Essential resource for VFP developers 5 out of 5 stars.
7 of 7 people found this review helpful.

I must say that I think this is an excellent book, and I have to recommend it whole-heartedly. By now, everyone knows this is not just a sequel to KiloFox, right? It contains information on things that you might expect from the title: ActiveX controls, graphing, e-mail, and PDF output. But there is so much more than I expected: COM/COM+, internet/web development, design patterns, XML, ADO, and more. I had been wondering about the implications of using multi-threaded DLLs, and the whole time it was fully explained in this book. Of course, in KiloFox fashion, it provides a lot of code you can use in your own apps. This is easily one of my favorite VFP books, and I put it up there with the Hacker's Guide in terms of usefulness to VFP developers.

Editorial Review:

With its native data engine, rich object-oriented language, and capabilities to produce COM servers and consumer Web services, Visual FoxPro is the single most flexible programming tool available to software developers. But in today's programming environment, nothing stands alone. This guide will show developers how to extend the scope and power of Visual FoxPro as a development tool by integrating it with other software technologies. This much-anticipated sequel to 1001 Things You Wanted to Know About VFP both expands coverage of topics such as data driving and reporting and introduces new topics such as e-mail, IntelliSense, charts and graphs, PDF technology, MSDE, COM/DCOM, XML/ADO, and designing for extensibility.

DB2: The Complete Reference (Review) 1 out of 5 stars.
4 of 6 people found this review helpful.

Although this book covers allot of areas within UDB(DB2) "It is not a Complete Reference". Some areas missing include Bind, CLP, and other utility parameters. It also lacks information on writing scripts for the Script Center and using the Control Center. Also it does not contain all references to SQL statements, some key statements are missing. Other books will be needed for a database administrator or programmer to use UDB. If I would have had a chance to review this book before paying for, I would have saved myself some money.

Great Book 5 out of 5 stars.

Great Book. So much information in it that they couldn't fit it all in the paper book. Chapter 30 - DB2 Command Line Processor Commands must be downloaded from the Osborne web site. I always go to this book before I going to the manuals. Seldom do I have to look further.

Editorial Review:

DB2 is the number two database server next to Oracle and is a highly underpublished area. Written by two members of IBM's DB2 team, this title provides an inside and first look at this version. It should appeal to both administrators and developers as it provides comprehensive coverage.

The Official Introduction to DB2 UDB for z/OS provides a comprehensive overview of Version 8 of the DB2 UDB for z/OS product. The book serves a dual purpose: it gives new and prospective users a solid introduction to key product features and it covers material contained in the DB2 Family Fundamental exam, the first exam in the DB2 certification series. It includes introductory information about designing databases, creating relational objects, managing DB2 on a day-to-day basis, and writing application programs that use DB2 data. It also introduces new users to some of the more complex capabilities of DB2, such as, DB2 in the Web environment, distributed data, and data sharing. Introductory book for the DB2 mainframe audience, parallels Baklarz audience (ISBN 0130463612). Well-written (The Society of Technical Communication recognized the first edition of this book with a Merit award in the Northern California Technical Communication Competition.) Editorial Review:

Windows 98 is the standard operating system for all home computers. Windows Me is the next version of the Windows 9x OS. It is optimized for home use, whereas Windows 2000 is the path recommended to corporate users. Windows Me offers an improved IE 5.5 browser, enhanced digital media capabilities, easier home networking, and a suite for diagnostic and maintenance tools. It has a fast boot feature that allows home users to be up and running in 30 seconds. Current Windows 98 users may not see Windows Me as a necessary upgrade. New home computer systems sold during the 2000 holiday season and beyond will, however, feature Windows Me as the built-in OS. "How to Do Everything" is a series for beginning-to-intermediate computer users. This text takes novices by the hand and leads them through the key features of the program, focusing on practical, real-world applications. By the end of the book, the reader should have a solid intermediate-level of understanding and ability. Because Microsoft focuses on using the Internet and digital media, the book also places heavy emphasis on understanding and using these features. The "How To" and "Did You Know" side bar features of the HTDE series allow the author to digress into interesting background and unusual features of the program.

