Nice problem-solving reference... 4 out of 5 stars.
18 of 18 people found this review helpful.

If you spend much time in Excel as part of your daily routine, you probably end up running across things you just don't know how to do. Joseph Rubin's latest book F1 Get The Most Out Of Excel Formulas And Functions might be a really good resource to bail you out when necessary...

Contents: Working With Formulas; Text; Date & Time; Lookup; Logical & Errors; Counting; Summing; List; Miscellaneous Calculation & Math; Income Tax & Financial; List of Functions; Index

There are a large number of "how to" items in this volume, formatted with the pattern of "Problem", "Solution", and "Explanation". Usually each of these are accompanied with a graphic that represents the spreadsheet and/or formula solution. The writing is tight and to the point, so there's not pages and pages of explanations on any single problem. It's a quick "get in, get out" type of tip that should point you in the right direction. I even found a solution to a spreadsheet issue I had (that I wasn't even looking to solve!). I have a spreadsheet that tracks my Amazon reviewer stats, and a couple of the columns show error statements for the blank lines because there are references to cells that aren't yet filled in. With one of these tips, I am now able to avoid that problem. Nice!

If you don't know Excel, then this book isn't going to teach it to you. But if you've conquered the basics and now want to do real work, this is a nice volume to keep on hand to help you around the minor roadblocks you'll be sure to encounter...

Editorial Review:

With more than 300 solutions to the time-consuming problem of combining Microsoft Excel functions into effective, problem-solving formulas, this handbook addresses questions that are regularly posted to Excel newsgroups—topics of the most interest to Excel users. Questions and answers provide a title, problem, solution, explanation, and screenshot, and include many of the complex formulas and their several nested functions. Formulas for wages, shifts, time sheets, income taxes, financial calculations, amortization tables, counting, and handling errors are demonstrated, and the accompanying CD-ROM contains Excel workbook files that incorporate all the formulas presented in the book. Each question and answer includes a hyperlink that allows interested readers to visit the author's website to discuss problems and proposed solutions.

Editorial Review:

On the surface, it doesn't appear as if much in Excel 2003 has changed. There are a handful of new objects and the user interface is largely the same. But beyond a superficial glance, you'll see that there are fundamental shifts implied by the new features: Lists, XML, web services, .NET, and InfoPath build a framework for entirely new ways to exchange data with Excel. In fact, that's much of what Excel 2003 is all about--solving problems that deal with teamwork-- collecting and sharing data, programming across applications, and maintaining security. The latest in our Developer's Notebook series, this guide introduces intermediate to advanced Excel VBA programmers to the newest programming features of Excel 2003,--focusing just on what's new--so you can get up to speed quickly. Light on theory and long on practical application, the book takes you directly to the topics you'll want to master through a series of hands-on projects. With dozens of practical labs, you'll be able to decide for yourself which new aspects of Excel will be useful or not in your own work. And best of all, you won't have to buy an expensive revision of a legacy Excel programming tutorial to learn about the new features--if they're covered there at all. Excel 2003 Programming: A Developer's Notebook shows you how to work with lists and XML data, secure Excel applications, use Visual Studio Tools for Office, consume Web Services, and collect data with Infopath. Each chapter is organized into a collection of labs, each of which addresses a specific programming problem. You can follow along to complete the lab on your own, or jump ahead and use the samples the author has built for you. The new Developer's Notebooks series from O'Reilly covers important new tools for software developers. Emphasizing example over explanation and practice over theory, they focus on learning by doing--you'll get the goods straight from the masters, in an informal and code-intensive style that suits developers. If you've been curious about Excel 2003, but haven't known where to start, this no-fluff, lab-style guide is the solution.

A review by a statistics class (XP edition) 4 out of 5 stars.
30 of 30 people found this review helpful.

I use this book as the main text book for the first half of a class in statistics and research methods for students from a wide variety of social science and humanities backgrounds, with little formal statistics or mathematics background.

I surveyed my students with 5 questions about the book, with responses on a Likert scale (1=strongly disagree, 3=neutral, 5=strongly aggree. 17 students responded, which is a small enough sample size to caution applicability of results. The mean value of each response appears after the questions I asked.

