100% useless 1 out of 5 stars.
53 of 56 people found this review helpful.

Believing the hype about Hedtke and his books I bought two (This one and Peachtree Complete Business toolkits). Both turned out to be useless. This one is a simple rehash of the Peachtree manuals but even less clear and with no new material to add what so ever. You can learn more from just experimenting with Peachtree and buying a good accounting manual (if you are not an accountant as I am). The later of which there are, I am glad to say, plenty of.

If you want to buy this book thinking it will help you get to grips with peachtree then don't. As I said the manuals and online help that come with the software are much better. Maybe as a cure against insomnia...

A waste of dough. 2 out of 5 stars.

I have already read the reviews on this page before I bought the book but I don't have that band wagon mentality so I found it myself. Yes, I have read through the book but finally stopped 1/3 of the way...I got lost. It's not really a step by step instructional book so I have to figure out what the author means and I have grown tired of it. I have a strong accounting background and I'm doing well with manual bookkeeping all I need is to computerized my books. This book is not helping. Right now I'm planning to buy those books for dummies or go to the Peachtree website and check their self study guides...I don't know...but FORGET ABOUT THIS ONE!

Editorial Review:

Peachtree's user base remains steady and the product continues to be popular among small businss owners looking for accounting software to help them run and track their businesses--from accounting fundamentals to payroll to accounts receivable and inventory, job costing and generating reports.

A solid book that gets the job done! 5 out of 5 stars.
15 of 16 people found this review helpful.

Let me put this in clear, concise and 'hands-on' language. Before reading this book, I knew little about VBA. Right after reading it (and actually working through 80% of its examples), I was able to build a custom mortgage analysis application using MS Excel as the user interface and MS Access as the data source. I was able to set up and manipulate dropdowns (comboboxes) within spreadsheet cells to present parameter choices, and to programmatically create and manipulate graphs and pivot tables to display results in more meaningful formats. I also made extensive use of arrays and functions to cope with the many iterative calculations required. To add to all this, I was able to use DAO to query and update the Access database. Since then, I have been working on VBA for Access etc., only to find out that the foundation laid by John Walkenbach carries over excellently to all MS Office applications.

Editorial Review:

Through his years of spreadsheet writing, John Walkenbach found that only about 5% of spreadsheet users really understand what Excel is capable of--his goal with this book is to develop them into would-be power users and VBA programmers. The bonus CD-ROM features a blockbuster assortment of over 15 MB of Excel and Windows 95 Shareware, featuring the Power Utility Pak, a comprehensive collection of utilities and 22 new worksheet functions. It also includes all the code and examples from the book and an awesome collection of Excel games.

Great Intro 3 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

This is a great intro do MS-DOS, but it doesn't really deal at all with the configuration and architecture of the operating system. Like the title says, it is a short, concise guide to batch files and how to use them. If you want to learn to configure your operating environment using AUTOEXEC.BAT, but were afraid of messing something up, this book is a handy little guide. Especially good for beginners.

The Best Written Book I own for Visual Basic/Studio/App 5 out of 5 stars.
8 of 8 people found this review helpful.

I own nearly a dozen books on Visual Studio(VS), Visual Basic(VB), and Visual Basic for Applications(VBA). For the past 3 years, I have architected personal / workplace solutions, and have been mostly self-taught through books and online learning opportunities.

After finding "Using Excel Visual Basic For Applications," by Jeff Webb, it has become hands-down my primary resource. "The Excel Bible," by John Walkenbach used to be my book of choice, but where Walkenbach concentrates more on explaining Excel, Jeff Webb has developed his effort to elaborate on VBA, and is focused on object-oriented programming.

For instance, Chapter 5 of 21 includes a section on the 'Application Object.' Starting with an explanation of what is an Application Object, a chart spanning three pages, consisting of 'Properties and Methods' applicable to an Object follows. It is analogous to VB's Object Browser, since both provide the Developer a directory listing. Then Jeff Webb steps into each entry and provides explanations of what happens to the object, like VB Help, and a code snippit. For example:

[Application.]ActiveCell

Bracketed items being optional, this example would mean the snippit is merely 'ActiveCell', and can be inserted into the code of a function or subroutine ie.

Sub Subname()
ActiveCell
Exit Sub

This procedure will return the range of where the Excel cursor is, also known as the "Input Focus."