The bible 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 4 people found this review helpful.

99,9% of Plain OLE is covered. No MFC/OWL/ or anyother compiler-dependent technique. It is the must for the serious programmer.
Warning: not for beginners, make sure you know C++ and the Win32 API well before trying the book.

Was a good book but... 2 out of 5 stars.
3 of 5 people found this review helpful.

much has happened since. This is now looking dated. This was *the* original book on OLE, however, with the subsequent advent of COM, COM+, ActiveX, ATL and .NET means that this book is now something of a period piece. However, the underlying concepts still exist in the majority of PC installations and applications in use today (although expect that to diminish in coming years). OLE (later to become COM and later COM+) had some wonderful, ground-breaking features from an architectural perspective but often the implementation details were very ugly (the Registry, GUIDs, non-unique interfaces, reference counting, etc.). Fortunately, .NET seems to have captured all of the good points, very few of the bad points of OLE, COM, COM+, Java, C++ and VB.

Worse that you could possibly imagine... 1 out of 5 stars.
11 of 11 people found this review helpful.

I'm sorry that there is not a rating of zero or less. Imagine, if you will, any bad quality that an instructional book might have, and feel free to apply it to this book. The best thing I can say about this book is that it's got a sturdy binder. First, the intro. says that the book is for anyone who can write Visual C++ programs on their own. It says nothing of prior database experience. Having none, I took the authors at their word. However, a week into it, and I've no idea what they mean when they say bound and unbound columns. The basic architecture of a database is not described. This is a gross problem with the book. It's 'who this book is for' section should let one know this... Also, the editing is horrific! 'Sentences' which have no meaning, missing operands in the tables, as well as a gross lack of new term definitions recur throughout. How could they have created this book on purpose? There is not even any code in the entire first seven chapters of the book! They go on about the history of ODBC, which might be marginally important and somewhat interesting, but can't we all agree that actual working examples of real programs are at least slightly more important than a history lesson when you're trying to teach how to write programs?? I got the impression that they were padding the book with this sort of thing in order to squeeze out 21 chapters, but I have yet to find anything but filler. In my experience, instructional texts are most useful when there are useful examples sprinkled around...are they trying to save the best for last? Do yourself a favor and don't bother with this disaster.

Editorial Review:

ODBC is a standard Windows programming interface that permits a software developer to write an application that will work with Oracle, dBASE, Paradox, Access, FoxPro, Sybase, SQL Server, and numerous other DBMS formats. Teach Yourself ODBC in 21 Days is a self-contained tutorial that the reader can work through at his own pace.

The best book on writing ODBC applications 5 out of 5 stars.
7 of 7 people found this review helpful.

With the ODBC API you are given a whole lot of notes? But how do you combine those notes to write a symphony? This is the only book on the market which really shows you how. It consists of a detailed ODBC reference and highly useful sample code that shows how to take the API calls and make an application out of them.

The calls are grouped in logical sequences, each call is thoroughly described, and then an example of a program that uses that call (and other calls) is given.

The writing is extremely clear. The presentation is excellent. The book is extremely well organized.

It does not assume any prior knowledge of ODBC though it assumes you know how to program C.

C is the only language used in the book. The use of ODBC in other languages such as Visual Basic is not discussed.

Though this book is old; I cannot recommend it too highly. I've used it before and I'll use it again.

Editorial Review:

This book introduces systems programmers to the tools and techniques needed to write consistent Windows gateway applications that communicate easily with any ODBC data source in a client/server environment. Microsoft, Lotus, Borland, Apple, IBM, Oracle, and Sybase all include support for the ODBC industry standard for multiple database access in their products. A company may easily have DB2 or Sybase running on a mainframe, Netware SQL running on Novell file server, and Paradox running on a workstation-but now IS professionals will have the information and guidance they need to achieve true open connectivity across all of these platforms and products.