1.The book was, overall, helpful in explaining statistical concepts. (Mean=2.73). Students would have appreciated more explanation and examples.
2.The book helped me to analyze data. (Mean=2.3)
3.The StatPlus AddIn was, overall, helpful in analyzing data. (Mean=3.76)
4.The StatPlus AddIn worked well on my computer. (Mean=3.7)
5.Overall, I would recommend this book to next year's class. (Mean=3.05)

Thus, overall, weighting each question equally, my students gave the book 3.12 stars.

As a professor, I give the book 4 stars. The organization of the book chapters fit well in an overview course, with one chapter assinged per week. The StatPlus AddIn is worth the cost of the book itself, as it expands the statistical capabilities of Excel without students needing to purchase additional software. There are a wide range of problems and example data sets which come with the book, applicable to a wide range of disciplines. A significant number of students had computer difficulties installing and running the StatPlus AddIn, so I would recommend to the company a support web page with FAQs, at the least.

Students with little preparation in mathematics or statiscs who need a good step-by-step guide to data analysis will find this book helpful, especially if they do the excercises at the end of the chapters. (The publishers should make the answers available to everyone, not just us instructors -- for those working on their own who want to check their work). However, students with some preparation in statistics or mathematics may be better served with a more advanced text.

Editorial Review:

Learn how to solve real-life business problems and generate professional reports that include spreadsheets and graphics by harnessing the power of Microsoft Excel for Windows 95. This book teaches readers how to use Excel - the industry standard software for spreadsheets - to do statistical analysis and the number-crunching that is often required in business. This book is ideal for anyone who finds themselves having to make recommendations, forecasts, or decisions based upon sets of real data. Even readers with no previous experience using computer spreadsheets will find this text's step-by-step approach and use of numerous screen shots make it easy to learn to use Excel in analyzing data sets. The authors have included a wide range of real-world examples to show how the skills the book teaches apply to a variety of business situations.

Manual para futuros administradores 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 3 people found this review helpful.

Ragsdale really makes spreadsheet modeling accessible to real-world business situations. It was a great asset to my MBA coursework. As a student, it came with a free student version of @RISK risk analysis software as well.

Good practical text 4 out of 5 stars.

A Good Book for Finance/IT majors 4 out of 5 stars.

This book does what it sets out to do: teach spreadsheet modeling. I'm only on the third chapter, but the author does a good job including step by step instructions on how to create winning models. The author is also very easy to understand. So if you're going to be doing optimization and modeling in your work, I highly recommend this book.

Spreadsheet Modeling and Decision Analysis (with CD-ROM and Microsoft Project 2003 120 day version) 5 out of 5 stars.

This book was received in a timely fashion and Amazon is continuing to make sure their customers are completely satisfied.

It's OK. 3 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

The book is OK. It is thorough in the chapter as how to implement the models in excel. That can be fun if you like to set up and solve problems. The only thing about the text is the problems in the back of each chapter. The problems would be very hard to solve, because the problems are not exactly how the set up is within the chapter.

When I was in class and was given homework problems, it was very difficult in determining the set up. When the class saw they answers the next class they were different than the set up in the chapter. Don't expect the answers to be like the chapter. There is always some other additions to the model or it may be set up a different way. It might be appropriate to ask the professor to go over some problems in class so you can gain a clearer understanding of Operations Modeling.

Perfect for a beginner 5 out of 5 stars.
6 of 7 people found this review helpful.

I have NO previous experience with Excel or any other spreadsheet program. I have no programming experience of any kind. Reading the lessons and following along at my computer was very easy. All the lessons were 'bite-sized' so as to only take about an hour, which is just enough studying for me after a hard days' work. By the time I finished the book I wrote my own budget and expense program using cross references to multiple pages with pie charts. All the basics are covered, you will be using Excel easily after completing this book. This book is not intended to cover VBA programming, that is a whole 'nother matter. I highly recommend this book!

A user-friendly guide 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 2 people found this review helpful.

Trudi Reisner has truly put together a practical guide to using the intimidating--to me at least--Microsoft Excel program. Unlike other guides which insist you learn the history of the program since 1944 (or whenever it was), this aid has you just jump right in, get you started, show you the right way to do things, and show you the short-cuts which are just as useful. I only wish they didn't promise this 24 hour goal to learn Excel. It took me three times as long. But hey, I learned it, and I use it now. Highly recommended.

Editorial Review:

Sams Teach Yourself Microsoft Excel 2000 in 24 Hours presents the best tools, shortcuts and ways to accomplish the most common tasks in Excel while avoiding the little used features. You may work at your own pace through the book in the one-hour lessons on the most widely used features of Excel.
