Editorial Review:

Designed in the highly regarded O'Reilly Cookbook format, "ADO.NET Cookbook" is strikingly different from other books on the subject. It isn't bogged down with pages of didactic theory. The "ADO.NET Cookbook" focuses exclusively on providing developers with easy-to-find coding solutions to real problems.

"ADO.NET Cookbook" is a comprehensive collection of over 150 solutions and best practices for everyday dilemmas. For each problem addressed in the book, there's a solution--a short, focused piece of code that programmers can insert directly into their applications.

And "ADO.NET Cookbook" is more than just a handy compilation of cut-and-paste C# and VB.NET code. "ADO.NET Cookbook" offers clear explanations of how and why the code works, warns of potential pitfalls, and directs you to sources of additional information, so you can learn to adapt the problem-solving techniques to different situations. This is a painless way for developers who prefer to learn by doing to expand their skills and productivity, while solving the pressing problems they face every day.

These time-saving recipes include vital topics like connecting to data, retrieving and managing data, transforming and analyzing data, modifying data, binding data to .NET user interfaces, optimizing .NET data access, enumerating and maintaining database objects, and maintaining database integrity.

The diverse solutions presented here will prove invaluable over and over again, for ADO.NET programmers at all levels, from the relatively inexperienced to the most sophisticated.

Very good VFP6 book if you invest time in it 5 out of 5 stars.
9 of 10 people found this review helpful.

I've read several Visusal FoxPro books, and to me, this was one of the better ones. It's not really designed as a reference book, but rather as a guide to helping the reader learn to use the various functionaliy available in VFP. This is a big topic, and the author addresses a wide range of issues. I would recommend this book to users who already have some (but not necessarily a lot) of VFP experience, and want to advance from a beginner to the next level. The book is over a thousand pages, so if you're looking for a "Learn VFP in 5-minutes", this is not the book for you.

Editorial Review:

The major enhancements in this edition over the previous edition will be coverage of the Microsoft Transaction Server and integration with Microsoft SQL Server--the two most important additions in version 6. Coverage of the enhanced debugger, profiler, and Year 2000 compliance checker will also be important to this audience. The new debugger and Year 2000 checker will automate much of the tedious FoxPro debugging process from the past. This book is aimed at the experienced, professional FoxPro developer--unlike most of the competition. This book will provide a "visual development" foundation for those programmers moving to Visual FoxPro, but will not provide basic introductory FoxPro and database coverage for brand new users. Experienced users will find the "Techniques from the Pros" provide plenty of in-depth reference and examples. An additional section will cover integration with other Visual Studio applications--particularly Microsoft SQL Server.

This is mostly a campaign book 2 out of 5 stars.
9 of 12 people found this review helpful.

If you play campaigns and need help, this is the book for you. Over 2/3's of the book is devoted to walking you through the campaigns. If however, if campaigns are a thing of the past for you and you are trying to refine your skills to play against other people... this book is of little help. There are a couple of pages detailing the newest civs to TC, not much more info is offered than what comes with the aoe documentation. There are a few strategies that are described that are pretty basic and are useful if you've never or hardly played before. There is a section that supposedly has tips from the actual ES testers (3 I think)...pretty weak because everyone's preferences are always debatable. Anyway, they pretty much just give their opinions on what civ, what unit and combinations they like best. (To kill your curiosity, most chose Mayans for the archer/eagle scout combo.) Adding links in the book to aoe websites is a waste of space. You're better off going to Google and typing in 'AOK TC' and getting hundreds of links to sites that people actually use. So... since I don't really play campaigns anymore and I am a person trying to find resources to get better playing against other people, I found this book a waste of money. I only gave it an extra star because it details the campaigns pretty good.

Essential to my success on Exam 512 5 out of 5 stars.
6 of 6 people found this review helpful.

This book made passing Exam 512 fairly easy. Books & classes from IBM do not focus on passing the exams, but this book does. During 10 yrs. of UNIX sys. admin. I'd done almost no database work. I passed Exam 512 after 3 weeks of concentrated effort. Week 1 - 2 classes: DB2 UDB Family Fundamentals (2 days) & DB2 UDB SQL Workshop (2 days). Weeks 2 & 3 - Read "DB2 Fundamentals Certification for Dummies" cover to cover. I answered every end of chap. question, did every lab and took the practice exams on the CD. I'd never sat for a certification test and this book made me very comfortable with the process. I passed Exam 513 three weeks later using a 4 day class, DB2 UDB Admin. Workshop, and "All-In-One DB2 Admininistration Exam Guide" in the same fashion. I highly recommend this book for passing Exam 512. I would not recommend it as a reference for DBAs.

Editorial Review:

IBM Universal Database is experiencing tremendous share growth and certification in DB2 is quickly becoming an important hiring factor with many corporations turning to UDB for their database solutions. This book will guide you quickly through preparation for the DB 2 Fundamentals exam -- and start you on the path to DB2 certification!

