. And more fortunately, the example can be easily modified to produce graphs of other functions. This is all very good! However Walkenbach does not explain why the example works. Moreover, he makes no attempt to explain the obscure functions (OFFSET, SUBSTITUTE, EVALUATE) which the example is based on. Thus all the reader is left with is a template for accomplishing a task. If he keeps the template around, he should be OK. But if he's asked to develop the template on his own, from basic principles, he will not be able to do so.

The graphing example is not an isolated case in the book. Time and time again I found myself fustrated with poor explainations throughout the book -- few of which provide an understanding of why things work.

Understanding why things work is extremely important because without an understanding of how something works, it is impossible to devise solutions to situations that one has not encountered before. Cookbooks are useful for producing tasty meals, but one cannot become a real chef without understanding the principles of cooking. Similarly, this book is at best a reasonable cookbook, but a terrible expository work.

Editorial Review:

This one-of-a-kind reference delivers all the tips and techniques you need to maximize one of the most powerful spreadsheet tools: formulas. With clear explanations of operators, nesting, and functions plus hundreds of practical, real-world examples, spreadsheet expert John Walkenbach shares proven solutions for typical (and not-to-typical) Excel challenges. From working with dates to performing table lookups to creating array formulas, this in-depth guide will help you supercharge your spreadsheets -- and make the most of Excel.

Easy Reading 5 out of 5 stars.

This is the excel book that I have been looking for. Easy to read and understand. The displays are done well. Sometimes you need more that a book for dummies.

Editorial Review:

Microsoft Office Excel 2007 is the biggest revision this industry standard software has undergone in years. It has a brand new interface, tons of new tools and even a suite of services called Excel Services to allow you to share your valuable data on the web. For the first time in years there is a lot to learn to make the most of this powerful new update. To take advantage of all of the new features in this powerful program (and to do so quickly), users need this Visual QuickStart Guide. In these pages, veteran author and trusted Excel teacher Maria Langer provides step-by-step instructions for the full gamut of Excel tasks: from worksheet basics like editing, using functions, formatting cells, and adding graphics objects, to more advanced topics like creating charts, working with databases, and Web publishing. As with all Visual QuickStart Guide books, clear, concise instructions and lots of visual aids make learning easy and painless.

Integrated Accounting for Windows 4 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

This book assumes you have taken a basic course in accounting, or have basic accounting background. (I find that you can get by without the accounting background, but it will take longer to complete the course). I find the text very well laid out, almost self explanatory. This is the text that most Junior Colleges are using at this time. The company is very quick at resolving any questions/problems you may encounter. I reccomend this book for anyone wanting to learn more about computerized accounting.

Editorial Review:

Quite possibly the easiest-to-understand product on the market, Klooster and Allen's Integrated Accounting For Windows teaches all the aspects of computerized accounting and the operating procedures for all Windows-based programs at the same time. The software was specifically designed to be very similar to the commercial software packages used in business, which will help users hit the ground running when they get that first real job. Plus, because the software is introduced gradually throughout the book, readers won't become overwhelmed with the program. The result? Users will be able to concentrate more on the accounting principles being taught.

Too many pages, not too much content... 3 out of 5 stars.
24 of 25 people found this review helpful.

If you are an absolute beginner 80% of this book is for you. If you bought it to explore the capabilities and more complex tools of Excel, you are at a loss. I've been using Excel for 10 years. Mostly for corporate needs in an office environment and as a calculation tool for some of my MBA classes. Bought this one to get more insight, but did not find it useful. Most of the pages are spent to describe the simplest of tasks, such as formatting, listing of built-in formulas etc...
Won't recommend to intermediate and up users...

Good day!

Read the back cover 4 out of 5 stars.

I believe this book is a great book. However, people who buys it are not aware that the book is for intermediate level. It is assumed by the author that they should have a basic knowledge of how to use excel. Please read the title, and the back cover page to let you know for who it is written. This book was not written for beginners, do not give a bad review about it if you do not know how to use excel at all. Buy a book that is for you. a beginner level book not a beginner to intermediate level.

Great introduction, easy reference 5 out of 5 stars.
16 of 18 people found this review helpful.

For someone who needs quick answers to very specific problems, illustrated in great detail, and indexed very thoroughly, this will be hard to beat. Everything I tried to do was successful on first try. My homebuying clients will appreciate the attractive sheets of financial info. I'm also using it for quick entry of information which I download to my Palmtop.

Easy to follow 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 4 people found this review helpful.

This was a really good book to read and to understand Excel. It was well indexed and did not get too over the top using geek only talk. I am finding the info a little dated though today and I am looking forward to buying something like Excel 2003 or newer because some of this does not apply to the newer versions of Excel. Based on how well this book was done I will look to the same authors for this too.

A Book on What's New In Excel 2007 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 12 people found this review helpful.

I think there are two reasons for buying a book on Excel 2007.

First, of coure, is if you are new to Excel. I suppose that there are some people out there who don't know Excel. If you're one of these, this is not the book for you.

Second, and I expect far more common comes in two versions. (1) you know and use Excel and are wondering if it is worth while to spend the money to pay for an upgrade, and if it is worth while to spend the time and effort to learn the new features. (2) you have the new Excel and are looking at the 'RIBBON' and wondering what to do with it.

In either of these cases this is the book for you. It's a small book on what's new in Excel 2007, it skipps all the beginning stuff like 'what is a spreadsheet.' It starts with the Ribbon. What else, that's the biggest change. And from there it goes on to the other major changes into what Microsoft did with Excel in this revision.

This little book could save you an awful lot of time and effort.

Editorial Review:

In this addendum to Learn Excel from Mr. Excel, the amazing new features offered in Excel 2007 are introduced. Revealing the features that make this new version the best new release of Excel since 1997, this guide provides the necessary information to teach users to quickly unleash the powerful new features in Excel 2007, create incredible-looking charts, customize color themes to match their corporate logo, utilize data-visualization tools, and learn Pivot Table improvements.

Don't waste your money 1 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

Auditors: Unless you're a total beginner at Excel, don't waste your money or time on this book. Pick a better comprehensive book about Excel, such as Wiley's MS Office Excel 2003 or ANYTHING else - they will cover all those concepts and dozens more, without insulting your intelligence. The idea that this book is for auditors is laughable. More like for 5th graders. I'm almost returned it, but didn't want to waste the time packing it up.

Editorial Review:

Providing the tools and techniques necessary for finding errors and fraud in audits, this guide for auditors looking to better validate their Microsoft Excel spreadsheets provides techniques for performing a risk assessment and gathering spreadsheet and other data from company systems. Performing audit data analysis using data and analytical management functions and pinpointing the common errors in spreadsheets with focused Excel tests is discussed, as are the best practices for error and fraud prevention when developing spreadsheets. This reference is fully updated to reflect Excel 12.