If what you have just read makes sense to you but don't understand, you could benefit from owning "Using Excel Visual Basic for Applications." If there is no comprehension, I suggest reading, 'Microsoft Office Excel 2003 Bible' by John Walkenbach from WILEY Publishing.

PS. I am not affiliated with QUE, Jeff Webb, WILEY, or John Walkenbach, and did not receive any compensation for this commentary about either book, just in case the thought occurred...

Editorial Review:

Written by a former Senior Writer at Microsoft, this book shows the reader how to do everything from simple macro creation to powerful application development. Readers will be able to speed up the development process and avoid "reinventing the wheel" for common processes.

Very good basic COBOL book 4 out of 5 stars.
6 of 6 people found this review helpful.

I first learned COBOL on an HP-3000 about 12-13 years ago. Unfortunately, I didn't use COBOL again until a few months ago, so my COBOL skills were rusty indeed when I found the need to create COBOL programs on the AS/400 I use at work. PROGRAMMING IN COBOL/400 was exactly the refresher I needed.

Although the first few chapters were primarily a review of good programming practice (use of flowcharts, pseudocode and printer spacing charts), the remainder of the book provided a good, reasonably comprehensive discussion of COBOL programming concepts.

The book is organized in a fairly straight-forward manner, starting with a look at the different divisions of a COBOL program. While I have yet to encounter a book that describes the four divisions and their sub-sections in a way that makes it easy for me to remember what is required, and in what order to place them (I tend to copy old programs, remove everything that is not used in the new program, and rewrite the Data and Procedure Divisions), this book's discussion of these constructs is as good as any, and better than many. The author introduces new concepts when discussing the Procedure Division in an effective manner, starting with the basics and gradually building towards more advanced concepts. The index is, for the most part, comprehensive and useable. The appendices at the end of the book cover topics that may be useful to some programmers, without cluttering the main text of the book with material that most AS/400 programmers do not need because they are probably already familiar with it (such as the AS/400 environment, PDM, etc.).

My gripes are mostly trivial, and should not discourage a potential buyer from purchasing this book. First, the overview of programming concepts probably would have been better in an appendix. This is very basic material, and not necessary for most AS/400 programmers to review. Second, since input and output specifications are such a large part of COBOL programming, copies of a printer spacing chart in the appendix would have been nice. The author shows the use of these spacing charts in several examples, but all have sample data filled in on them. Finally, some of the discussion appears a little dated. As I understand, this book is basically a rewrite, geared specifically towards the AS/400, of a "classic" COBOL text. Unless I am mistaken, the original source for this text was the book I used in high school to learn COBOL in the first place, and it is apparent to the reader that much of the content has been adapted to the AS/400 environment.

Nevertheless, this is a very readable text on AS/400 COBOL, and I would recommend it to an AS/400 programmer--or any other programmer, for that matter, as COBOL is a very standardized language--without hesitation.

Editorial Review:

Based on the best-selling, COBOL text by Robert and Nancy Stern.
* Increased coverage of ILE COBOL and subfiles.

from novice to advanced in under 3 hours 4 out of 5 stars.
22 of 22 people found this review helpful.

This is my first experience with this series, and what a positive experience it was! The layout is very easy to follow, the diagrams are accurate and attractive, and the text clear. I barely knew how to use Excel at all when I started, but after under 3 hours with the book, I'm confident that I could do any major project just using the information I learned while reading it. Kudos to whoever designed the order of difficulty and chapter headings, because the progression of ideas naturally follows. The chapters on using complex formulas and creating charts were particularly strong. In fact, even if you don't know how to use your mouse, if you read the book chronologically, you'd learn that too, followed by of course more complex things. I knew Excel was a powerful program. After reading this book, I feel that I can put that knowledge to work in practical ways. If you are a visual learner and have trouble following the "Idiot Guides," this series is a great alternative.

Editorial Review:

Packed with more than 300 full-color pages, Teach Yourself Microsoft Excel 2000 VISUALLY offers a clear and colorful way to read less and learn more on your way to becoming an Excel 2000 master. You'll receive jargon-free instructions on everything from working with formulas and functions on your worksheets, to adding graphics and charts to your worksheets, to using your Excel files on the Internet with clear examples that fill every chapter.