Focused specifically on this exam, DB2 Fundamentals Certification For Dummies will help you prepare quickly and efficiently for the Fundamentals exam. This guide brings you extensive self-assessment opportunities -- including questions prepared by IBM insiders with access to the actual exam content. Plus, the book includes coverage of what to expect during the actual testing situation, and tips and hints on how to best prepare for the exam.

It isn't clear, it isn't very helpful, A WASTE OF MONEY 1 out of 5 stars.
13 of 13 people found this review helpful.

Briefly, I was wanting to use VFP and have found difficulties getting a book to help me get me around the "new" database style...

I bought Using Visual Fox Pro (QUE) and found it fairly hard to get around

So I then bought VFP dummies, VFP programming basics (OSBORNE) and THERE IS NO COMPARISON the latter book is clear and holds ones hand and takes the reader through the basic concepts in a clear logical fashion,,,, highly recommended

On the other hand DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY ON VFP for dummies. THIS BOOK doesn't deliver anything of merit.. I Guess I am the dummy for buying it !!!!

Okay place to start if you are just getting into foxpro 2 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

Just to keep it short and simple, if you are even slightly familiar with Foxpro this is not the book for you. Whereas if you are just beginning to learn an xbase langauge, this book will give you a great overview of most topics.

Editorial Review:

Microsoft Visual FoxPro is a relational database management and development tool. This book is a guide to the software and it's sophisticated client/server features. It covers remote views and connections, upsizing tools, new SQL commands and object-oriented programming.

As the most popular database management program on the market, Microsoft Access didn't need much improvement. But with the release of Access 2003, Microsoft managed to further enhance the way people organize, access, and share information. In this new version, Access is more capable than ever, thanks to additional features like automatic error checking, automatic property updating, and the expanded ability to import, export, and work with Extensible Markup Language (XML) data files. The number of features it offers is truly impressive--and potentially daunting. Anyone baffled by the multitude of features and functionality in Microsoft Access can get up to speed quickly with the help of Access 2003 Personal Trainer. Part of our new Personal Trainer Series, this book lets people of any technical level learn exactly what they need to know at their own pace. Great book 5 out of 5 stars.

Even for people that thinks that knows everything about DB2, this book is important because it delves into the main subjects that will appear in the exam, but also is useful to give you an overview about what you know, and what you have the opportunity to enhance your skills using other sources.

Editorial Review:

This book covers the first "Fundamentals" exam (test 700 (previously test 516)) an individual needs to pass in order to become DB2 UDB Version 8.1 certified. Written by a DB2 UDB Certified author who worked directly with the DB2 UDB Version 8.1 Certification Exam development team and reviewed by the IBM Data Management Certification Program Manager, each book is guaranteed to provide the reader with all of the information needed to pass the V8.1 Certification test 700. Exam-like questions and answers are provided at the end of each chapter and information explaining why each answer provided is correct accompanies every answer given. This is a must-have for any DBA taking the first certification exam.

Waste of time, paper, and money 1 out of 5 stars.
9 of 19 people found this review helpful.

There would be some benefit from this book if you could weed out the cutesy comments, but it's just too hard to do. On every page are numerous sentences to waste your time. When programming and studying you need to concentrate. You don't want to see "(and Santa)" when reading about clauses. There is a section called "Doing it in public" and it asks things like "Can you offer a subroutine a good home?" Hey, can you give me a break?

You can't find what you want either. There are 953 pages. And the table of contents is only 2 pages. It would fit even on one page if you removed Benjamin Franklin's epitaph that takes up half of the first page. (No kidding - They really added B.F.'s epitaph to a FoxPro book.) But, a table of contents at any length is no good when the chapter titles are things like "Your server will be with you in a moment" and "OOP is not an accident." You know, "Mom was right", the section titles are even more worthless.

Editorial Review:

An irreverent look at how Visual FoxPro really works, this book gives users the inside scoop on every command, function, property, event, and method of “Tahoe.”

The worst book I have ever purchased..... 1 out of 5 stars.
6 of 9 people found this review helpful.

Let me start by saying that I have bought and read no less than about 50 technical books in my lifetime and I have never written a review good or bad about any of them. With this one I feel like I have to write a review so that no one else makes the same mistake I made.

I have been in the computer field for over 10 years now and I recently decided that I want to learn Access. I am already quite familiar with most of the concepts and want to learn how to write a small Access program. I started with Access Step by Step and it was great. The next step in Microsoft's plan is to read this book.

What a completely terrible book. It is all over the place. It goes on and on about stupid stuff like using a keyboard and mouse and never, not once in all 1,000 pages, show you how to create forms to manipulate data. He says look at my bad examples on the cd but never once talks you through designing your own form. Terrible, terrible book!

Editorial Review:

Two programming products are included in this set: "Running Microsoft Access 2000, " which takes readers through the most used tasks and functions, and "The Mastering Database Fundamentals Using Access 2000, " which teaches the desktop application skills. Users can deploy these products in tandem or individually to learn how to maximize productivity with this popular relational database. Interactive CD-ROM included.
